Chapter 9: My Father Was Part of the Arrangement

I stared at the photograph.

My father.

Nathan.

My grandmother.

All standing together at a restaurant five years before my wedding.

I turned toward Dad.

"Why are you in this picture?""

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

"Where did you get that?""

"Someone emailed it to me.""

He took the phone.

For several seconds, he studied the photograph.

Then he sat down.

"Danielle, I can explain.""

I stepped backward.

"Please don't tell me you knew.""

He rubbed his hands together.

"Five years ago, Margaret arranged a meeting with Nathan. She said he was interested in joining one of our investment divisions.""

"And you met him?""

"Yes.""

"Before I did?""

Dad nodded.

My chest tightened.

"Why?""

"Because your grandmother had already introduced him as a potential business associate. I didn't know she intended to arrange anything personal.""

I shook my head.

"Then why is there a note saying he was a candidate?""

Dad looked at the photograph again.

"I didn't write that.""

"But you were there.""

"Yes.""

I placed Grace's carrier beside the desk and sat down.

"Tell me everything.""

Dad took a long breath.

"At the time, Margaret was pushing for you to become more involved in the family business. She believed you needed a husband who understood finance and could help protect your interests.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Protect my interests?""

"That's what she told me.""

"And Nathan?""

"He was introduced as an ambitious financial consultant. I met him twice. I thought he was competent, but I never encouraged a relationship.""

"Did you know he was interested in me?""

"No.""

I stared at him.

"Did you know Grandma had been arranging men for me?""

Dad lowered his eyes.

"Not until your mother made that recording.""

I stood.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was trying to protect you from a family scandal.""

"By keeping me ignorant?""

He didn't answer.

I looked through the photograph again.

There was something about Nathan's expression that disturbed me.

He wasn't smiling.

He was looking directly at the camera.

As though he knew someone was taking the picture.

Richard interrupted us.

"Sir, we've identified the restaurant.""

Dad looked up.

"Where?""

"The Meridian Club. The meeting was registered under a corporate event account.""

"Can we retrieve the records?""

"Yes. The restaurant retains private event invoices and guest registration information.""

Dad nodded.

"Do it.""

Richard hesitated.

"There's also a second attachment.""

He opened another file.

It was a scanned spreadsheet.

Rows of names appeared beneath a heading:

*POTENTIAL MARRIAGE CONNECTIONS — BROOKS TRUST BENEFICIARY.*

My name appeared at the top.

Beside it were several men's names, their occupations, financial backgrounds, and family connections.

Nathan was listed third.

I felt sick.

"Who created this?""

Richard examined the file properties.

"Margaret.""

I scrolled down.

The first man had been rejected because he had no significant financial connections.

The second had been rejected because his family was already involved in a legal dispute.

Nathan's entry contained a handwritten note.

Excellent access to financial systems. Strong influence potential. Personal relationship can be developed gradually.

I put the phone down.

"They treated my marriage like a business acquisition.""

Dad closed his eyes.

"I didn't know.""

I looked at him.

"Maybe you didn't know everything. But you knew enough to keep secrets.""

He accepted the accusation without defending himself.

Then Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

"Yes?""

A few seconds passed.

"What do you mean?""

His expression changed.

He looked at Dad.

"Sir, Daniel has been located.""

"Where?""

"At a private parking garage near the airport.""

"Is he safe?""

Richard hesitated.

"He's been taken to a hospital.""

I stood immediately.

"What happened?""

"He was found unconscious inside his vehicle.""

Dad grabbed his jacket.

"Get the car.""

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at the hospital.

Daniel was in a private room with a bandage across his forehead.

He was awake.

When he saw me, his eyes filled with tears.

"Danielle.""

I approached the bed.

"What happened?""

He swallowed.

"Someone followed me after I left the office.""

"Who?""

"I don't know. A black SUV. They forced me off the road.""

Dad stepped forward.

"Did they take anything?""

Daniel looked toward the bedside table.

"My briefcase.""

"What was inside?""

"The original trust documents.""

My stomach dropped.

"Did they get them?""

Daniel nodded.

Then he reached beneath his hospital blanket.

"But I kept something else.""

He pulled out a small folded paper.

"I photographed the most important page before I left.""

Dad took it.

The document contained a handwritten amendment to my inheritance trust.

My grandmother's signature appeared at the bottom.

But beneath it was another signature.

Nathan's.

The amendment proposed transferring control of Grace's inheritance to a third-party administrator if Nathan successfully challenged her paternity.

I read the final paragraph.

Then my eyes stopped at the date.

It had been signed six months before Grace was born.

I looked at Daniel.

"You knew about this?""

He nodded weakly.

"I found it three weeks ago.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

He looked away.

"Because I was involved.""

The words landed like stones.

Dad stepped closer.

"Daniel, explain.""

My brother began crying.

"Grandma told me the arrangement was temporary. She promised that after the transfer, everything would go back to normal.""

I stared at him.

"You helped them?""

"I thought I could stop it before it reached you.""

"By helping them?""

He covered his face.

"I'm sorry.""

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to walk out.

Instead, I looked down at the document again.

There was one final clause.

It stated that if Nathan's paternity challenge failed, the trust would still transfer control under a separate provision.

A provision that had been activated only three days earlier.

I pointed to it.

"What is this?""

Dad read the paragraph.

His expression turned grim.

Richard stepped closer.

"Sir, there's something we haven't considered.""

Dad looked up.

"What?""

Richard pointed to the final signature.

"The amendment doesn't require Nathan to win the paternity challenge anymore.""

I stared at him.

"Then what does it require?""

Richard swallowed.

"Your grandmother only needs to prove that Danielle is legally incapable of managing her inheritance.""

I felt my blood run cold.

The false accusations.

The hotel incident.

The claims that I was unstable after childbirth.

The fabricated medical report.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

They weren't simply trying to steal my money.

They were building a case to take away my legal control.

Dad looked toward the hospital door.

Then his phone rang.

Margaret Brooks.

He answered on speaker.

Her voice was calm.

"Alexander, I heard Daniel is awake. That's unfortunate.""

Dad's face hardened.

"Mother, this ends tonight.""

She laughed softly.

"No, Alexander. It ends when I say it ends.""

Then she added:

"And if Danielle wants to know what really happened to her mother, she should ask why you were the last person to speak to her before the accident.""

The call ended.

I turned toward my father.

He looked at me.

May you like

And for the first time, I wondered whether my grandmother had been telling the truth about him all along.

*He had been hiding something far worse than a photograph.*
