Chapter 12: My Grandmother Tried to Take My Father's Company

By 8:30 the following morning, Margaret Brooks had called an emergency board meeting.

By 9:00, she had presented documents questioning my father's fitness to lead the company.

And by 9:30, she had announced that she was prepared to assume temporary executive control.

I watched everything from the conference room's television screen.

Dad stood at the head of the table, his expression unreadable.

Richard sat beside him.

Three board members were connected through video conference.

Margaret sat opposite my father in an elegant cream suit.

She looked completely composed.

As if she hadn't spent the previous twenty-four hours trying to destroy her granddaughter's life.

"Alexander," she began, "this is painful for all of us.""

Dad didn't respond.

Margaret opened a folder.

"Your recent decisions have created significant financial and reputational risks. You've suspended a senior executive, interfered with a major partnership, and allowed personal family matters to influence corporate operations.""

One board member cleared his throat.

"Margaret, what exactly are you proposing?""

She folded her hands.

"Temporary leadership oversight until Alexander is able to resume his responsibilities.""

Dad finally spoke.

"You're proposing to remove me.""

"I'm proposing to protect the company.""

Richard placed a document on the table.

"Then perhaps we should discuss the twelve million dollars that disappeared from the development accounts.""

Margaret's expression didn't change.

"Those funds were allocated to approved investments.""

"Approved by whom?""

"Management.""

Richard opened another file.

"The authorization records show your personal credentials.""

Margaret smiled faintly.

"Then your investigation is incomplete.""

She turned toward the board members.

"I understand everyone is concerned. But the company's leadership cannot be held hostage by an emotional family dispute.""

I watched the screen.

She was doing exactly what Patricia had described.

Turning the truth into an accusation against anyone who challenged her.

Then Dad placed a photograph on the table.

It was the picture of Margaret and Nathan outside the hotel suite.

"Would you like to explain this?""

Her expression finally shifted.

"That's irrelevant.""

"Is it?""

"Your daughter's marriage is none of the board's concern.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Neither is my granddaughter's paternity. Yet someone used company resources to fabricate medical documents.""

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

"Be careful, Alexander.""

Richard placed another document beside the photograph.

"This is the original hospital access record. It confirms that your account was used to submit a false genetic report.""

Margaret looked at it.

Then she laughed.

"Digital records can be manipulated.""

Richard nodded.

"Which is why we've secured independent verification from the hospital.""

For the first time, Margaret seemed uncertain.

Dad continued.

"There's also evidence that you arranged Danielle's marriage to Nathan for financial purposes.""

She looked directly at him.

"Your daughter is an adult. She made her own choices.""

"After you engineered the introduction.""

Margaret shrugged.

"People meet through family connections every day.""

Dad's voice hardened.

"You planned to use my daughter's marriage to gain control of her inheritance.""

"Don't be dramatic.""

"You falsified documents involving a newborn.""

Margaret's eyes flashed.

"I was protecting this family!""

The room fell silent.

Dad slowly stood.

"From whom?""

"From your incompetence.""

She pointed at him.

"Your wife was going to ruin everything. She was emotional, suspicious, and determined to destroy the company. I had to make decisions.""

Dad's face went white.

"You admitted it.""

Margaret froze.

Richard looked up.

The meeting's recording system was active.

Margaret realized her mistake.

She slowly closed her folder.

"That is not what I meant.""

Dad looked toward the board.

"I move that all authority connected to Margaret Brooks's financial accounts be suspended pending an independent investigation.""

One board member immediately seconded the motion.

Another followed.

Margaret stood.

"You cannot do this to me!""

Dad's voice was quiet.

"Watch me.""

At the hospital, Daniel watched the meeting from his phone.

I sat beside him with Grace sleeping in my arms.

"She's going to fight," he whispered.

"I know.""

He looked at me.

"Danielle, there's something I need to tell you before the police speak to me again.""

I turned.

"What?""

He swallowed.

"Grandma gave me the original trust amendment six months ago. I signed it.""

I stared at him.

"You signed it?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"She said it was only a temporary administrative change. She told me Nathan had agreed to help us recover money that had been lost.""

I felt my anger returning.

"You knew the documents were being changed.""

"I didn't know she planned to use them against you.""

"Daniel, you don't get to keep making decisions about my life and then tell me you didn't understand the consequences.""

He lowered his head.

"I know.""

He reached into his bedside drawer and removed a small memory card.

"But I kept a copy of the original agreement.""

I took it.

"What's on it?""

"Everything Grandma sent me. Emails, financial instructions, and recordings.""

My phone rang.

Detective Mitchell.

"Ms. Brooks, we need you and your father to come to the station. We've obtained additional evidence concerning Margaret.""

"What evidence?""

"The original trust amendment was submitted using a document that appears to have been altered after your marriage.""

"By whom?""

"That's what we're investigating. But we've also located a witness connected to your mother's accident.""

I stood.

"Who?""

The detective paused.

"Richard Whitmore.""

I looked at Grace.

Then at Daniel.

"Vanessa's husband?""

"Yes. He has agreed to cooperate.""

I felt a chill.

"What does he know?""

The detective lowered her voice.

"He claims he was driving the vehicle that followed your mother on the night she died.""

I couldn't speak.

Then she added:

"And according to his statement, your grandmother wasn't the only person who knew your mother would be on that road.""

I looked toward the television.

The board meeting had ended.

Margaret was being escorted out of the building.

But she wasn't looking frightened.

She was smiling.

As the camera followed her toward the elevators, she turned toward someone standing just outside the frame.

A man.

A man I recognized immediately.

Nathan.

My husband.

He leaned toward her and whispered something.

Margaret nodded.

Then Nathan looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

I suddenly understood.

My grandmother might have been losing control of the company.

May you like

But Nathan was still free.

And he had just seen everything we knew.
