Chapter 5: The Father’s Hidden Deal

The first thing I noticed was my father’s expression.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

And I had spent my entire life believing Richard Vale was incapable of being afraid.

The lawyer handed him the phone.

My father read the message once.

Then again.

His fingers tightened around the device.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He finally looked at me.

That was when I knew.

Whatever was written there involved me.

The lawyer cleared his throat.

“The files contain documents from eighteen years ago.””

Nathan leaned against the wall.

His confidence returned.

“Tell her.””

My father’s eyes turned cold.

“Be quiet.””

Nathan smiled.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“For years, you thought I was the monster in this story.””

His gaze shifted toward my father.

“But you never asked why your father was so desperate to keep you away from the truth.””

I looked at Richard.

“Explain.””

My father remained silent.

And that silence hurt more than any confession.

Amelia stepped closer.

“Evelyn, there’s something you need to understand.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Nathan didn’t meet you by chance.””

The room became still.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What are you saying?””

Amelia looked at Nathan.

“He knew who you were before you knew who he was.””

My blood went cold.

Nathan smiled.

“I told you.””

My father stepped forward.

“That is enough.””

“No,” I said.

My voice surprised everyone.

“No more secrets.””

I looked at him.

“Not from you.””

My father closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked older than I had ever seen him.

Then he spoke.

“When you were twenty-two, there was an investment dispute between Vale Holdings and Ashford International.””

I frowned.

“That was before I knew Nathan.””

“Yes.””

My father swallowed.

“At the time, I thought it was a business conflict.””

“And?””

He looked at Nathan.

“It wasn’t.””

Nathan’s smile disappeared slightly.

My father continued.

“I discovered Nathan’s father had been using illegal financial networks for years.””

The lawyer nodded.

“That matches our findings.””

“But before I could expose them, someone leaked information about my investigation.””

My father looked at me.

“I never found out who.””

Nathan laughed softly.

“I did.””

Everyone turned.

Nathan pushed away from the wall.

“Your father always thought he was the smartest man in every room.””

My father stared at him.

“What did you do?””

Nathan smiled.

“I found out his weakness.””

My stomach tightened.

“What weakness?””

Nathan looked at me.

“You.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“He learned about you,” Nathan said.

“He learned your father’s daughter was the one person he would do anything to protect.””

My father’s face hardened.

“You were twenty-two.””

“I was.””

Nathan nodded.

“And I realized something.””

He looked at me.

“If I couldn’t beat Richard Vale…”

A pause.

“I would become family.””

The words made me sick.

My father moved toward him.

“You married her for revenge.””

Nathan smiled.

“At first.””

My heart broke at those two words.

At first.

Then what?

Nathan looked at me.

“But then something unexpected happened.””

Nobody spoke.

“You started trusting me.””

I looked away.

“You loved the version of me you created.””

Nathan’s expression changed.

For one brief moment, something almost human appeared.

Then it disappeared.

“You were supposed to be a weakness.””

He looked down.

“But you became a problem.””

My eyes narrowed.

“A problem?””

“You were too curious.””

He laughed quietly.

“You asked questions. You noticed things. You kept records.””

The room became silent.

Because he knew.

He knew everything.

My father looked at me.

“You were collecting evidence.””

“Yes.””

Nathan nodded.

“And that’s why I punished you.””

The word made everyone uncomfortable.

Punished.

Like hurting me was some reasonable response.

“You weren’t trying to make me obey,” I said.

Nathan looked at me.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I was trying to scare you into becoming the woman I needed.””

Amelia’s expression darkened.

“And you failed.””

Nathan ignored her.

Because he was looking only at me.

“You were never weak.””

For a second, I almost felt something.

Almost.

Then he continued.

“And that’s what made you dangerous.””

The lawyer’s phone rang.

He answered quickly.

Then his face changed.

“Mr. Vale…”

My father turned.

“What now?””

The lawyer looked at me.

“The files weren’t leaked by Nathan.””

Everyone froze.

Nathan’s smile vanished.

“Then who?””

The lawyer slowly lowered the phone.

“The person who released them attached a message.””

My father stepped forward.

“What message?””

The lawyer looked directly at me.

“It says…”

He hesitated.

Then read the words.

“Evelyn, if you want the full truth, come alone.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who sent it?””

The lawyer looked at the screen.

Then whispered:

“The sender name is Amelia Ashford.””

Everyone turned.

May you like

To the woman standing beside me.

But Amelia looked just as shocked as I was.
