Chapter 4: The Wife Who Never Died
Amelia Ashford stood in the doorway of Blackthorn Manor like a memory Nathan had spent years trying to erase.
Nobody spoke.
Not my father.
Not the lawyers.
Not even Nathan.
The woman who had supposedly abandoned him stood alive and breathing in front of us.
She looked nothing like the missing wife from the old photographs I had secretly found during my investigation. Those pictures showed a young woman with bright eyes and a confident smile.
The woman standing before me had those same eyes.
But they carried years of pain.
Nathan took one step backward.
“No.””
Amelia looked at him.
That single word held more fear than any scream could have.
“You always did that,” she said quietly.
Nathan’s face tightened.
“Did what?””
“Pretended reality would disappear if you refused to look at it.””
The room became silent.
I watched Nathan carefully.
This was the first time I had seen him lose control completely.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Panic.
My father approached Amelia slowly.
“You’re certain?””
She nodded.
“Yes, Richard.””
Her voice was calm.
“I’m certain.””
Nathan looked between them.
“You knew?””
My father did not answer.
Nathan’s eyes widened.
“You knew she was alive?””
The question hung in the air.
I turned toward my father.
“Dad?””
His expression changed.
And I realized something painful.
Everyone in this room knew pieces of the truth.
Everyone except me.
My father looked at me.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“By keeping me in the dark?””
His silence was enough.
Amelia stepped forward.
“Evelyn deserves the truth.””
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“Of course she does.””
He looked at Amelia.
“You always thought you were the hero.””
Amelia’s expression hardened.
“No.””
She walked closer.
“I thought I was the only person who could stop you.””
Nathan clenched his fists.
“You disappeared.””
“Yes.””
Her answer surprised everyone.
“I left.””
Nathan smiled.
“There. You see? She admits it.””
Amelia looked at him.
“I left because I knew you would kill me if I stayed.””
The room froze.
My stomach dropped.
Nathan immediately shook his head.
“That’s insane.””
Amelia ignored him.
“You were already moving money. You were already threatening people. You were already using fear to control everyone around you.””
She looked at me.
“Sound familiar?””
I lowered my eyes.
Because it did.
Every word.
Every pattern.
Every excuse.
Nathan had not changed.
He had simply found a new person to control.
“Why didn’t you go to the police?”” I asked.
Amelia looked down.
“Because Nathan owned the police.””
Nathan scoffed.
“Ridiculous.””
She turned toward him.
“You remember Officer Daniel?””
Nathan’s expression shifted.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Amelia saw it too.
“He helped me collect evidence,” she said.
“Two days later, he was transferred.””
The lawyer beside my father quickly wrote something down.
Amelia continued.
“I realized I was fighting someone who had spent years building a wall around himself.””
She looked at Nathan.
“So I disappeared behind my own wall.””
I studied her face.
“You let everyone believe you were dead?””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“I let Nathan believe I was gone.””
A chill moved through me.
Because suddenly I understood.
Nathan did not just hide crimes.
He buried people.
My phone vibrated.
I looked down.
A message from an unknown number.
*YOU ARE IN DANGER. DO NOT TRUST YOUR FATHER.*
My breath stopped.
I looked around the room.
Everyone was watching Nathan.
Nobody noticed my phone.
I quickly locked the screen.
“Evelyn?””
My father’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“Are you okay?””
I forced a nod.
“Fine.””
But I wasn’t.
Because one question was burning in my mind.
Who sent that message?
And why did they warn me about my father?
Nathan suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
“You all think this is over.””
Amelia stared at him.
“It is.””
“No.””
Nathan looked directly at me.
“This is only the beginning.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What does that mean?””
He smiled faintly.
“The truth about me isn’t the only truth you don’t know.””
My father stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Nathan ignored him.
“He never told you why he let you marry me.””
I looked at my father.
Again.
That hesitation.
That tiny crack.
Nathan noticed it.
And smiled.
“Ask him.””
The room went quiet.
“Ask your father why he needed you inside my house.””
I stared at Richard Vale.
The man who had taught me to survive.
The man who had told me to hide my strength.
The man who had spent years protecting me.
“Dad?””
He looked away.
And that scared me more than anything Nathan had said.
Because my father had never looked away from anything.
Not once.
Then Amelia spoke softly.
“Evelyn…”
I turned.
She looked at my father.
“You should know what happened before you married Nathan.””
My heart sank.
“What happened?””
Amelia opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, every phone in the room suddenly received the same notification.
The lawyer checked his screen.
Then his face changed.
“What is it?”” my father asked.
The lawyer slowly looked up.
“Someone just released confidential Ashford family files.””
Nathan smiled.
And this time…
May you like
He was not afraid.
Because whoever released those files had just changed the entire game.
