Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in My Daughter's Hospital Records
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except Grace's breathing.
Nathan.
My husband.
The man who had held my hand during labor.
The man who had cried when he first saw our daughter.
The man who had promised that nothing in the world would ever come between our family.
He had ordered a genetic test without telling me.
And somehow, Vanessa Whitmore had access to the paperwork.
I looked at Richard.
"Show me the entire document.""
He hesitated.
"Danielle, perhaps we should move somewhere private.""
"No. I want to see it.""
Dad stepped beside me.
"Richard, give her the tablet.""
The document enlarged.
It contained Grace's birth details, the hospital's identification number, and a section requesting a paternity analysis.
At the bottom was Nathan's signature.
But something else caught my attention.
A handwritten instruction had been added beneath the authorization.
Do not release results to Danielle Brooks until the financial transfer is complete.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
"What financial transfer?""
Nobody answered.
Vanessa shifted her weight.
Her heels clicked against the marble.
"That document has nothing to do with me.""
I turned toward her.
"Then why were you photographed with my husband on the night my daughter was born?""
She lifted her chin.
"Your husband and I have business interests.""
"At midnight? In a hotel suite?""
Her mouth tightened.
"Don't make accusations you can't prove.""
I laughed once, without humor.
"You slapped me in front of my newborn, lied to the manager, and now you're standing here pretending to be offended by my questions?""
Vanessa pointed toward me.
"Watch your tone.""
Dad stepped between us.
"You're finished speaking to my daughter that way.""
For the first time, Vanessa seemed genuinely frightened.
But she wasn't ready to surrender.
She pulled out her phone and began typing.
"My husband will settle this. He has a direct relationship with your board. You cannot simply destroy a partnership because of some family disagreement.""
Dad looked at Richard.
"Call the legal department.""
Richard nodded.
"And the police?""
"Yes. Also, secure every relevant document and preserve all recordings.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Mr. Brooks, I want to apologize. I didn't know Danielle was your daughter.""
Dad slowly turned toward him.
"Would that have changed your decision?""
Marcus blinked.
"Sir?""
"If she had been a woman whose father wasn't wealthy, would you still have allowed someone to strike her and ordered her out?""
Marcus looked down.
"I was trying to protect the hotel's reputation.""
"You were protecting a powerful guest at the expense of an innocent woman.""
Marcus began to speak.
Dad raised his hand.
"You're relieved of your duties pending a full investigation. Leave your access card with security.""
Vanessa looked horrified.
"You can't fire him because of me!""
"I can investigate anyone who fails to protect our guests.""
Two security officers approached.
Dad instructed them to keep Vanessa in the lobby until the police arrived and to ensure that no one touched the evidence.
Vanessa's voice rose.
"Do you understand what you're doing? Richard Whitmore will never forgive this!""
Dad didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
"Let's get you and Grace somewhere comfortable.""
I shook my head.
"Not yet.""
He studied my face.
"Danielle.""
"I need to know why my husband ordered that test.""
Richard glanced at his tablet.
"There's another file attached to the authorization.""
My heart started racing again.
"What file?""
He tapped the screen.
A laboratory report appeared.
Most of the technical language meant nothing to me. But I recognized the words near the bottom.
PATERNITY ANALYSIS.
I couldn't bring myself to read the result.
Dad took a step closer.
"Richard, don't speculate. We need to verify the source and authenticity.""
"Of course, sir.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Have you seen these results?""
She stared at the floor.
"Answer me.""
Her eyes suddenly filled with tears.
"Your husband told me the baby wasn't his.""
The words hit harder than the slap.
I felt my legs weaken.
"What?""
Vanessa wiped her cheek.
"He said there was a possibility you'd been seeing someone else. He said he needed proof before making any decisions.""
I shook my head.
"That's a lie.""
"He said the test would confirm everything.""
"Why would you care?""
Vanessa looked toward Dad.
For a moment, her expression changed.
It wasn't guilt.
It was fear.
Then she whispered something that made the entire lobby go quiet.
"Because if Grace isn't Nathan's daughter, the money belongs to us.""
I stared at her.
"What money?""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Richard stepped closer to Dad.
"Sir, I think you should see the beneficiary information attached to the payment authorization.""
He opened another document.
This one was a proposed trust distribution.
My name appeared first.
Grace's name appeared beneath it.
And a third name appeared under the heading Contingent Beneficiary.
Vanessa Whitmore.
I couldn't understand it.
"Why is she listed as a beneficiary?""
Richard enlarged the document.
"Because the transfer was structured around a clause in the Brooks family trust.""
Dad's face went completely still.
"What clause?""
Richard looked at him.
"The inheritance protection clause established when Danielle was married.""
My father slowly took the tablet.
He read the document in silence.
Then he looked at me.
"Danielle, did Nathan ever ask you to sign anything concerning your inheritance?""
I shook my head.
"No. He told me he wasn't interested in Dad's money.""
Dad closed his eyes briefly.
"Apparently, he was interested enough to investigate it.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped backward.
One of the security officers moved to block the exit.
She raised her voice.
"You're making a mistake! You don't understand what Nathan promised us!""
Dad turned sharply.
"What did Nathan promise you?""
Vanessa's eyes darted toward the elevator.
She said nothing.
Then Richard's phone rang.
He answered.
"Richard Hayes speaking.""
A few seconds passed.
His expression changed.
"You're certain?""
He listened again.
Then he looked directly at my father.
"Sir, the hospital has confirmed that the genetic report was accessed using Nathan's credentials. But there's a problem.""
Dad frowned.
"What problem?""
Richard swallowed.
"The report attached to the financial documents isn't the original result.""
I felt Grace move against my chest.
"What does that mean?""
Richard lowered his voice.
"It means someone altered the report before submitting it.""
Dad's eyes narrowed.
"Who?""
Richard turned the tablet around.
A digital audit record showed the account that had modified the document.
It belonged to someone inside our family's company.
Someone with access to the private trust records.
Someone who knew exactly how to make the transfer appear legitimate.
Then Richard read the name aloud.
"Margaret Brooks.""
My grandmother.
Dad's mother.
The woman who had held Grace in the hospital and kissed her tiny forehead.
The woman who had told me Nathan would make a wonderful father.
I stared at the screen, unable to breathe.
"That's impossible.""
Dad didn't move.
Then his phone began ringing.
He glanced at the caller ID.
His face went cold.
It was Margaret.
He answered.
"Mother?""
A woman's voice came through the speaker, loud enough for me to hear.
"Alexander, whatever happens at that hotel, do not let Danielle see the original DNA report.""
May you like
My father looked at me.
And I realized the woman who had just humiliated me in the lobby might not have been the most dangerous person in my family.
