Chapter 3: The Secret Nathan Buried

For four years, I believed Nathan Ashford’s greatest secret was money.

I was wrong.

The document in my father’s hand changed everything.

I stared at the name printed across the page.

Amelia Ashford.

Nathan’s first wife.

A woman I had never heard of.

A woman who supposedly did not exist.

My stomach tightened.

Nathan noticed.

And for the first time since the night began, he looked genuinely terrified.

“Put that away,” he said.

My father slowly looked at him.

“Interesting.””

Nathan’s voice became sharper.

“Richard, this has nothing to do with you.””

My father folded the document.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It has everything to do with my daughter.””

I looked at Nathan.

“Who is Amelia?””

Silence.

That silence told me more than any answer could.

Nathan had always been good at controlling conversations.

He filled empty spaces with lies.

With anger.

With confidence.

But now he had nothing.

“She was irrelevant,” Nathan finally said.

My hands curled.

“Irrelevant?””

He looked away.

“She was part of my past.””

I stepped closer.

“You told me you had never been married.””

His jaw tightened.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You erased a person.””

Celeste looked confused.

“Who is Amelia?””

Nathan snapped.

“Stay out of this.””

That was when I understood.

Celeste knew less than I thought.

She had not been his partner.

She had been another person trapped inside his lies.

My father handed the document to his lawyer.

“Explain.””

The lawyer opened the file.

“Amelia Ashford disappeared seven years ago.””

The room became silent.

Nathan’s face went pale.

“She left.””

The lawyer looked at him.

“According to you.””

I looked at Nathan.

“According to you?””

The lawyer continued.

“Mr. Ashford reported that his wife abandoned him. However, we found financial transfers made from accounts connected to Mr. Ashford shortly before her disappearance.””

Nathan shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.””

The lawyer placed another document on the table.

“And we found evidence that Mrs. Ashford had discovered the same financial crimes Ms. Vale and Mr. Ashford committed.””

My heart stopped.

The same crimes.

Amelia had found them first.

Nathan looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

I stared at him.

“Then explain.””

He said nothing.

Because there was nothing left to explain.

The man who had spent years telling everyone he was untouchable was finally trapped by his own silence.

My father came closer.

“Evelyn, we need to know everything you found.””

I looked at him.

“I have copies.””

Nathan laughed suddenly.

A strange, broken sound.

“You planned this from the beginning.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at the evidence around the room.

“I planned to leave.””

That surprised him.

“You were going to leave?””

“Yes.””

My voice softened.

“Before I knew what you were.””

Nathan stared.

I continued.

“I thought you were cruel because you were insecure.””

I looked at Celeste.

“I thought you were selfish because you were afraid.””

Then I looked back at him.

“But you weren’t afraid.””

I stepped closer.

“You were empty.””

Nathan’s face hardened.

The old Nathan returned for a second.

The man who believed fear was power.

“You think this ends with me losing my company?””

He smiled.

“You think your father wins?””

My father watched him carefully.

Nathan leaned closer.

“You still don’t know everything.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Nathan smiled.

Not confidently.

Desperately.

“There is a reason your father warned you about me.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Nathan.””

But Nathan continued.

“Ask him why he really wanted you away from me.””

I looked at my father.

And for the first time that night…

I saw hesitation.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

“Dad?””

He did not answer.

Nathan laughed.

“There it is.””

My heart began beating faster.

“What are you hiding?””

My father looked down.

The entire room waited.

Then he finally spoke.

“Evelyn…”

His voice was quieter than before.

“Your marriage to Nathan was not the first time our families crossed paths.””

I felt the room disappear.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked at Nathan.

Then back at me.

“It means Nathan did not choose you by accident.””

A phone rang.

Everyone turned.

The lawyer picked it up.

He listened.

Then his face changed.

“Mr. Vale…”

My father stepped forward.

“What?””

The lawyer lowered the phone.

“We found Amelia Ashford.””

Nobody moved.

Nathan stopped breathing.

My father looked at me.

And the lawyer finished the sentence.

“She has been alive this entire time.””

Nathan whispered one word.

“No.””

Then the front hallway lights flickered.

A woman’s voice came from the doorway.

“Hello, Nathan.””

Everyone turned.

May you like

And the woman standing there looked exactly like the ghost Nathan had buried.

Amelia Ashford was alive.
