Chapter 5: The Letter From The Past

The storm arrived before sunset.

Rain hit the academy windows while Daniel sat alone in his office, reading every document connected to Lily.

Every hidden file.

Every missing piece.

Every lie.

Noah sat quietly on the couch nearby.

For the first time in his life, he was surrounded by people who wanted answers as badly as he did.

But he still felt alone.

Daniel noticed.

“You should rest.””

Noah shook his head.

“I’m okay.””

“You almost drowned today.””

Noah looked down.

“I didn’t want them to know I was scared.””

Daniel stopped.

Because he understood that sentence too well.

For years, he had done the same thing.

Hidden pain behind success.

Pretended losing Lily didn’t destroy him.

“You don’t have to pretend with me,” Daniel said.

Noah looked up.

“Why?””

Daniel hesitated.

Because the real answer was too painful.

Because every time he looked at Noah, he saw Lily.

“Because I know what it feels like to lose someone.””

Noah studied him.

“You lost my mom?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Yes.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then Noah asked:

“Do you hate her?””

Daniel looked shocked.

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you find her?””

The question was simple.

But it hurt more than any accusation.

Daniel looked away.

“I tried.””

Noah nodded.

“My mom said you probably did.””

Daniel looked back.

“She said that?””

“Yes.””

A small smile appeared on Noah’s face.

“She said you were stubborn.””

Daniel almost smiled.

“That sounds like her.””

For a moment, the billionaire chairman wasn’t a billionaire.

He was just a father who missed his daughter.

Then the office phone rang.

Daniel answered.

“Cross.””

His security director spoke urgently.

“Sir, we found something.””

“What?””

“The person who accessed Noah’s scholarship records.””

Daniel stood.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your brother’s assistant.””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“Send me everything.””

A few seconds later, a file appeared on his computer.

Payment records.

Messages.

Travel information.

Daniel opened the first document.

His face changed.

The records showed monthly payments made to someone named Clara Miller.

Noah’s mother.

Daniel whispered:

“She wasn’t hiding from me.””

Noah walked closer.

“What?””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Someone was paying her to stay away.””

Noah’s eyes widened.

“Who?””

Daniel scrolled down.

The answer was hidden beneath several accounts.

But one name appeared repeatedly.

Alexander Cross.

Daniel closed his eyes.

His own brother.

The person who hugged him while he cried over Lily.

The person who promised to help.

The person who secretly controlled her life.

A knock came at the door.

The principal entered carefully.

“Mr. Cross, there is something else.””

Daniel looked up.

“What now?””

The principal placed an old envelope on the desk.

“This was found in the academy archive.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would it be there?””

The principal looked nervous.

“Because it was addressed to you.””

Daniel picked it up.

The handwriting was familiar.

Lily.

His fingers trembled.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter dated fourteen years earlier.

The first line made his breath stop.

*Dad, if you receive this, it means I failed to protect Noah from them.*

Daniel looked at Noah.

The boy’s face turned pale.

“From who?””

Daniel kept reading.

*They told me you would never believe me. They told me the Cross name mattered more than my life.*

His hands shook.

Then he reached the final paragraph.

*There is someone inside our family who will do anything to protect the company. Even if it means destroying his own blood.*

Daniel slowly lowered the letter.

Noah whispered:

“Is my mom okay?””

Daniel looked at him.

He wanted to say yes.

He wanted to promise everything would be fine.

But he couldn’t lie.

Because the letter contained one final sentence.

A sentence Lily had written fourteen years ago.

*If anything happens to me, do not trust the person who brings you this letter.*

Daniel looked toward the doorway.

The principal was gone.

The hallway was empty.

But on the floor outside his office…

Was a fresh envelope.

Delivered minutes ago.

May you like

And on the front was written:

*For Daniel Cross. From Lily.*
