Chapter 2: The People Who Came Looking
The shed was still dark, but I could hear everything outside.
Footsteps.
Several pairs.
Calm.
Controlled.
Not rushed.
That scared Madison more than shouting would have.
I pressed my ear against the wall.
“Who are they?”” Brittany whispered.
Nobody answered.
A car door closed.
Then another.
The sound echoed across the empty garden.
Madison’s confidence disappeared.
“Dad didn’t tell me anyone important was arriving tonight.””
Chloe lowered her voice.
“Maybe they’re donors?””
“No,” Madison replied.
I had never heard uncertainty in her voice before.
Until now.
The small gap in the wooden wall gave me a narrow view of the driveway.
Three black SUVs stood beneath the lights.
Several people stepped out.
A man in a dark suit walked ahead.
He wasn’t wearing anything flashy.
No expensive watch.
No dramatic entrance.
Just quiet confidence.
Behind him were two women and another man carrying a small medical bag.
My confusion grew.
Why would people like this come here?
Then I heard a voice.
“Where is Emma Carter?””
My breath stopped.
My name.
The man knew my name.
Outside the shed, Madison suddenly stepped forward.
“Excuse me, but who are you?””
The man looked at her.
“I asked where Emma Carter is.””
Madison forced a laugh.
“She left.””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“She didn’t.””
Silence.
I watched Madison’s face change.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
The man looked toward the shed.
My heart jumped.
He knew.
“She activated an emergency alert twenty-three minutes ago.””
The color disappeared from Madison’s face.
Brittany looked at her.
“Madison…”
“You said nobody would know,” Chloe whispered.
Madison ignored them.
“This is ridiculous. Emma is probably trying to create drama.””
The man’s expression hardened.
“Someone who needs help does not create drama.””
He took a step closer.
“Someone who is trapped sends a signal.””
My eyes filled with tears.
Someone believed me.
After hours of feeling invisible, someone finally believed me.
The man turned toward the shed.
“Emma?””
My voice shook.
“I’m here.””
Everyone outside went quiet.
“Are you hurt?””
“I’m okay.””
It was a lie.
My wrist still hurt.
My scalp burned.
But I didn’t want to sound weak.
The man looked at the locked door.
“Who locked this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Madison spoke.
“She walked in there herself.””
I stared through the crack.
I couldn’t believe she said it.
The man slowly turned.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Madison lifted her chin.
“She wanted attention.””
The woman standing beside him stepped forward.
Her voice was calm.
“Then why did you take her phone?””
Madison froze.
My eyes widened.
How did she know?
The woman looked toward Madison’s purse.
“Because your security cameras caught you removing it from her hand.””
The garden became silent.
Brittany stepped backward.
“You recorded that?””
“No,” the man replied.
“Someone else did.””
Madison looked around.
Her confidence was collapsing piece by piece.
Then the man reached for the lock.
“Emma, stand back.””
A moment later, the door opened.
Light flooded the shed.
I covered my eyes.
After being trapped in darkness, the world felt unreal.
The man looked at me.
Not with pity.
With respect.
“Are you Emma Carter?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
He extended his hand.
“My name is Daniel Hayes.””
I slowly took it.
“Why were you looking for me?””
His expression changed.
Because whatever answer he had…
it was bigger than the scholarship.
Daniel looked over his shoulder at Madison.
Then back at me.
“Because your father asked us to find you.””
My heart stopped.
“My father?””
I swallowed.
“My father died four years ago.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel’s face became serious.
“That’s impossible.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What do you mean?””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
Not a phone.
Not a document for me to read.
Just something sealed.
Something that had clearly been protected.
“Because three days before his death,” Daniel said quietly, “your father told us something about tonight.””
My hands went cold.
“What did he tell you?””
Daniel looked toward Madison.
And Madison looked terrified.
“He told us…”
He paused.
“He told us that if you ever disappeared during this event, we needed to come immediately.””
The garden fell silent.
And for the first time, I realized something.
May you like
My father had known this would happen.
But he never told me why.
