Chapter 8: The Secret Lily Hid
The archive room stayed silent after Alexander left.
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at Lily.
For years, he imagined their reunion.
He imagined anger.
Tears.
An apology.
But he never imagined doubt.
“What is he talking about?””
Lily looked away.
Daniel’s heart sank.
“Lily.””
She closed her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
A painful silence followed.
Noah looked between them.
“My mom didn’t leave because she hated you.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I know.””
Noah shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“She never hated you.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“How do you know?””
“Because every birthday she made me write a letter.””
Daniel froze.
“To me?””
Noah nodded.
“She said maybe one day you would read them.””
Lily covered her mouth.
Daniel stared.
“You kept letters?””
Lily nodded.
“In a box.””
“Where?””
She hesitated.
“At the farmhouse.””
The farmhouse.
The address from the letter.
Daniel looked down.
“What else did you hide?””
Lily sat down.
“I was pregnant when I left.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
The words he had waited his entire life to hear suddenly felt impossible.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“You were carrying my grandchild.””
“I was scared.””
“Of me?””
Lily shook her head.
“Of what would happen if Alexander found out.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why?””
Lily looked at Noah.
“Because Noah wasn’t just your grandson.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Lily reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Inside was a medical report.
Daniel read it.
Then read it again.
“What is this?””
Lily looked at him.
“When Noah was born, doctors found something unusual.””
Daniel stared.
“Unusual?””
“He had a rare genetic marker.””
Daniel looked at Noah.
“What kind?””
Lily hesitated.
“The same marker connected to our family.””
Daniel didn’t understand.
“What are you saying?””
Lily whispered:
“Grandfather believed our bloodline carried something valuable.””
Daniel remembered his father’s obsession with legacy.
“He wanted to use Noah?””
Lily nodded.
“He wanted to control him.””
Noah looked frightened.
Daniel immediately moved closer.
“Nobody is controlling you.””
But Lily continued.
“Your father believed the next generation of Cross heirs would be more than just business leaders.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What did he know?””
Lily looked toward the dark archive.
“Too much.””
The answer made Daniel uncomfortable.
Before he could ask more, his phone rang.
A security alert.
Daniel answered.
“What happened?””
His security director sounded worried.
“Sir, someone broke into your private residence.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What was taken?””
A pause.
“Nothing.””
“Then why call me?””
The director hesitated.
“Because they left something behind.””
Daniel felt cold.
“What?””
“A box.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“What kind of box?””
The answer came slowly.
“An old wooden box.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
Because he knew exactly what it was.
The box where he kept every memory of Lily.
Every childhood photo.
Every letter.
Every piece of his daughter he never let go.
“Bring it here.””
Twenty minutes later, the box arrived.
Daniel opened it carefully.
Inside were his old photographs.
Except one was missing.
The picture of Lily from the day she disappeared.
Instead, there was another photograph.
A recent one.
Daniel picked it up.
His blood froze.
It showed Noah outside his apartment.
Taken three days earlier.
Someone had been watching him.
Watching Lily.
Watching Noah.
On the back of the photograph were six words.
*You should have stayed away.*
Noah stepped closer.
“Who took that?””
Daniel turned the picture over.
There was a small symbol in the corner.
A symbol he recognized.
A symbol from his father’s old company files.

And suddenly Daniel realized something.
Alexander wasn’t working alone.
