Chapter 11: The Secret His Father Took To The Grave

Daniel couldn’t speak.

For several seconds, the farmhouse disappeared around him.

All he could hear was one sentence.

*Your father started this plan.*

It didn’t make sense.

His father was the person who protected him.

The person who taught him honesty.

The person who built everything from nothing.

The person whose letter warned him not to trust anyone.

Why would he create the very nightmare Daniel was fighting?

“Mark,” Daniel said slowly.

“Yes?””

“Find everything.””

“I’m already looking.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at the hidden room.

“Find everything about my father.””

That night, Daniel stayed in the farmhouse office alone.

The others had gone to sleep.

Lily was resting upstairs.

Victoria was in another room.

Daniel opened every file.

Every letter.

Every photograph.

Until he found something hidden inside the back of an old book.

A second letter.

This one had never been opened.

His father’s handwriting appeared again.

*Daniel, if you hate me after reading this, I understand.*

Daniel’s hands shook.

He continued.

*I knew Richard would eventually betray this family. But I also knew exposing him too early would destroy everything.*

Daniel frowned.

*Richard was not my only concern.*

The next page made him stop.

*Someone else was controlling him.*

Daniel sat back.

His father knew.

He knew Richard wasn’t the true enemy.

The letter continued.

*I created the trust because Lily is the only person who could reveal the truth without being corrupted by power.*

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

Toward his daughter.

His father had chosen Lily.

Not because she was strong.

Because she was innocent.

Then he reached the final page.

*The person you trust most may be the person who knows how to hurt you the most.*

Daniel stared at the words.

A terrible thought entered his mind.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone who had access to everything.

Then he heard footsteps.

He turned.

Victoria stood at the doorway.

“You found it.””

Daniel closed the letter.

“You knew there was another letter.””

Victoria didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

His expression hardened.

“How much do you know?””

“Not everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Victoria stepped inside.

“I knew your father was investigating someone.””

“Who?””

She looked at him.

“You.””

Daniel froze.

“Me?””

Victoria nodded.

“Your father was afraid someone would use your name.””

Daniel felt confused.

“Why would he investigate me?””

“Because he believed you were in danger.””

The answer shocked him.

Victoria continued.

“Daniel, your father spent his final months trying to protect you.””

“Then why hide everything?””

“Because he didn’t know who he could trust.””

Silence.

Then Daniel noticed something.

Victoria was crying.

Not dramatically.

Not pretending.

Real tears.

“I should have told you sooner,” she whispered.

“Yes.””

“I was scared.””

“Of Richard?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then who?””

Before Victoria could answer, Lily screamed upstairs.

Both of them ran.

Daniel reached her room first.

Lily was sitting up, shaking.

“Daddy!””

Daniel grabbed her.

“What happened?””

She pointed toward the window.

“There was someone outside.””

Daniel looked.

Nothing.

Only darkness.

Then Lily grabbed his hand.

“Daddy…”

“What?””

“The person outside…”

She swallowed.

“He looked like Grandpa.””

Daniel froze.

Because his father had been dead for five years.

May you like

And yet, on the ground outside the window…

Was a fresh footprint.
