Chapter 11: The Man Who Saved Me
I left the room.
Nobody stopped me.
Not even my father.
Maybe he knew he had no right.
The hallway of Blackthorn Manor stretched endlessly in front of me.
The same house where Nathan had humiliated me.
The same walls that had witnessed years of lies.
But now every memory felt different.
Every conversation.
Every warning.
Every moment I thought I understood.
I didn’t.
I reached the library and closed the door.
For the first time that night, I was alone.
I opened my mother’s letter again.
I read every word.
Every sentence.
Searching for something.
A clue.
A name.
Anything.
But my mother had written carefully.
She knew the letter might be found.
She knew words could become weapons.
A knock came.
I froze.
“Evelyn.””
My father.
I almost didn’t answer.
“Go away.””
Silence.
Then:
“I deserve that.””
I closed my eyes.
That hurt.
Because anger would have been easier.
I opened the door.
My father stood there.
Without his usual confidence.
Without the powerful businessman image.
Just a father who looked broken.
“Tell me the truth.””
He nodded.
“I will.””
“Now.””
He stepped inside.
“When your mother discovered the Ashford crimes, she wanted to expose them.””
I waited.
“She also discovered someone else was involved.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Me.””
My heart stopped.
The word was quiet.
But it destroyed everything.
“You?””
He nodded.
“I was involved.””
I stepped back.
“How?””
“Not in the way you think.””
That was the sentence every liar used.
I laughed.
“You all say that.””
He looked down.
“I made a deal.””
“With who?””
“The Ashfords.””
My anger rose.
“You worked with them?””
“I worked against them.””
I stared.
“Then why hide it?””
“Because the deal required secrecy.””
“What deal?””
He took a breath.
“Your mother had evidence that could destroy powerful people. People who would do anything to stop her.””
“And?””
“I made a deal with Henry Ashford.””
My father’s voice became quieter.
“He would surrender certain information. I would protect his son.””
My blood went cold.
“Nathan.””
“Yes.””
The room felt smaller.
“You protected Nathan?””
“I protected him from being killed.””
I stared.
“And you put me in his path.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I never intended for you to marry him.””
“But I did.””
He looked away.
“I didn’t know he would find out who you were.””
I thought about Nathan’s words.
At first, it was revenge.
Then something changed.
“Did Nathan know the truth before we married?””
My father hesitated.
That was enough.
“How long?””
“Evelyn—”
“How long?””
My father whispered:
“Six months.””
Six months.
Six months of dates.
Six months of promises.
Six months of him pretending.
I felt sick.
“Did he ever love me?””
My father didn’t answer.
And somehow that hurt more.
A voice came from the doorway.
“Yes.””
I turned.
Nathan.
My father immediately stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Nathan ignored him.
He looked at me.
“I did.””
I laughed.
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You used me.””
“Yes.””
“You hurt me.””
His expression changed.
“Yes.””
For once, Nathan didn’t defend himself.
“I was a terrible person.””
The admission shocked me.
“But that doesn’t mean every moment was fake.””
I stared at him.
“I don’t know what to believe.””
“I know.””
He looked exhausted.
“Neither do I anymore.””
My father watched him carefully.
Nathan continued.
“Your mother found something about my father.””
“What?””
Nathan looked toward the window.
“Something that even I didn’t know.””
He swallowed.
“She found out Henry Ashford wasn’t the person who started everything.””
My heart sank.
“Then who?””
Nathan looked at me.
“The person who created the entire network.””
A pause.
“The person who benefited from everyone fighting each other.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
Nathan whispered:
“Victor.””
The door behind him slammed.
We all turned.
Victor stood there.
Holding a gun.
The room went silent.
“Interesting.””
His smile was calm.
“You always were smarter than your father, Nathan.””
My father stepped in front of me.
Victor raised the weapon.
“Don’t.””
For the first time in my life…
I saw my father afraid.
Not for himself.
For me.
Victor looked at me.
“You finally found the truth.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
He smiled.
“Because your mother asked too many questions.””
My blood froze.
May you like
Victor’s finger tightened.
“And now you’re doing the same thing.””
