Chapter 8: The Recording My Mother Left Behind

I read the message again.

Come alone.

My first instinct was to leave immediately.

My second was to remember that I was holding a newborn and had already been lied to by nearly everyone I trusted.

I showed the message to Dad.

He shook his head.

"Absolutely not.""

"Someone knows what happened to Mom.""

"And someone may be trying to lure you into danger.""

"What if it's the only person who knows the truth?""

Dad looked at me.

"Then we'll find another way to reach them.""

Richard examined the number.

"I'll have our security team trace the message through the appropriate channels.""

I looked at the flash drive.

"Can we open this?""

Dad nodded.

He connected it to a secure computer.

Several folders appeared.

One was labeled:

*OCTOBER 12 — ORIGINAL RECORDINGS.*

Another contained financial spreadsheets.

The third folder had only one word.

*DANIELLE.*

My heart began pounding.

Dad opened it.

Inside was a video file.

My mother's face appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in our old living room, wearing the blue sweater I remembered from my childhood photographs.

For a moment, I forgot to breathe.

"Mom...""

Her voice filled the office.

"If you're watching this, sweetheart, then something has happened that I desperately hoped would never happen.""

I covered my mouth.

She looked tired.

But she was smiling.

"Danielle, you're probably wondering why I made this recording. I wanted to leave you something that would explain things if I couldn't.""

Dad stood behind me.

His hands rested on the back of my chair.

My mother continued.

"Your grandmother has become involved in something dangerous. She's been moving company money through Richard Whitmore's development firm. I found documents proving it.""

Dad whispered, "Dear God.""

The video continued.

"Alexander doesn't know the full extent of it. I've tried to tell him, but Margaret has convinced him that I'm imagining things.""

My eyes filled with tears.

"Mom, why didn't you tell me?""

She looked directly into the camera.

"There's something I need to tell you about Daniel.""

My father stiffened.

The recording continued.

"Your brother isn't a bad boy. But your grandmother has been using his loyalty against him. She's promised him control of the company if he helps her change the inheritance structure.""

Dad shook his head.

"No.""

My mother sighed.

"I know he loves his sister. But he wants to prove himself, and Margaret knows exactly how to use that.""

Then she leaned closer to the camera.

"Danielle, if you ever have a daughter, protect her from people who believe money gives them ownership over other human beings.""

I began crying.

She smiled gently.

"And tell her that her grandmother would have loved to meet her.""

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Dad finally whispered, "I should have listened.""

I reached for his hand.

He held mine tightly.

Then Richard opened another file.

It was an audio recording.

The date was October 11, the night before my mother's accident.

A man's voice came through the speakers.

"Margaret, I can't keep doing this.""

My father leaned closer.

The voice belonged to Daniel.

My brother.

Margaret answered.

"You're making this more difficult than it needs to be.""

"Mom, Danielle will find out eventually.""

"Not if you do what I asked.""

"What about her mother?""

A pause.

Then Margaret said something that made my father grip the desk.

"Your mother has already made her decision. We cannot allow her to destroy everything.""

Daniel sounded frightened.

"What are you going to do?""

Margaret's response was almost inaudible.

But the microphone captured it.

"Leave that to me.""

The recording ended.

Dad stood motionless.

"That doesn't prove she caused the accident," he said quietly.

"No," Richard agreed.

"But it proves there was a serious conspiracy involving company funds and your wife's objections.""

I wiped my face.

"What happened to Daniel after that conversation?""

Richard opened the recording metadata.

"Nothing unusual. He remained in Atlanta.""

Dad stared at the screen.

"Call him.""

Richard dialed.

This time, Daniel answered.

"Richard?""

"Daniel, your father wants to speak with you.""

A pause.

Then Daniel's voice.

"Is Danielle there?""

Dad leaned toward the phone.

"Yes.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Then I need to tell her something.""

I moved closer.

"What?""

His voice trembled.

"Grandma didn't just ask me to change the trust documents.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What else?""

"She told me Nathan had already agreed to marry you because of the inheritance.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Dad.

Daniel continued.

"And there's something worse. Nathan wasn't the first man she approached.""

My throat tightened.

"What are you talking about?""

"She had been arranging your relationships for years. She wanted someone who could get close enough to influence your decisions.""

I couldn't speak.

Then Daniel whispered:

"Danielle, I have the original documents. And they prove Nathan was never supposed to be your husband.""

The call abruptly disconnected.

Dad immediately called back.

No answer.

Richard checked the tracking information.

"His phone has been switched off.""

I looked at the dark screen.

Then a notification appeared from an unfamiliar email address.

There was one attachment.

A photograph.

It showed Nathan standing beside Margaret at a private restaurant.

The date was five years earlier.

Beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.

Before Nathan, there was another candidate.

I zoomed in.

A second man stood behind them.

May you like

Someone I recognized.

My father.
