Chapter 5: The Person Behind The Door
The police searched the mansion for nearly an hour.
Every room.
Every hallway.
Every hidden corner.
But they found nothing.
No broken windows.
No forced doors.
No evidence that anyone had entered.
The officer closed his notebook.
“Mr. Carter, are you sure your daughter didn’t have a nightmare?””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“My daughter knows the difference between a nightmare and someone standing in her room.””
The officer glanced toward Lily.
She sat on the couch wrapped in a blanket, holding her favorite stuffed rabbit.
The officer softened.
“Did you see the person clearly?””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
“Anything you remember?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then whispered:
“He was wearing Grandpa’s watch.””
Daniel froze.
The officer looked confused.
“Your grandfather?””
Daniel slowly turned toward Victoria.
Because only one person had his father’s old watch.
Richard.
The next morning, Daniel went straight to Carter Corporation.
He didn’t call ahead.
He didn’t schedule a meeting.
He walked through the executive floor like a storm.
Employees stopped talking when they saw him.
They knew something had changed.
Richard was inside the conference room.
He looked surprised.
“Daniel.””
Daniel closed the door behind him.
“We need to talk.””
Richard smiled.
“About what?””
Daniel placed the document on the table.
The smile disappeared.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel noticed.
That reaction.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You knew about it.””
Richard leaned back.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””
“That sentence is becoming very common in this family.””
Richard stood.
“Your father made mistakes.””
“My father trusted you.””
“And that was his mistake.””
Daniel stared at him.
“How long?””
Richard said nothing.
“How long have you been trying to take everything?””
Richard walked toward the window.
“Do you know what it feels like to spend your whole life standing behind someone else?””
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re my brother.””
“No.””
Richard turned around.
“I was your father’s son too. But he chose you.””
The bitterness in his voice was obvious.
Daniel understood something.
This was never just about money.
It was about resentment.
“I saw the security footage from the hospital,” Daniel said.
Richard’s expression changed.
“What footage?””
Daniel watched him carefully.
“You tell me.””
A pause.
Then Richard smiled.
“You’re accusing me?””
“I’m asking questions.””
“You always did that.””
“What does that mean?””
Richard stepped closer.
“It means you never noticed what was happening around you.””
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
He opened it.
A photo appeared.
It was Lily.
Sleeping in her hospital bed.
Taken from inside her room.
Daniel’s face went pale.
The message below contained only one sentence.
*Stop digging, or next time she won’t get up.*
Richard watched Daniel’s expression.
And that was when Daniel knew.
Someone close to him was involved.
Someone who had access.
Someone who knew every move he made.
That evening, Daniel sat beside Lily’s bed.
She was finally asleep.
He watched her small hand holding the stuffed rabbit.
His daughter had trusted him her entire life.
And he had failed to see the danger around her.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Lily slowly opened her eyes.
“Daddy?””
Daniel smiled gently.
“I’m here.””
She looked at him.
“Are you going to leave me?””
The question broke him.
“Never.””
“But Mommy said rich people always choose money.””
Daniel went still.
“What else did Mommy say?””
Lily hesitated.
Then she reached under her pillow.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in Mommy’s room.””
Daniel took it carefully.
“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””
“Because I was scared.””
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Victoria.
Richard.
And another person.
Someone Daniel recognized immediately.
His own attorney.
The man who had handled every legal document in his family.
Daniel stared at the picture.
May you like
Because the person who was supposed to protect him…
Had been part of the plan all along.
