Chapter 12: The Truth Daniel Never Knew

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to tell Richard Carter he was lying.

Because that would have been easier.

A stranger accusing my son?

Easy to reject.

But my own son standing beside me with a guilty expression?

That was harder.

“Don’t listen to him,” Daniel said quickly.

Richard smiled.

“Why?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Because you’re a liar.””

Richard nodded.

“Maybe.””

Then he looked at me.

“But ask yourself something, Margaret.””

I didn’t answer.

“Why did Thomas hide the trust from Daniel?””

The question hit me.

I had never asked that.

I had assumed Thomas simply wanted to protect me.

But maybe there was more.

Richard continued.

“Your husband loved your son.””

Daniel looked away.

“But he was afraid of what Daniel might become.””

“That’s not true,” Daniel whispered.

Richard ignored him.

“Thomas discovered something years ago.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Your son wasn’t just struggling financially.””

Daniel became pale.

“Stop.””

Richard smiled.

“You know exactly what I mean.””

I looked at my son.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence hurt.

Again.

“What did you do?””

Daniel’s voice was barely audible.

“Mom…”

“What did you do?””

He closed his eyes.

“Before Tiffany.””

My stomach sank.

“What?””

“I made mistakes.””

Richard laughed.

“Still calling them mistakes.””

Daniel looked angry.

“Shut up.””

Richard continued.

“Daniel had access to money.””

I stared.

“What money?””

“Company funds.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“No.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Mom, it wasn’t like that.””

“What happened?””

He looked broken.

“I borrowed money.””

“From your father’s company?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He shook his head.

“I thought I could replace it.””

My heart hurt.

“How much?””

He didn’t answer.

“How much, Daniel?””

“Seventy thousand dollars.””

I stepped back.

All the air left my lungs.

“Your father knew?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“He covered it.””

Of course he did.

Thomas protected him.

Even then.

“What happened after?””

Daniel looked down.

“Dad told me I needed to learn responsibility.””

“And?””

“I promised I would.””

Richard interrupted.

“But he didn’t.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“Your mother deserves the truth.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you do it again?””

His silence answered.

I closed my eyes.

Another betrayal.

Another secret.

“How many times?””

“Twice.””

I felt tears fall.

Not because of the money.

Because I realized Thomas had carried this burden alone.

He had known.

He had protected me.

He had protected Daniel.

And he died believing he failed both of us.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel cried.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I looked at him.

“And now?””

He looked at the floor.

“Now I’m terrified.””

Richard stepped closer.

“And Tiffany knew.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She found out about Daniel’s past.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“She used it against me.””

Richard smiled.

“She didn’t just use it.””

“What do you mean?””

“She planned everything around it.””

The room felt colder.

Richard continued.

“Tiffany knew Daniel needed money. She knew he wanted his mother’s approval. She knew exactly how to control him.””

Daniel looked sick.

“She never loved me.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The truth was finally standing in the room.

Not hidden.

Not protected.

Not softened.

Richard picked up the folder.

“But there is one thing you still don’t know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He opened the final page.

“There was another person involved.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Richard placed the document on the table.

At the bottom was a signature.

A name.

A name I recognized instantly.

Because I had seen it many times.

On birthday cards.

On holiday invitations.

On messages to my family.

I stared.

“No.””

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

His face turned white.

Because the signature belonged to someone we both knew.

Someone who had been standing beside us the entire time.

Someone I trusted.

Richard whispered:

“Your husband’s final betrayal wasn’t his.””

May you like

I looked at the name.

And realized the person who helped destroy my family had been hiding in plain sight.
