Chapter 9: The Secret Daniel Buried
I looked at the photograph until my eyes hurt.
Daniel sitting at a desk.
A lawyer beside him.
A pen in his hand.
Signing something.
Something serious.
Something he never told me about.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
“Is this real?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
“Daniel.””
He sat down.
Suddenly, he looked exhausted.
Older.
Like the weight of everything had finally caught up with him.
“Yes.””
My voice shook.
“What did you sign?””
He rubbed his hands together.
“A power of attorney.””
I stared at him.
“For Tiffany?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked ashamed.
“She convinced me it was normal.””
I shook my head.
“Normal?””
“She said married couples do things like that.””
“And you believed her?””
He looked away.
“I wanted to believe her.””
Those words hurt.
Because they were honest.
Daniel hadn’t been forced.
Not completely.
He had wanted the dream Tiffany sold him.
A beautiful wife.
A perfect life.
Money without struggle.
And he had convinced himself the cost didn’t matter.
“What does the power of attorney allow her to do?””
He hesitated.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
“Make financial decisions for me.””
“And?””
“And access certain accounts.””
My stomach tightened.
“Which accounts?””
He looked at me.
“The ones connected to the trust.””
The room went quiet.
“You gave her access to your father’s trust?””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You signed without reading?””
“I trusted her.””
I laughed softly.
The irony was painful.
“You trusted her.””
He flinched.
“Yes.””
“And I trusted you.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“No, Daniel.””
I stood.
“You don’t know.””
He looked up.
“You have no idea what it feels like to watch your own child choose someone else over you.””
His face collapsed.
“I’m sorry.””
Again.
That word.
But this time, it sounded different.
Because he wasn’t asking me to forgive him.
He was admitting he had lost something.
“Where is Tiffany now?””
He looked nervous.
“I don’t know.””
“Daniel.””
“She left after the phone call.””
“Did she know you were coming here?””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
He looked toward the door.
“Because she wanted me to find out something.””
“What?””
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out his phone.
And opened a video.
“I received this an hour ago.””
He pressed play.
Tiffany appeared on screen.
She was sitting in a hotel room.
Her face was angry.
Her voice was calm.
“Daniel, if you’re watching this, it means you finally grew a conscience.””
I felt a chill.
The video continued.
“You were useful because your mother trusted you.””
Daniel looked down.
“She knows.””
Tiffany smiled.
“That’s unfortunate.””
My hands tightened.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“You need to remember our agreement.””
Daniel whispered:
“Stop.””
But the video continued.
“If you don’t finish what we started, I’ll send the documents.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What documents?””
He didn’t answer.
The video ended.
I stared at him.
“What is she threatening you with?””
He looked away.
“Daniel.””
Finally, he whispered:
“Before I met Tiffany, I had a problem.””
“What kind of problem?””
He swallowed.
“Debt.””
I closed my eyes.
“How much?””
“Almost two hundred thousand dollars.””
The number hit me.
“And she paid it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked miserable.
“Because she wanted something in return.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“She wanted me to help her get close to you.””
My heart stopped.
“She chose you because of me?””
“Yes.””
The room felt like it was shrinking.
“From the beginning?””
He nodded.
“I didn’t know at first.””
“When did you find out?””
He covered his face.
“Three months after we started dating.””
“And you stayed?””
His voice broke.
“I thought I could fix it.””
I stared at my son.
The man who had betrayed me.
The child I still wanted to save.
“You didn’t fix it.””
“I know.””
“You joined her.””
“I know.””
Then something unexpected happened.
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in Tiffany’s things.””
I didn’t move.
“What is it?””
He handed it to me.
“I don’t know.””
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a photocopy of an old document.
A document dated six years ago.
The month my husband died.
At the bottom was a name.
A name I recognized.
Thomas Bennett.
But underneath his signature was another signature.
One that made my heart stop.
Because it belonged to someone I never expected.
Tiffany’s father.
May you like
And beside it was a handwritten note:
*“The Bennett family secret must stay hidden forever.””*
