Chapter 2: The Man Everyone Feared
Alexander Brooks didn't walk like a man who needed to announce his importance.
He didn't have to.
At sixty-one, my father had built a business empire through hotels, commercial properties, and private investments. His name appeared on buildings across several states.
He wore a charcoal suit, carried no briefcase, and had his longtime assistant, Richard Hayes, walking beside him.
The moment he entered the lobby, three employees straightened.
Marcus nearly dropped my phone.
"Mr. Brooks," he stammered.
Dad barely acknowledged him.
His eyes found me.
Then Grace.
Then the red mark spreading across my cheek.
Everything about his expression changed.
"Danielle.""
He crossed the marble floor in seconds.
"Sweetheart, let me see.""
I shifted Grace carefully so he could examine my face.
His fingers hovered near the swelling without touching it.
"Who did this?""
I pointed toward Vanessa.
"She did.""
Dad turned.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward, extending her hand with a practiced smile.
"Mr. Brooks! What a pleasure.
I'm Vanessa Whitmore. My husband, Richard Whitmore, has been trying to arrange a meeting with you for months.""
Dad didn't take her hand.
"Did you strike my daughter?""
Vanessa's smile faltered.
"Well, there was a little misunderstanding.""
"That wasn't my question.""
She glanced at Marcus.
"Your manager can explain. This woman was behaving terribly. I simply defended myself.""
Emily, the receptionist, looked up from behind the counter.
"Sir, that's not true.""
Marcus immediately turned.
"Emily!""
Dad raised one hand.
"Let her speak.""
Emily stepped out from behind the desk.
"Mrs. Whitmore slapped Ms. Brooks.
She was holding the baby. I saw the entire thing.""
Vanessa's cheeks flushed.
"That girl is lying!""
Dad looked at Emily.
"What is your name?""
"Emily Carter, sir.""
"Thank you, Emily. Please don't leave the lobby.""
Then he turned toward Marcus.
"Explain why you were attempting to remove my daughter.""
Marcus adjusted his collar.
"Sir, I was responding to a disturbance. Mrs. Whitmore is a very important guest, and she reported being threatened.""
"Did you ask the receptionist what happened?""
"I did, sir.""
"And she told you?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Then why did you order her to leave?""
"I was trying to avoid further disruption.""
Dad looked around the lobby.
"Interesting. A woman strikes a mother holding a newborn, and your solution is to remove the mother.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Mr. Brooks, surely you understand that hotel management sometimes has to make difficult decisions. My husband has contributed significantly to your business.""
Dad finally looked directly at her.
"Your husband's contributions have nothing to do with my daughter's safety.""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Of course. But Richard and I have been discussing a substantial development partnership with your company.""
Richard Hayes stepped forward.
"Sir, perhaps I should mention something.""
Dad turned.
"What?""
Richard opened the tablet he was carrying.
"The Whitmore partnership review was completed this morning.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"What review?""
Richard ignored her.
"The financial team identified several irregularities in the proposed development payments. We were planning to discuss them with you this afternoon.""
Dad extended his hand.
"Show me.""
Richard handed him the tablet.
I watched my father scroll through the documents.
His jaw tightened.
"How much?""
"Approximately 2.4 million dollars in questionable payments," Richard answered.
Vanessa took a step forward.
"That's ridiculous. Those are legitimate business expenses.""
Dad didn't look up.
"Then you won't mind explaining them.""
"Of course not.""
Richard swiped to another page.
"The payments were authorized using a signature registered to Danielle Brooks.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
Dad slowly turned the tablet toward me.
There was a contract on the screen.
My name appeared at the bottom.
My signature appeared beneath it.
Except I'd never seen the document.
I looked closer.
The signature looked almost exactly like mine.
Almost.
"That's not my signature.""
Vanessa's face turned pale.
Dad's voice became dangerously quiet.
"Richard, where did this document originate?""
"Whitmore Development's accounting department.""
"Who submitted it?""
"An employee using an authorization linked to Nathan Brooks's corporate account.""
My throat tightened.
Nathan.
My husband.
I looked at Vanessa.
She suddenly seemed less interested in defending herself.
Instead, she was watching the tablet.
Dad noticed.
"Do you recognize this document, Mrs. Whitmore?""
"No.""
"You were just telling me the payments were legitimate.""
"They are. I mean, I haven't personally reviewed every document.""
Richard swiped again.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a luxury hotel suite, wearing a black evening dress.
Beside her was a man whose face I recognized immediately.
Nathan.
My husband.
The date beneath the photograph was three weeks earlier.
The night Grace was born.
My fingers went cold.
"Why is my husband with you?""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I looked at the date again.
I remembered that night.
I remembered Nathan telling me he had to step outside the hospital room to take an important business call.
He'd kissed my forehead.
He'd promised he'd be back before Grace's first feeding.
And now I was looking at a photograph of him with Vanessa.
Dad took the tablet from Richard.
"Danielle, I need you to breathe. We'll get answers.""
But I couldn't stop staring.
"Why was Nathan at this hotel?""
Vanessa suddenly reached for the tablet.
"That's private!""
Richard pulled it away.
"Please don't touch company property, Mrs. Whitmore.""
She looked at Dad.
"Mr. Brooks, this is being blown completely out of proportion.""
Dad's eyes narrowed.
"Then explain why your photograph appears in a financial investigation involving my daughter's husband.""
Before she could answer, Richard opened another folder.
"Sir, there's something else.""
He enlarged a scanned document.
It was a hospital authorization form.
Grace's full name appeared across the top.
And beneath it was a request for genetic testing.
My breath caught.
"Why is my daughter's medical information in your company's files?""
Richard looked at the document.
Then at Dad.
"Because someone requested the test using an authorization submitted on the day Grace was born.""
I tightened my arms around my daughter.
"Who signed it?""
Richard hesitated.
May you like
Then he read the name.
"Nathan Brooks.""
