Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

Henry Ashford’s letter changed everything.

Again.

I was beginning to hate those words.

Everything changed.

Every time I thought I had reached the truth, another secret appeared.

Another hidden piece.

Another person who had lied.

I sat at the library table, staring at the letter.

Nathan stood across from me.

His father’s handwriting.

His family’s secret.

His entire world collapsing.

“What does it mean?”” he asked.

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Amelia stepped closer.

“Henry was many things.””

Nathan gave a bitter laugh.

“That’s one way to describe him.””

“But he was not stupid,” Amelia continued.

She pointed at the letter.

“If he wrote this, he knew someone would find it.””

My father looked troubled.

“Why would he say I was not the enemy?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer terrified us.

Nathan walked toward the window.

“My father hated Richard.””

My father nodded.

“He did.””

“Then why defend him?””

Amelia looked at Nathan.

“Because Henry discovered something before he died.””

Nathan turned.

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“He discovered Victor was planning to remove everyone who could expose him.””

Nathan froze.

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother.””

Then my father.

“Richard.””

Then Nathan.

“And eventually you.””

Nathan stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does,” I said quietly.

Everyone looked at me.

I held the letter.

“Victor didn’t want power from one family.””

I looked around the room.

“He wanted power because everyone else was too busy fighting.””

Silence.

The realization settled.

Victor had created enemies.

He had created suspicion.

He had created a war between families.

And while everyone blamed each other…

He controlled everything.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A voice spoke.

An older voice.

A familiar voice.

“Evelyn.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized it.

“Henry Ashford?””

Nathan stepped closer.

“How?””

The voice continued.

“I don’t have much time.””

I looked at everyone.

“You’re alive?””

A pause.

“No.””

The room went silent.

“I recorded this message before my death.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“Because your mother asked me to.””

I looked at Amelia.

She covered her mouth.

Henry’s voice continued.

“She knew Victor would win if we fought each other.””

My father closed his eyes.

“Your mother was always smarter than us.””

The recording continued.

“Evelyn, if you are hearing this, then Nathan is probably standing near you.””

I looked at him.

He looked away.

“Do not judge him only by his father’s sins.””

Nathan went still.

I continued listening.

“Henry Ashford destroyed many lives. But Nathan was not the person who ordered your mother’s death.””

Nathan’s eyes closed.

For the first time, I saw pain.

Real pain.

The recording continued.

“The person responsible is someone who knew both families.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Someone who had access to every secret.””

A pause.

Then the final words:

“Someone who raised Evelyn after her mother died.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

Because there was only one person that could mean.

My father.

Nathan looked at him.

Amelia looked at him.

I looked at him.

My father stepped back.

“No.””

But his voice sounded like someone trying to convince himself.

“You don’t understand.””

I stared.

“Then explain.””

He said nothing.

That was the worst answer.

Nathan’s face hardened.

“Richard.””

My father looked at him.

“I didn’t kill her.””

“Then why does Henry think you did?””

My father shook his head.

“Because I was there.””

The room froze.

“I was there when she died.””

My chest tightened.

“And?””

He looked at me.

“I saw who did it.””

The words barely came out.

“Who?””

My father’s eyes filled with tears.

“I saw the person who pushed your mother into danger.””

I whispered:

“Who?””

He looked toward the door.

Everyone followed his gaze.

A figure stood there.

Someone who should not have been able to enter.

Someone who had been missing for years.

Someone who knew every secret.

Amelia whispered:

“No…”

The person stepped into the light.

And I finally understood.

The biggest lie was not that someone had betrayed my mother.

The biggest lie was that my mother was the only victim.
