Chapter 6: The Betrayal No One Expected

Daniel spent the entire night studying the photograph.

Three people.

Victoria.

Richard.

And Thomas Blake.

His family attorney of twelve years.

The same man who helped Daniel create business contracts.

The same man who handled his father’s estate.

The same man who told Daniel after his father’s death:

“Your family is all you have left.””

Daniel felt sick.

Because now he wondered if those words were a warning.

Or a lie.

The next morning, Daniel confronted Thomas.

The attorney’s office was quiet.

Too quiet.

Thomas looked up from his desk.

“Daniel. I wasn’t expecting you.””

“I know.””

Daniel placed the photograph on the desk.

Thomas stopped breathing.

Just for a moment.

But Daniel saw it.

“You want to explain?””

Thomas removed his glasses.

“Where did you get that?””

“That’s not an answer.””

Thomas looked at the picture.

Then sighed.

“I was trying to fix things.””

Daniel laughed.

“By helping them destroy me?””

Thomas stood.

“You don’t understand what your father left behind.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Daniel slammed his hand against the desk.

“My daughter was pushed down a staircase.””

Thomas looked away.

And that reaction told Daniel everything.

“You knew.””

“I knew there was a plan.””

Daniel stared.

“And you did nothing?””

“I thought I could control it.””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“You thought you could control people who were willing to hurt a child?””

Thomas had no answer.

Later that day, Daniel returned home.

Victoria was waiting.

This time, she looked different.

Tired.

Broken.

Not the woman in the red dress from the ballroom.

Just someone who had finally realized everything was collapsing.

“You spoke to Thomas,” she said.

Daniel stopped.

“How did you know?””

Victoria looked down.

“Because he called me.””

Daniel stared.

“So you’re all connected.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, Daniel. Not anymore.””

He didn’t believe her.

“Why should I?””

“Because I made mistakes.””

“You helped them.””

“I know.””

“Your mistakes almost killed our daughter.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

For the first time, tears appeared.

“I was trying to survive.””

Daniel looked at her.

“That’s what everyone says when they hurt someone else.””

Victoria wiped her face.

“Richard planned everything.””

“Including Lily?””

“No.””

She shook her head quickly.

“Lily was never supposed to be hurt.””

“Then what happened?””

Victoria hesitated.

“Richard found out Lily saw the documents.””

Daniel froze.

“What documents?””

“The original trust papers.””

His heart dropped.

“Lily saw them?””

Victoria nodded.

“She was looking for you that night. She heard Richard and Thomas arguing. She saw the papers. She heard them say your name.””

Daniel remembered Lily’s words.

Someone told me not to say anything.

Victoria whispered:

“She wasn’t supposed to be on that staircase.””

Silence.

“Then why was she?””

Victoria looked toward the window.

“Because Richard needed everyone to think she was an accident.””

Daniel felt anger burning inside him.

“But why?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because Lily knows where your father hid the original evidence.””

Daniel stared.

“What evidence?””

Victoria reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small key.

“He hid everything somewhere only Lily could find.””

Daniel looked at the key.

Then at his wife.

“What are you saying?””

Victoria’s voice trembled.

“I’m saying your father trusted your daughter more than he trusted any adult in this family.””

Before Daniel could respond, his phone rang.

A police officer.

Daniel answered.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“We found something near the staircase.””

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“What?””

A pause.

Then the officer said:

“It’s a camera.””

Daniel stopped moving.

“A hidden camera?””

“Yes.””

The officer lowered his voice.

“And Mr. Carter…”

“What?””

“The footage shows Lily did not fall.””

Daniel felt the world disappear.

“Then what happened?””

The officer answered:

“Someone pushed her.””

May you like

And in the background of the recording…

Was a face Daniel never expected to see.
