Chapter 12: The Daughter’s Hidden Choice
The drive back to the academy was silent.
Nobody spoke.
Not Daniel.
Not Lily.
Not Noah.
The secret hanging between them was heavier than anything they had discovered.
Finally, Daniel pulled the car over.
“Tell me.””
Lily stared out the window.
“I was going to.””
“When?””
“When I knew you were ready.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Ready for what?””
She closed her eyes.
“The truth.””
Noah sat quietly in the back seat.
Listening.
Waiting.
Lily took a deep breath.
“When I found out what Alexander and your father were planning, I didn’t just run.””
Daniel waited.
“I fought back.””
“How?””
“I took something.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Proof.””
She looked at him.
“Everything your father hid.””
Daniel understood.
“The company records.””
“Yes.””
“Where are they?””
Lily looked down.
“I destroyed them.””
Daniel froze.
“You destroyed evidence?””
“I made copies first.””
A pause.
“Then I erased the originals.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Why?””
“Because I knew Alexander would use them to hurt people.””
Daniel looked at the road ahead.
“You risked everything.””
“I had to.””
Noah spoke quietly.
“You were trying to help.””
Lily looked back.
“Yes.””
The answer was simple.
Daniel realized something.
His daughter had not run away because she was weak.
She had run because she was fighting alone.
“I should have found you.””
Lily looked at him.
“You searched.””
“But not enough.””
She didn’t argue.
Because both knew.
He had searched for a missing daughter.
But he had never searched for a daughter who was hiding from powerful people.
When they returned to the academy, Daniel immediately went to his office.
He opened the old company archives.
The documents.
The files.
The hidden records.
Everything connected to his father.
And then he found it.
A missing page.
Someone had removed it years ago.
Daniel stared.
“What was on this?””
Lily walked beside him.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel looked at the empty space.
“But someone wanted it gone.””
His assistant entered suddenly.
“Mr. Cross.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
She looked nervous.
“We found Alexander’s location.””
Daniel stood.
“Where?””
She placed a file on the desk.
“He’s at Cross Industries headquarters.””
Daniel frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because nobody can enter that building without authorization.””
The assistant hesitated.
“He didn’t enter.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then how?””
She opened the file.
“He’s been there for three days.””
Silence.
Daniel stared at the security records.
Three days.
Alexander had been inside his company the entire time.
Working.
Planning.
Waiting.
Lily whispered:
“He wanted you to find Noah.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because he needed you distracted.””
A cold feeling moved through him.
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“Call headquarters.””
The call connected.
A security officer answered.
“Mr. Cross?””
Daniel’s voice was sharp.
“Lock down the building.””
A pause.
“Sir?””
“Now.””
The officer hesitated.
“Mr. Cross, there’s a problem.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What problem?””
The officer swallowed.
“The board meeting has already started.””
Daniel froze.
“What board meeting?””
The answer came quietly.
“The emergency meeting called by your brother.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
Then at Noah.
Because Alexander wasn’t trying to take Noah anymore.
He was taking something much bigger.
The company.
The legacy.
Everything Daniel had spent his life building.
And when the security officer spoke again, Daniel felt the ground disappear beneath him.
“Sir…”
A pause.
“Your brother is presenting documents proving you are unfit to lead Cross Industries.””
Daniel stared at the phone.
Then Lily whispered the words that terrified him most.
“He’s using the same plan your grandfather created.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because he finally understood.
Alexander never wanted Noah.
Not completely.
May you like
Noah was only the key.
The real target had always been Daniel Cross.
