Chapter 11: The Woman Who Witnessed Everything

Patricia Wells arrived at the hospital just after midnight.

She was in her late fifties, wearing a gray coat and carrying a worn leather handbag.

Two detectives accompanied her.

The moment she entered Daniel's room, she looked at my father.

"Mr. Brooks.""

Dad stood.

"Patricia. It's been a long time.""

She nodded.

"I wish we were meeting under different circumstances.""

Her eyes moved toward me.

"You're Danielle.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

She approached slowly.

"You look just like your mother.""

My throat tightened.

"Did you know her?""

Patricia sat beside me.

"I worked for your grandmother for eleven years. I also helped your mother with some of her charity projects.""

She opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"I kept this because I couldn't bring myself to destroy it.""

My mother's handwriting was on the front.

For Danielle, when she is old enough to understand.

I covered my mouth.

"Where did you get this?""

"Your mother gave it to me two days before she died.""

Dad stared at the envelope.

"Why didn't you give it to me?""

Patricia looked at him.

"Because Margaret told me your wife had become unstable. She said you had instructed everyone to keep personal belongings away from the children.""

Dad lowered his head.

"I never gave that instruction.""

"I know that now.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of my mother holding me as a baby.

On the back, she'd written:

My darling girl, never let anyone convince you that love must be earned through obedience.

I began crying.

There was also a small key.

And a folded note.

Locker 214. Peachtree Station. The truth is waiting.

I looked at Patricia.

"What is this?""

"Your mother rented a private storage locker at the train station. She told me that if anything happened to her, I should give you the key when you were old enough.""

Dad took a breath.

"Why wait fourteen years?""

Patricia's eyes filled.

"Because Margaret threatened to have me arrested if I ever mentioned it. She told me she had enough influence to make sure I'd never work again.""

Detective Mitchell stepped forward.

"We've been trying to locate the locker. The station has agreed to preserve it while we obtain the necessary authorization.""

I looked at the key.

"Can we go now?""

The detective shook her head.

"Not without securing the location. But we'll arrange it first thing tomorrow.""

Patricia nodded.

"There's something else you need to know.""

Everyone turned toward her.

"On the night your mother died, I was in Margaret's office. I heard her arguing with someone on the telephone.""

Dad frowned.

"Who?""

"I couldn't hear the other person's name. But I heard Margaret say, 'The girl must never inherit control. Not while she's alive.''"

My stomach tightened.

"She was talking about me?""

Patricia nodded.

"Yes.""

Then she looked at Daniel.

"And your grandmother wasn't acting alone.""

Daniel sat up.

"Who else?""

Patricia hesitated.

"Your husband's name came up in conversations years before he met you.""

I stared at her.

"Nathan?""

"Yes. Margaret had been monitoring his career. She knew his family, his financial situation, and his ambitions.""

Dad shook his head.

"That's impossible. Nathan wasn't even in our social circle.""

"Your mother found correspondence proving otherwise.""

Patricia reached into her handbag again.

She removed a photocopy of an old email.

The date was five years before my wedding.

The sender was Margaret.

The recipient was someone using an account associated with Whitmore Development.

The subject line read:

*BROOKS FAMILY SUCCESSION PLAN.*

I read the message.

The young man is suitable. He understands the financial implications and appears willing to cooperate. The relationship must develop naturally. Danielle must believe the decision is entirely her own.

My fingers went numb.

Beneath the message was a reply.

Understood. Nathan will be introduced at the charity event.

I looked at Dad.

"Was that how I met Nathan?""

He nodded slowly.

"Your grandmother introduced him at a charity gala.""

I remembered that evening.

Nathan had spilled champagne on my dress, apologized repeatedly, and offered to help me clean it.

I'd laughed.

We'd exchanged numbers.

It had felt like the beginning of a romantic comedy.

Now I was looking at evidence that the entire encounter might have been planned.

Patricia continued.

"Your mother discovered the correspondence. She intended to expose everything.""

Dad stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me this before?""

Patricia's voice broke.

"Because I was afraid.""

The detective stepped forward.

"Ms. Wells, are you willing to make a formal statement?""

"Yes.""

She looked at me.

"There's one more thing. Margaret didn't just want Danielle's inheritance.""

"What else did she want?""

Patricia leaned closer.

"She wanted control of the company before Alexander discovered the money was missing.""

Dad went still.

"How much money?""

Patricia looked at him.

"More than twelve million dollars.""

Richard immediately checked his tablet.

"Sir, that amount matches the missing capital identified in our preliminary audit.""

Dad closed his eyes.

Then his phone rang.

A message appeared from the security team.

*MARGARET BROOKS HAS ENTERED BROOKS HOLDINGS. SHE IS REQUESTING AN EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING.*

A second message followed.

*SHE HAS PRESENTED DOCUMENTS CLAIMING ALEXANDER BROOKS IS UNFIT TO REMAIN CHAIRMAN.*

Dad looked at me.

"She's making her move.""

I looked down at my daughter.

Grace was sleeping peacefully.

I kissed her forehead.

May you like

For fourteen years, my family had protected Margaret's secrets.

Now I was going to make sure she couldn't hide behind another one.
