Chapter 12: The Meeting Richard Planned
The police did not let me go alone.
Daniel insisted on coming.
Evelyn insisted too.
But I refused to hide.
Not anymore.
For four years, people made decisions about my life without telling me.
My father.
The Whitmores.
Everyone.
I was done being the person left in the dark.
We found Richard sitting inside a private airport lounge.
No guards.
No escape plan.
No anger.
Just him sitting quietly with a cup of coffee.
Like he had been waiting for a meeting.
When he saw me, he smiled.
“I knew you would come.””
I stopped several feet away.
“You planned this.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
Then Evelyn.
Then me.
“Because I wanted you to hear the truth before everyone else changes it.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don’t get to control the story anymore.””
Richard ignored him.
He looked at me.
“Your father was not the hero you think he was.””
The words hurt.
But I didn’t react.
“Explain.””
Richard leaned back.
“Your father found corruption.””
“Yes.””
“But he also found something else.””
“What?””
Richard looked directly at me.
“He discovered the person who started it all.””
The room became silent.
I felt my heartbeat.
“Who?””
Richard smiled.
“Someone you trust.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
But I stopped him.
“No.””
I looked at Richard.
“Who?””
Richard reached into his coat.
The officers immediately moved.
But he slowly removed a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I picked it up.
And froze.
It was my father.
Standing outside the country club.
The night he died.
But he wasn’t alone.
Someone was standing beside him.
Someone I knew.
Someone I never expected.
My fingers trembled.
“No…”
Richard watched my reaction.
“You see?””
I couldn’t breathe.
Because the person in the photograph was impossible.
The person beside my father was someone who had spent years claiming they wanted justice.
Someone who had helped me tonight.
Someone who had earned my trust.
I looked up slowly.
Richard whispered:
“Ask Daniel Hayes why he lied about what happened that night.””
The entire world seemed to stop.
I turned toward Daniel.
May you like
And for the first time…
he looked afraid.
