Chapter 14: The Truth Thomas Left Behind
Tiffany sat in the interrogation room like she was waiting for a meeting.
Not like someone who had been caught.
Like someone who still believed she had control.
When she saw me through the glass, her expression changed.
Not fear.
Annoyance.
That hurt more.
After everything she had done, she was still angry at me.
A detective led us inside.
“Mrs. Bennett, your husband’s case may need to be reopened.””
I looked at Tiffany.
“Why?””
The detective placed a folder on the table.
“Because Mr. Walker provided new information.””
Tiffany crossed her arms.
“He’s lying.””
The detective ignored her.
“Mr. Walker admitted he helped hide financial records connected to your husband’s company.””
I looked at Tiffany.
“And you?””
She looked away.
“I didn’t know everything.””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s your defense?””
She looked at me.
“You think you understand everything?””
“No.””
I leaned forward.
“But I understand enough.””
The detective opened the folder.
“Ms. Carter, we found messages between you, Mr. Walker, and Mr. Bennett.””
Tiffany’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“You hacked my accounts?””
“No.””
The detective placed photographs on the table.
“Mr. Walker provided copies.””
Tiffany stared at them.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
Daniel stood beside me.
“Tiffany.””
She looked at him.
“Don’t.””
Her voice was cold.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“I loved you.””
She smiled sadly.
“No, Daniel.””
She shook her head.
“You loved the person I pretended to be.””
The words were cruel.
But honest.
I watched my son absorb them.
The detective continued.
“Your father was involved too.””
Tiffany’s jaw tightened.
“Leave him out of this.””
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
The detective looked at me.
“Mrs. Bennett, your husband discovered that Richard Carter and James Walker were moving money from the company.””
I swallowed.
“And then?””
“He planned to report them.””
I closed my eyes.
Thomas.
My Thomas.
He wasn’t weak.
He wasn’t afraid.
He was trying to protect us.
“But he died.””
The detective nodded.
“We found evidence suggesting Mr. Carter attempted to pressure him into silence.””
“Pressure?””
The detective looked uncomfortable.
“We are still investigating.””
Tiffany suddenly spoke.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
Everyone looked at her.
She laughed bitterly.
“Thomas wasn’t perfect.””
I felt anger rise.
“Don’t.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You deserve the truth.””
The room went silent.
“Your husband found out about Daniel’s debt.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
“But he also found out something else.””
“What?””
Tiffany stared at Daniel.
“He found out Daniel had signed documents before.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What is she talking about?””
Tiffany smiled.
“Tell her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“Yes, you do.””
His face changed.
And suddenly I knew.
There was another secret.
“Daniel?””
He looked broken.
“I…”
Tiffany leaned back.
“Your son signed a document giving up his inheritance.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel covered his face.
“Dad made me sign it.””
“Why?””
“Because he thought I needed consequences.””
I stared.
My husband had done that?
Daniel continued.
“He said if I couldn’t control myself, I couldn’t control money.””
Tears filled my eyes.
That sounded exactly like Thomas.
Fair.
Hard.
Loving.
“But then why hide it?””
The detective answered.
“Because someone altered the document.””
Everyone became silent.
“Altered?””
“Yes.””
The detective placed another page on the table.
“The original agreement protected the family.””
I looked closer.
“But this copy…”
The detective nodded.
“Was changed to remove protections.””
I looked at Tiffany.
“You changed it.””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The truth was finally visible.
Tiffany had taken every weakness.
Daniel’s debt.
James’s greed.
Richard’s anger.
And my love for my son.
She had turned all of it into a weapon.
But there was still one question.
I looked at the detective.
“How did Thomas die?””
The detective was silent.
Then he said:
“We found something in the old office.””
“What?””
He opened a final envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Thomas’s handwriting.
But this one wasn’t addressed to me.
It was addressed to Daniel.
The detective handed it over.
Daniel opened it.
And after reading the first line, he started crying.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
His voice broke.
“Dad knew.””
“Knew what?””
He handed me the letter.
The first sentence read:
Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I was right about the person who came between us.
I looked down.
May you like
And the next line made my heart stop.
It was never about the money. It was about making my son believe his mother was his enemy.
