Chapter 1: The Slap That Silenced the Lobby

The slap echoed through the marble lobby before I even understood what had happened.

One second, I was standing beside the reception desk, holding my three-week-old daughter. The next, my cheek burned, my knees buckled, and a stranger in a pink designer dress was screaming that I didn't belong there.

"People like you don't belong in a hotel this expensive!""

I stumbled backward, instinctively wrapping both arms around Grace.

"Are you out of your mind?"" I shouted.

"I'm holding a newborn!""

The woman examined her diamond bracelet as if she'd merely brushed dust from her sleeve.

"Then perhaps you should learn to behave like someone who belongs in public.""

My name is Danielle Brooks. I was twenty-six years old, exhausted, and running on approximately two hours of sleep.

Grace had been born three weeks earlier. Her tiny fingers were still so delicate that I sometimes found myself staring at them, amazed that someone so small could completely change my world.

I'd taken her to a pediatric appointment that morning. Afterward, my father had asked me to meet him at the Grand Meridian Hotel in downtown Atlanta.

He owned the company that operated the property, although I rarely discussed our family's business.

I preferred living quietly.

My husband, Nathan, worked in corporate finance. We had a comfortable home, and I wanted Grace to grow up without being surrounded by people who cared more about our surname than our character.

That was why I wore ordinary jeans and a cream sweater.

Apparently, that was enough to make someone decide I deserved to be slapped.

The woman extended her hand toward me.

"Security! Someone get this woman out of here!""

I stared at her.

"First, tell me why you hit me.""

She laughed.

"Because you were standing where my personal assistant was supposed to stand.""

I glanced at the empty space beside her.

"There's nobody standing here.""

"Exactly. Because you took her place.""

A few guests turned toward us. Someone near the elevators raised a phone.

The woman noticed and immediately changed her expression.

"I'm being harassed," she announced loudly.

"This woman approached me aggressively.""

"My name is Danielle," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

"And I want the police called.""

She leaned closer.

"Do you have any idea who I am?""

"No. And frankly, I don't care.""

Her lips tightened.

"I'm Vanessa Whitmore. My husband owns Whitmore Development. We have invested millions in this city.""

She pointed at my sweater.

"People like you should be grateful to even walk through these doors.""

Before I could answer, a middle-aged man hurried toward us.

"Mrs. Whitmore," he said, adjusting his tie.

"What's happening?""

It was Marcus Reed, the hotel's general manager.

Vanessa immediately began crying.

"Marcus, thank goodness. This woman threatened me. She was shouting and making a scene.""

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Grace.

Then back at Vanessa.

"Mrs. Whitmore, are you all right?""

Vanessa dabbed the corner of one eye.

"Not particularly. I want her removed.""

I opened my mouth.

"She slapped me while I was holding my baby.""

Marcus glanced toward the reception desk.

"Emily, did you witness anything?""

A young receptionist stepped forward.

"Yes, sir. Mrs. Whitmore struck her first. I saw everything.""

Vanessa snapped her head around.

"Excuse me?""

Emily swallowed.

"That's what happened.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Emily, return to your station. This is a management matter.""

"But, sir—"

"Now.""

The young woman lowered her eyes.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You're dismissing the only witness?""

Marcus straightened his jacket.

"Ma'am, I suggest you take your child and leave before this situation becomes more unpleasant.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Finally, someone with common sense.""

I felt Grace stir against my chest.

Her tiny face scrunched up, and a soft cry escaped her lips.

That sound did something to me.

I had spent weeks protecting this little girl from everything I could control. Now a stranger had struck me in front of her, and the people responsible for keeping guests safe were helping the attacker.

I reached into my purse.

Marcus frowned.

"What are you doing?""

"Making a phone call.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Calling your boyfriend?""

"No.""

I scrolled through my contacts and pressed the number saved under one word.

Dad.

He answered almost immediately.

"Danielle? Are you here yet?""

I swallowed.

"Dad, someone just slapped me in your hotel.""

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

"What?""

"I'm holding Grace. She hit me, and the manager is trying to throw us out.""

"Are you and the baby safe?""

"Yes. But my cheek hurts.""

"Put the manager on the phone.""

I looked at Marcus.

"My father wants to speak with you.""

He laughed.

"Your father?""

Vanessa chuckled.

"Perhaps her father can explain why she doesn't understand basic hotel etiquette.""

Marcus took the phone reluctantly.

"This is Marcus Reed, general manager. Who am I speaking with?""

I watched his expression change.

His eyebrows lifted.

His lips parted.

Then the color slowly drained from his face.

"Mr. Brooks?""

Vanessa stopped smiling.

Marcus swallowed.

"Sir, I didn't realize—"

May you like

The private elevator chimed.

And my father stepped into the lobby.
