Chapter 4: The Brother Behind The Lie

Daniel Cross had spent fourteen years searching for one person.

Lily.

He had searched cities, countries, private records, old friendships, every possible place where his daughter might have gone.

But he had never searched inside his own family.

Because he never imagined the person standing closest to him could be the one hiding the truth.

“My brother?”” Daniel repeated.

Noah nodded slowly.

“He came to our apartment.””

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“When?””

“About six months ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Noah looked uncomfortable.

“Because my mom told me never to talk about him.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“What exactly did he say?””

Noah looked down at his hands.

“He said my mother made a mistake.””

The words cut deeper than Daniel expected.

“What mistake?””

Noah swallowed.

“He said she should have stayed away from the Cross family.””

Daniel walked toward the desk and placed both hands against it.

His younger brother, Alexander Cross.

The only person Daniel had trusted after losing Lily.

The man who had helped him manage the company during the darkest years.

The man who always told him:

“Some things are better left in the past.””

Daniel suddenly understood those words differently.

The office door opened.

Alexander walked in.

Perfect timing.

Almost too perfect.

He wore a tailored gray suit and a calm expression.

“Daniel, I heard there was an incident.””

Then he saw Noah.

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Daniel noticed.

A flicker of fear.

Alexander recovered quickly.

“What is this?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He watched his brother.

The same face he had known his entire life.

The same person who stood beside him at their parents’ funeral.

The same person who promised:

“I’ll help you find Lily.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“You know this boy?””

Alexander looked at Noah.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

Noah noticed too.

“He’s lying,” Noah whispered.

Alexander turned sharply.

“What did you say?””

Noah moved closer to Daniel.

“You came to our apartment.””

Silence.

Alexander’s face hardened.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

One word.

But it carried years of authority.

Alexander looked at him.

“Daniel, whatever this child thinks happened—”

“This child knows your face.””

Alexander stopped.

Daniel picked up the photograph.

“He knows Lily.””

The room became silent.

For the first time, Alexander lost control.

“Where did you get that?””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

There it was.

The reaction.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You know her.””

Alexander looked away.

“That picture is old.””

“You know her.””

“Daniel—”

“Where is my daughter?””

The question exploded through the room.

Alexander’s expression changed.

For fourteen years, Daniel had waited to ask that question again.

But this time, he wasn’t begging.

He was demanding the truth.

Alexander slowly sat down.

“You don’t understand.””

Daniel laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“You’re right. I don’t.””

He pointed toward Noah.

“I don’t understand why a twelve-year-old boy was hidden from me.””

Alexander remained silent.

“I don’t understand why my missing daughter’s child was forced to live like a stranger.””

Noah looked between them.

“My mom said you were a good man.””

Daniel looked at him.

The pain in those words was unbearable.

Alexander stood.

“Daniel, listen to me. Lily made choices.””

Daniel’s eyes sharpened.

“What choices?””

“She left.””

The sentence hung in the air.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She disappeared.””

“Because she wanted to.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“No, that’s what you told me.””

Alexander looked away.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew where she was.””

Alexander didn’t answer.

And that silence was the answer.

Daniel felt something inside him break.

“You knew.””

Alexander finally looked up.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel stared at him.

“From my own daughter?””

“From the consequences.””

“What consequences?””

Alexander’s expression became darker.

“You have no idea what Lily discovered.””

Daniel froze.

“What did she discover?””

Before Alexander could answer, Noah suddenly spoke.

“My mom said someone was afraid she would tell the truth.””

Daniel looked at Alexander.

“What truth?””

Alexander’s eyes moved toward Noah.

And for the first time, Daniel saw something he never wanted to see.

His brother was afraid of a child.

The lights outside the office flickered as a storm began forming over the academy.

Then Alexander quietly said:

“Your daughter wasn’t running away from you, Daniel.””

A pause.

“She was running away from someone who wanted her silent.””

Daniel’s heart raced.

“Who?””

Alexander looked directly at him.

“Your father.””

Daniel froze.

Because his father had been dead for ten years.

May you like

And somehow…

He was still part of the secret.
