Chapter 2: The Girl Who Knew Too Much
The hospital hallway smelled like disinfectant and fear.
Daniel sat outside Lily’s room, staring at the closed door.
Hours had passed.
Doctors told him she had a broken arm and several bruises, but thankfully no life-threatening injuries.
“Physically, she will recover,” the doctor said.
But then he lowered his voice.
“Emotionally, we need to be careful. She seems afraid.””
That word stayed with Daniel.
Afraid.
His daughter was never afraid.
Lily was the child who danced in the kitchen while making pancakes. The child who asked endless questions. The child who hugged strangers when she thought they looked lonely.
But now she was afraid inside her own home.
When Daniel finally entered the room, Lily was awake.
Her tiny arm was wrapped in a cast.
“Daddy,” she whispered.
Daniel sat beside her immediately.
“I’m here.””
Lily looked toward the door.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Is Mommy coming?””
Daniel noticed the fear in her eyes.
“Why are you scared of her?””
Lily looked down.
“I’m not.””
“Lily.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“She told me not to say anything.””
Daniel’s heart tightened.
“Who told you?””
Lily looked at him.
“Mommy.””
The room became silent.
Daniel leaned forward.
“What did she tell you?””
Lily held onto her blanket.
“She said if I told you what I saw, everyone would lose everything.””
Daniel felt anger rising, but he forced himself to stay calm.
“What did you see?””
Lily looked toward the window.
“Mommy was talking to Uncle Richard.””
Daniel froze.
Richard Carter.
His older brother.
A board member.
A man who had supported Daniel since the company started.
“What were they talking about?””
“I don’t know everything,” Lily whispered.
“But Uncle Richard said, ‘Once Daniel is gone, everything belongs to us.’”
Daniel felt like the air had disappeared.
His wife.
His brother.
Together.
He gently held Lily’s hand.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?””
“Because Mommy said you would be angry.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Lily, I could never be angry at you.””
She looked at him carefully.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Did Mommy push me because she doesn’t love me anymore?””
That question hurt more than anything else.
Daniel had no answer.
Because he didn’t want to poison his daughter’s heart with the truth before he understood it himself.
Instead, he kissed her forehead.
“This was never your fault.””
But outside the hospital room, someone was listening.
Victoria stood in the hallway.
She had arrived ten minutes earlier.
And she heard every word.
That night, Daniel returned home after Lily fell asleep.
The mansion felt different.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
The same family portraits.
But now every corner felt like a lie.
Victoria was waiting in the living room.
She removed her earrings slowly.
“You’re angry.””
Daniel stared at her.
“My daughter said you pushed her.””
Victoria laughed softly.
“Daniel, listen to yourself.””
“I’m listening.””
“You’re accusing your wife based on a scared child’s imagination.””
Daniel walked closer.
“Then explain why she’s afraid of you.””
Victoria’s expression changed for a second.
Only a second.
But Daniel saw it.
“What happened three days ago?”” he asked.
Her eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?””
“The board resolution.””
Silence.
Victoria stopped moving.
Daniel knew immediately.
She knew.
“You thought I would never find out.””
Victoria slowly stood.
“Daniel, you have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
“No. I think I finally do.””
She stepped closer.
“You built that company because of me.””
“My company was built by thousands of employees.””
“You were nothing before I helped you.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Was that the plan? Take my company, then take my daughter?””
Victoria’s face hardened.
“You should be careful with your accusations.””
Then she smiled.
A cold, unfamiliar smile.
Because Daniel suddenly understood something.
The fall at the staircase wasn’t an accident.
It was a warning.
And Victoria had just made one mistake.
She showed him she was afraid.
Afraid of what he might discover next.
The following morning, Daniel opened an old family safe hidden behind a painting.
Inside was something he never expected to find.
A photograph.
May you like
A letter.
And a name that would reveal the darkest secret of the Carter family.
