Chapter 6: The Woman Who Never Left

Daniel didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did Noah.

The second envelope sat on the desk between them like a warning.

Daniel stared at it for several minutes before touching it.

Because Lily’s first letter had changed everything.

And now another one had appeared.

Fourteen years later.

Impossible.

Unless someone knew where Lily was.

Unless someone had been watching.

Noah looked worried.

“Should you open it?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Noah frowned.

“You’re the billionaire.””

Daniel almost smiled.

“That doesn’t make me fearless.””

Noah looked surprised.

“Really?””

Daniel nodded.

“The people who have everything are usually the ones most afraid of losing it.””

Slowly, Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

No signature.

No explanation.

Only an address.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

An old farmhouse outside the city.

The place where Lily used to spend summers as a child.

His heart started racing.

“She’s there.””

Noah stood.

“My mom?””

Daniel nodded.

“I think so.””

But before they could leave, Daniel’s security alarm activated.

Red lights flashed through the office.

Someone had entered the building.

Daniel immediately moved in front of Noah.

The door opened.

A security officer rushed inside.

“Sir, we found someone in the archives.””

Daniel looked tense.

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

“A woman.””

Daniel froze.

“Describe her.””

The officer looked at Noah.

Then back at Daniel.

“She asked for you.””

Daniel’s heartbeat stopped.

“Her name?””

The officer swallowed.

“Lily Cross.””

For fourteen years, Daniel had imagined this moment.

A thousand different versions.

A thousand conversations.

But none prepared him for the fear he felt now.

Because if Lily was finally back…

Someone had kept her away.

Someone had hurt her.

And someone might still be watching.

Daniel grabbed his coat.

“Take me to her.””

The archive room was beneath the oldest building on campus.

A place rarely used.

When Daniel entered, the world seemed to slow down.

A woman stood beside the shelves.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

The same eyes.

The same face he had searched for every day.

Lily.

She turned.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then her eyes landed on Noah.

And tears filled her face.

“My son…”

Noah ran toward her.

Daniel watched them hold each other.

The reunion he dreamed about was happening.

But instead of feeling complete…

He felt confused.

Because Lily looked terrified.

She looked over Noah’s shoulder.

Straight at Daniel.

“Dad…”

Her voice broke.

“You found him.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Lily…”

She shook her head.

“No.””

The fear in her eyes stopped him.

“No, you don’t understand.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Lily looked around the room.

Then whispered:

“He knows you found us.””

Daniel’s blood turned cold.

“Who?””

Lily held Noah tighter.

“The person who destroyed our family.””

The lights suddenly went out.

The archive room fell into darkness.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Actually, Daniel…”

A figure stepped into the emergency light.

“It was you who destroyed it.””

Daniel stared.

Because the voice belonged to someone he knew.

Someone he trusted.

May you like

Someone who had been standing beside him all along.

Alexander Cross.
