Chapter 12: The Price of the Truth

The gun never shook in Victor’s hand.

That was the most terrifying part.

People who were afraid made mistakes.

Victor was not afraid.

He had planned this.

Every step.

Every secret.

Every betrayal.

My father slowly raised his hands.

“Victor.””

Victor smiled.

“Yes, Richard?””

“You don’t have to do this.””

A quiet laugh escaped him.

“Don’t I?””

The room felt frozen.

Nathan stood beside me.

For once, he was not trying to control the situation.

He was trying to survive it.

Victor looked at him.

“You disappoint me.””

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“I spent years building a system. Your father was useful. Your wife was useful.””

His gaze moved to me.

“But you?””

He shook his head.

“You became emotional.””

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“You used my family.””

Victor laughed.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Your family used each other.””

That sentence hit harder because everyone knew there was truth inside it.

Victor looked at me.

“Your mother was the only person who understood the game.””

I held my mother’s letter tightly.

“You killed her.””

His expression did not change.

“I didn’t.””

The answer was too quick.

Too practiced.

“I didn’t have to.””

My stomach turned.

“What does that mean?””

Victor smiled.

“It means people like your mother always destroy themselves.””

Nathan stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Victor looked surprised.

“Protecting her now?””

Nathan’s voice was cold.

“You’re the reason everything happened.””

Victor tilted his head.

“And you’re the reason Evelyn suffered.””

Nathan went silent.

Because it was true.

Victor looked at me.

“He married you because of your father.””

I looked at Nathan.

“And you knew.””

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.””

Victor continued.

“He stayed because he became obsessed with winning.””

Nathan looked away.

“But he failed.””

I stared at Nathan.

“You hurt me because of him.””

Nathan’s voice was quiet.

“Yes.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

“I’m sorry.””

The words sounded strange coming from him.

A man who had never apologized.

A man who had believed apologies were weakness.

I looked at Victor.

“And you?””

He smiled.

“I created the conditions.””

My father’s expression changed.

“You manipulated everything.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because power belongs to whoever controls the truth.””

He stepped closer.

“And your family had too much of it.””

Suddenly, Nathan moved.

Everything happened in seconds.

He grabbed Victor’s arm.

The gun fired.

The sound exploded through the room.

My father pulled me down.

Glass shattered.

Everyone screamed.

When I looked up, Nathan and Victor were fighting near the window.

The gun slid across the floor.

Victor hit Nathan hard.

“You really are pathetic.””

Nathan pushed himself up.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“For once…”

A pause.

“I’m doing something right.””

Victor charged.

My father reached the gun first.

He aimed.

But he froze.

I saw it.

The hesitation.

Because my father had spent his entire life believing he controlled every outcome.

And now he had to choose.

Victor noticed.

“You can’t do it, Richard.””

My father stared.

Victor smiled.

“Because you’re not a killer.””

Then I remembered something.

My mother’s letter.

The final line.

I pulled it out.

There was writing beneath the original message.

A hidden note.

One sentence.

*Evelyn, if you find yourself choosing between revenge and justice, choose the person you want to become.*

I stood.

Everyone looked at me.

Including Victor.

“You’re finished.””

He laughed.

“Am I?””

I held up the letter.

“My mother knew you.””

His smile faded.

“She knew exactly who you were.””

Victor’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“She recorded everything.””

Silence.

Nathan looked at me.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

I looked at Victor.

“And he knows it.””

Victor’s expression finally cracked.

Because he did know.

The police sirens sounded outside.

Victor turned toward the window.

Then back to me.

“How?””

I smiled faintly.

“While everyone was fighting…”

I looked at Nathan.

“I made one call.””

Nathan stared.

I continued.

“To someone who never believed your lies.””

The doors burst open.

Law enforcement rushed inside.

Victor was finally surrounded.

But before they took him away, he looked at me.

“This isn’t over.””

I held his gaze.

“Yes.””

I looked around the room.

“At least this part is.””

As Victor disappeared down the hallway, Nathan remained standing.

Broken.

Silent.

Then my phone vibrated.

One final message appeared.

Not from Victor.

Not from Amelia.

From an unknown number.

*You stopped the wrong enemy. Your mother’s real killer is still alive.*

I stared at the screen.

And slowly looked toward the doorway.

Because standing there…

Was the one person nobody had questioned.

May you like

The one person who had been protecting every secret.

My father.
