Chapter 3: The Secret My Father Left Behind

I stared at Daniel Hayes, waiting for him to explain.

But he didn’t.

Not immediately.

Instead, he looked around the garden.

At Madison.

At the country club.

At the people who had gathered nearby pretending not to listen.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Emma, we need to leave this area.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Why?””

“Because whoever planned this wanted you isolated.””

The words made my stomach drop.

Madison suddenly stepped forward.

“You’re making a huge mistake.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No. The mistake was thinking nobody would notice.””

Her face hardened.

“You have no idea who my family is.””

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“I know exactly who your family is.””

That answer seemed to shake her.

Brittany grabbed Madison’s arm.

“Maybe we should call your father.””

Madison looked at her.

“No.””

One word.

But it revealed everything.

She wasn’t confident anymore.

She was scared.

I stepped out of the shed slowly.

My legs felt weak after sitting on the floor for so long.

The woman beside Daniel immediately removed her coat and placed it around my shoulders.

“You don’t have to explain anything right now,” she said.

Her kindness almost broke me.

Because for the last hour, everyone had treated me like I was invisible.

I looked back at Madison.

“Why?””

The question came out quietly.

“Why did you do this?””

Madison stared at me.

For a second, I thought she might apologize.

She didn’t.

Instead, she laughed softly.

“You really don’t know, do you?””

Daniel moved between us.

“Enough.””

But Madison looked directly at me.

“You think you earned that scholarship?””

My face tightened.

“What?””

She smiled.

“You think people cared about your speech? Your story?””

I felt my chest tighten.

Madison stepped closer.

“My family created that program.””

The words hung in the air.

Then she whispered:

“And your father ruined everything.””

I froze.

“My father?””

Daniel’s eyes changed.

He had heard something important.

“What did you just say?””

Madison immediately looked away.

Too late.

Everyone heard it.

Daniel walked closer.

“What did Emma’s father have to do with your family?””

Madison said nothing.

The silence answered for her.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emma, there’s something you need to know.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

“Your father wasn’t just a man who worked hard and left you behind.””

My heart tightened.

“He was investigating the Whitmore Foundation.””

The world seemed to slow.

The scholarship.

The gala.

The people smiling inside the ballroom.

None of it was random.

“What was he investigating?””

Daniel looked at the sealed envelope in his hand.

“This.””

I stared at it.

“What is inside?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Evidence your father collected before he died.””

A cold wind moved through the garden.

Madison suddenly stepped forward.

“You can’t show her that.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

For the first time, Madison had no answer.

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Madison.””

She looked away.

And I realized something terrifying.

She wasn’t afraid because she had been caught bullying me.

She was afraid because she knew what was inside that envelope.

Daniel slowly handed it to me.

My fingers touched the seal.

And just before I opened it, my smartwatch vibrated again.

Another emergency alert.

But this time…

it wasn’t from me.

Daniel looked down at his own device.

His face changed.

“What is it?””

I asked.

He looked toward the road.

“There’s someone else coming.””

“Who?””

Daniel stared at the approaching headlights.

Then he whispered:

“The person your father warned us about.””

The three black SUVs were no longer the biggest surprise of the night.

Because another car was arriving.

And everyone standing there knew exactly who was inside.
