Chapter 10: The Truth Nathan Feared

Nathan did not speak.

That was what terrified me most.

For years, I had learned the language of his anger. I knew the signs before he exploded. The tightened jaw.

The cold smile. The quiet threats disguised as jokes.

But this was different.

This was fear.

Real fear.

I looked at him.

“Nathan.””

He swallowed.

“Evelyn…”

I almost stepped back.

Because my entire life, that name had sounded different when he said it.

Sometimes affectionate.

Sometimes controlling.

Sometimes like a warning.

Now it sounded like a confession waiting to happen.

My father stared at him.

“Tell her.””

Nathan looked at Richard.

“You don’t get to ask me for honesty.””

My father’s face hardened.

“After everything you did?””

Nathan laughed softly.

“After everything you did?””

The words hit the room like a spark.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

I turned toward my father.

“Dad.””

His face was pale.

And I knew.

There was something he had not told me.

Again.

My whole life had become a collection of missing pieces.

My mother’s death.

Nathan’s obsession.

The marriage.

The secrets.

The lies.

I looked at Nathan.

“You said you knew.””

He nodded slowly.

“I knew your mother was investigating my father.””

“And?””

He looked down.

“I knew she was close to finding the truth.””

My hands curled.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because I was trying to understand what happened.””

I laughed bitterly.

“By marrying me?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

Nathan continued.

“When I first met you, I thought you were part of your father’s plan.””

I frowned.

“What plan?””

He looked at Richard.

“Your father knew the Ashfords were dangerous.””

My father said nothing.

“So he created distance,” Nathan continued.

“He sent you away. Changed your identity in business circles. Made sure nobody knew exactly who you were.””

I stared at my father.

“Why?””

Nathan answered before he could.

“Because he knew someone would use you against him.””

The room went silent.

My father finally spoke.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I turned.

“From who?””

His silence answered.

“From you?””

The pain on his face was immediate.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Nobody moved.

Amelia stepped forward.

“Evelyn, there is something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She took a breath.

“Your mother left evidence before she died.””

My heart stopped.

“Evidence of what?””

“The person who betrayed her.””

My father looked at Amelia sharply.

“You never told me that.””

“Because I didn’t know who to trust.””

She looked around the room.

“I still don’t.””

Victor smiled faintly.

“Smart.””

Everyone turned toward him.

My father’s expression darkened.

“You’re still here?””

Victor shrugged.

“I think everyone deserves the truth.””

“No,” my father said.

“You deserve consequences.””

Victor ignored him.

“Your mother knew the person who betrayed her was someone close.””

He looked at me.

“She left a message.””

“What message?””

Victor reached into his briefcase.

He removed an old envelope.

My breathing stopped.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

My mother’s handwriting.

My father moved forward.

“Where did you get that?””

Victor looked at him.

“She trusted me with it.””

My father froze.

“That’s impossible.””

Victor smiled.

“You’re finally understanding, Richard.””

I took the envelope.

My fingers shook.

My mother’s name was written on the front.

For me.

Not my father.

Not the police.

Me.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

My mother’s words stared back at me.

*Evelyn, if you are reading this, it means I was right about them.*

My throat tightened.

I continued.

*There is someone in our family who will convince you they are protecting you. They are not.*

I stopped.

The room blurred.

My father whispered:

“Evelyn…”

I kept reading.

*The person who loves you most may also be the person who destroys you.*

The paper shook in my hands.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

*Do not trust the man who says he saved you.*

I slowly looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

My father.

Nathan.

Amelia.

Victor.

Then my eyes stopped on one person.

Because only one person in the room had always told me the same story.

May you like

That he saved me.

My father.
