Chapter 11: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much
I stared at the name.
Madison.
My mind struggled to process it.
The same girl who dragged me across the garden.
The same girl who locked me away.
The same girl who acted like she owned the entire country club.
But my father had written her name.
Why?
“She was involved?”” I asked.
Daniel looked through the notebook.
“Not exactly.””
“Then why is her name here?””
He turned the pages carefully.
“There’s more.””
The handwriting became faster.
Messier.
Like my father had written it in a hurry.
Daniel read aloud.
“Madison is not the architect. She is the weakness.””
The room went silent.
“The weakness?”” Clara repeated.
Daniel continued.
“Her actions are reckless. Emotional. She believes she is protecting the family, but she does not understand the full truth.””
I felt something change inside me.
For the first time, I saw Madison differently.
Not as innocent.
Not as a victim.
But as someone who had been manipulated.
“What else did he write?””
Daniel continued.
“He said she had access.””
“To what?””
“The foundation records.””
Evelyn suddenly looked alarmed.
“Richard used her.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
Evelyn walked toward the notebook.
“Madison always wanted her father’s approval.””
Nobody responded.
Because everyone knew someone like that.
Someone who would do anything to prove they mattered.
Daniel closed the notebook.
“Where is she now?””
We all looked around.
Madison wasn’t there.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She left.””
Clara looked worried.
“When?””
Nobody knew.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered immediately.
“Yes?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
He walked away.
A few seconds later, he returned.
“We need to go.””
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Madison disappeared.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“She left the country club ten minutes ago.””
Evelyn stood.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because she knows she’s the only person who can explain what happened tonight.””
We rushed back upstairs.
The gala had completely changed.
The celebration was gone.
Police officers stood near the entrance.
Guests whispered in small groups.
Everyone knew something serious had happened.
Then I saw something.
A woman standing near the exit.
Madison.
My heart jumped.
“Madison!””
She turned.
Her face was pale.
She looked nothing like the confident girl from earlier.
She looked terrified.
Daniel moved toward her.
“Where were you?””
She ignored him.
She looked at me.
“I need to talk to you.””
I almost laughed.
“After what you did?””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
The apology surprised me.
“I know I hurt you.””
“You locked me in a shed.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“But I didn’t know why.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
She looked around.
Then whispered:
“My father told me you were dangerous.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He told me your father left something behind that could destroy us.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Richard knew about the evidence?””
Madison nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why attack Emma?””
Madison looked ashamed.
“Because I thought if she missed the speech, nobody would listen to her.””
The answer was horrible.
But honest.
“You tried to silence me.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“I thought I was protecting my family.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Madison.””
Her daughter looked at her.
“I’m sorry, Mom.””
Evelyn’s face softened slightly.
But before anyone could respond, Madison reached into her jacket.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
Everyone froze.
“What is that?”” Daniel asked.
Madison looked at me.
“The thing my father was searching for.””
I stared.
“You had it?””
She nodded.
“He gave it to me three months ago.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
Madison’s voice shook.
“Because he thought if something happened to him…”
She looked at the police.
Then at Daniel.
Then at me.
“…I would know what to do.””
My heart pounded.
“What’s on it?””
Madison looked terrified.
“Proof that your father wasn’t the only person Richard tried to destroy.””
A police officer suddenly approached.
“Everyone step back.””
We turned.
“What happened?””
The officer looked toward the entrance.
“Mr. Richard Whitmore has been found.””
Nobody moved.
“Where?””
The officer hesitated.
Then answered:
“At the airport.””
Daniel frowned.
“Did he leave?””
The officer shook his head.
“No.””
A strange silence followed.
“Then what happened?””
The officer looked at me.
“He was waiting for someone.””
My blood went cold.
“Who?””
The officer opened his notebook.
May you like
And read the name.
“Emma Carter.””
