Chapter 7: The Brother’s Final Move
The emergency lights painted the archive room in a dim red glow.
Daniel stood frozen.
Alexander Cross stood in the doorway.
The same brother who had shared his childhood.
The same brother who had comforted him after Lily disappeared.
The same brother who had spent years telling him to move on.
Now he stood there with an expression Daniel had never seen before.
Not regret.
Not guilt.
Confidence.
Lily moved immediately.
She pulled Noah behind her.
Daniel noticed.
She wasn’t afraid of Alexander finding her.
She was afraid of what he would do next.
“Alexander,” Daniel said quietly.
His brother smiled.
“You always were good at finding things.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew she was alive.””
Alexander tilted his head.
“Yes.””
The answer was so simple that it hurt more.
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“For fourteen years?””
Alexander didn’t respond.
Daniel’s voice rose.
“For fourteen years, you let me believe my daughter abandoned me?””
Lily closed her eyes.
“I tried to come back.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Alexander answered before she could.
“Because she knew what would happen.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“Stop answering for her.””
For the first time, Alexander’s calm expression cracked.
“You still don’t understand.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“I don’t.””
He pointed toward Noah.
“My grandson was thrown into a pool today because he was alone.””
Alexander looked at Noah.
“He survived.””
Daniel stared at him.
That sentence told him everything.
“You don’t care.””
Alexander sighed.
“I care about the bigger picture.””
Lily laughed bitterly.
“The bigger picture.””
She stepped forward.
“That’s what you always called it.””
Alexander looked at her.
“You were young. Emotional.””
“I was protecting my son.””
“You were destroying this family.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
Alexander looked at him.
“You want the truth?””
Daniel didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.””
Alexander walked slowly into the room.
“Your father built Cross Industries on one belief.””
He looked around.
“Legacy.””
Daniel frowned.
“My father is dead.””
“But his decisions are still alive.””
Alexander stopped.
“Your father created a system. A powerful one. And when Lily discovered what was happening inside the company, she threatened everything.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“What did you find?””
Lily looked down.
“Financial records.””
Daniel waited.
“Illegal transfers. Hidden accounts. Deals that hurt innocent people.””
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“She didn’t understand business.””
“No,” Lily replied.
“I understood exactly what I saw.””
Daniel looked at his brother.
“Did you know?””
Silence.
That was enough.
Daniel felt betrayed in a way he had never experienced.
“You helped him.””
Alexander looked away.
“I protected the company.””
“You protected yourself.””
Alexander stepped closer.
“Do you know what happens when an empire collapses?””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“People rebuild.””
Alexander shook his head.
“No. People lose everything.””
He looked at Noah.
“Employees. Families. Thousands of lives.””
Lily interrupted.
“Don’t pretend this was about helping people.””
Alexander’s eyes narrowed.
“You disappeared because you were selfish.””
Lily stared at him.
“I disappeared because you threatened my child.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Alexander.
“What?””
Alexander didn’t answer.
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“What did she mean?””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“After I found the records, Alexander came to me.””
She looked at Noah.
“He told me if I exposed the truth, Noah would never be safe.””
Daniel felt anger rising.
“You threatened an infant?””
Alexander shook his head.
“I warned her.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You forced my daughter to run.””
Alexander looked directly at him.
“And you let it happen.””
The words hit harder than Daniel expected.
“What?””
Alexander smiled sadly.
“Think about it, Daniel.””
He pointed at him.
“You were so focused on building the perfect company. You were never there when Lily needed you.””
Daniel went silent.
Because part of him knew there was truth in that.
But Alexander continued.
“I didn’t create the distance between you and Lily.””
He walked toward the door.
“I only used what already existed.””
Lily looked at Daniel.
“Dad…”
Daniel looked torn.
For fourteen years, he had blamed himself.
But now he had to face something worse.
Someone had used his mistakes.
Someone had turned his family against him.
Alexander reached the doorway.
“You should ask Lily why she never told you the whole story.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What story?””
Alexander smiled.
“The reason she disappeared.””

Then he walked away.
Leaving behind a question that terrified Daniel more than any lie.
