Chapter 7: The Recording My Father Left Behind
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
My father’s voice filled the ballroom.
A voice I hadn’t heard in four years.
A voice I had heard only in old recordings saved on my computer.
But this was different.
This was him speaking to me.
Live.
Or at least it felt that way.
“Emma,” the recording said.
“If you are hearing this, then the truth has finally reached you.””
My knees almost weakened.
I gripped the edge of the podium.
The entire room watched me.
The wealthy donors.
The board members.
The people who had spent the night pretending nothing was wrong.
Now they were all forced to listen.
The recording continued.
“I know you may feel angry. You may feel confused. You may wonder why I kept secrets from you.””
My eyes filled.
Because those were exactly the questions I had carried for years.
Why didn’t he tell me?
Why did I have to learn about his hidden life after he was gone?
“I wanted to protect you,” my father’s voice continued.
“But protecting you meant keeping you away from something dangerous.””
Richard Whitmore stepped forward.
“Turn this off.””
Nobody listened.
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?””
Richard’s face tightened.
“This is inappropriate.””
Evelyn slowly turned toward him.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“But it is necessary.””
The recording continued.
“The Whitmore Foundation was created to help students. That was the promise. But over time, certain people changed that mission.””
A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.
Richard looked around.
“You’re believing a dead man’s accusations?””
Daniel answered immediately.
“We’re listening to evidence.””
Richard laughed.
“Evidence?””
He pointed toward the screens.
“This could be edited.””
That was when Daniel smiled slightly.
“Interesting.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
“You were the first person to suggest it was edited.””
The room went quiet.
Richard realized his mistake.
I watched him carefully.
For years, I thought powerful people were fearless.
But standing there, I saw something different.
They were only fearless when they controlled the story.
My father’s voice continued.
“I discovered money was being moved through private accounts connected to the foundation.””
Gasps filled the room.
Madison looked at her mother.
Evelyn’s expression didn’t change.
Because she already knew.
“My investigation led me to one conclusion.””
The recording paused.
A long, painful pause.
Then:
“The person responsible was not an outsider.””
Everyone held their breath.
“It was someone inside the Whitmore family.””
The room exploded.
People started talking.
Questions.
Accusations.
Richard immediately looked toward the sound system.
“Who installed this?””
No answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Someone who wanted the truth heard.””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“You think you’ve won?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
Because suddenly, the screens changed.
A new image appeared.
Not a video.
Not a document.
A photograph.
My father standing beside a younger Evelyn Whitmore.
The room went silent.
I stared.
“You knew him.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Yes.””
“How close were you?””
Her eyes lowered.
“Closer than anyone knew.””
Madison looked shocked.
“Mom?””
Evelyn didn’t look away from me.
“Your father and I worked together.””
Richard’s face turned pale.
“That’s impossible.””
Evelyn finally looked at him.
“No, Richard.””
Her voice became colder.
“What’s impossible is that you thought you could bury the truth forever.””
My heart raced.
“You worked with my father?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let me believe nobody knew what happened?””
Pain crossed her face.
“Because I was afraid.””
That answer surprised me.
“Afraid of what?””
Evelyn looked toward Richard.
Before she could answer, the ballroom doors opened.
A security officer rushed inside.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Richard turned.
“What?””
The officer looked nervous.
“The police are outside.””
The room froze.
Richard’s expression changed.
“For what?””
The officer swallowed.
“They received evidence regarding financial fraud and obstruction connected to the foundation.””
Everyone turned toward Richard.
But Richard wasn’t looking at the officer.
He was looking at me.
And for the first time…
I saw hatred.
Not anger.
Not embarrassment.
Hatred.
“You have no idea what your father started,” he whispered.
I stepped back.
“What does that mean?””
Richard smiled.
A cold, empty smile.
“It means you still don’t know the worst part.””
Then he walked toward the exit.
Daniel moved.
“Stop him.””
But before anyone could react, Richard pressed something on his watch.
The lights went out.
May you like
And when they came back…
Richard Whitmore was gone.
