Chapter 9: The Room Beneath The Foundation

The entrance was hidden behind an old maintenance hallway beneath the country club.

A place most guests would never see.

A place designed to be forgotten.

I followed Daniel, Evelyn, and Clara through the narrow corridor.

Every step felt heavier.

My father had walked here.

He had hidden something here.

Something important enough that people were willing to destroy lives to keep it buried.

The old metal door stood at the end of the hallway.

Rust covered the edges.

Clara inserted the key.

Her hand shook.

“I haven’t opened this since the night your father gave it to me.””

I looked at her.

“You had this for four years?””

She nodded.

“I was afraid.””

I understood that.

Fear had controlled everyone around this story.

Fear of the Whitmores.

Fear of losing everything.

Fear of the truth.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room.

A desk.

Several storage boxes.

Old photographs.

And a single chair.

My father’s chair.

I stopped breathing.

For a moment, I forgot everything else.

Because this was the closest I had been to him in years.

I touched the desk.

“He was here.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Clara walked toward a box.

“He told me if anything happened to him, I needed to protect this.””

She opened it.

Inside were several items.

A notebook.

A small recording device.

And a sealed envelope.

My hands trembled.

Another message.

Another secret.

Daniel looked at the notebook.

“This could change everything.””

Before anyone could touch it, Evelyn spoke.

“Wait.””

We turned.

She looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“There’s something you need to know first.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She looked at the evidence.

Then at me.

“Your father wasn’t only investigating Richard.””

The room went silent.

“Then who?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“He was investigating me.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She closed her eyes.

“Your father discovered I knew more than I admitted.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Evelyn…”

“I lied to him.””

The words echoed.

I stepped back.

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I thought I was protecting my family.””

I looked at the evidence.

At my father’s final secrets.

At the woman who had known the truth.

Then suddenly—

The recording device on the desk turned on.

Nobody touched it.

A familiar voice filled the room.

My father.

“If you are hearing this…”

Everyone froze.

“But Evelyn is standing with you…”

The recording paused.

My blood went cold.

Then my father continued.

“Ask her one question.””

The room became silent.

“What question?”” Daniel whispered.

The recording answered.

“Ask Evelyn why she was the last person to see me alive.””

I looked at Evelyn.

Her face had lost all color.

May you like

And for the first time since I met her…

she looked truly afraid.
