Chapter 14: The Truth My Family Buried
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
“My mother?””
The word felt impossible.
My mother had died before my father.
That was what I had always been told.
A tragic accident.
A closed chapter.
A painful memory.
But Daniel’s face told me there was more.
“My mother was there?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“She was.””
Richard looked uncomfortable for the first time.
Even he didn’t expect that.
Evelyn whispered:
“That changes everything.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew?””
She looked devastated.
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I’m tired of hearing that.””
My voice shook.
“Everyone knew pieces of my life except me.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I wiped my eyes.
“You need to understand something.””
I looked around the room.
“My whole life, I thought I lost my parents because of bad luck.””
Nobody moved.
“But now I’m finding out people were hiding things.””
I looked at Richard.
“At my father.””
Then Evelyn.
“At my family.””
Then Daniel.
“At me.””
The silence was painful.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“Your mother wasn’t supposed to be there.””
“Why was she?””
“Because she followed your father.””
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because she knew he was in danger.””
My chest tightened.
“My mother knew?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Daniel looked toward Richard.
Richard looked away.
That told me enough.
“She discovered Richard was planning something.””
Richard suddenly stood.
“Careful.””
The police officers immediately moved.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don’t threaten her anymore.””
Richard glared.
“You think you know everything?””
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“But I know enough.””
I looked at Richard.
“What happened to my mother?””
Richard said nothing.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“She survived.””
The room froze.
I turned.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“No, that’s impossible.””
“My father died.””
“Yes.””
“My mother died.””
Evelyn looked down.
“Your mother wanted the world to believe she was gone.””
I felt dizzy.
“Why?””
Daniel answered.
“Because she was the only witness.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“To what?””
“To what Richard did.””
Everyone looked at Richard.
His face had lost its confidence.
For the first time, he looked cornered.
“My mother is alive?””
Daniel nodded.
“She has been in hiding.””
“Where?””
He reached into his jacket.
Not a weapon.
Not a document.
A small piece of paper.
An address.
I stared at it.
“She has been waiting.””
My hands trembled.
“Waiting for what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“For you to be old enough to know the truth.””
I couldn’t speak.
Four years of grief.
Four years of believing I was alone.
And now my mother was alive.
Before I could process it, Richard suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
“You really think she will tell you everything?””
Daniel frowned.
Richard looked at me.
“Your mother has secrets too.””
I stared.
“What secrets?””
Richard smiled.
“The reason your father trusted me once.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Evelyn.
At Daniel.
Nobody answered.
Richard continued.
“Ask your mother why your father was investigating her before he died.””
My heart sank.
Another secret.
Another question.
Another person who knew more than me.
But this time…
I wasn’t afraid.
Because I finally understood something.
The truth wasn’t something people gave me.
It was something I had to take.
I grabbed the address from Daniel.
“I’m going.””
Daniel nodded.
“I’ll come with you.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know if I trust you.””
He accepted that.
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised me.
“But I will still help you find the truth.””
Outside the airport, the night air hit my face.
For the first time in years…
I wasn’t chasing memories of my parents.
I was chasing answers.

And somewhere in the city…
my mother was waiting.
