Chapter 13: The Betrayal Hidden in Plain Sight
I stared at the signature.
I couldn’t breathe.
The name at the bottom of the document seemed impossible.
My mind rejected it before my heart could even understand it.
“No.””
The word came out as a whisper.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom?””
I pointed at the paper.
“That’s not possible.””
Richard watched me carefully.
“You know the name.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
But my voice betrayed me.
Because I did know.
I had known that handwriting.
That signature.
That person.
For years.
The name belonged to someone who had sat at my dinner table.
Someone who had hugged me after Thomas died.
Someone who had told me I wasn’t alone.
Someone who had cried with me.
James Walker.
My husband’s closest business partner.
My friend.
Daniel picked up the document.
His face changed as he read it.
“James?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped back.
“That can’t be right.””
I looked at Richard.
“You’re lying.””
Richard’s expression remained calm.
“I expected you to say that.””
“James loved Thomas.””
Richard gave a small, humorless laugh.
“People can love someone and still betray them.””
I hated that he was right.
Because I had spent my entire life believing love and betrayal couldn’t exist together.
Now I knew they could.
“What did James do?”” I asked.
Richard leaned against the chair.
“After Thomas discovered the missing money, he confronted both of us.””
“Both?””
Richard nodded.
“James wasn’t innocent.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because he thought he deserved more.””
I looked at the document again.
“What is this?””
“A transfer agreement.””
I frowned.
“Transfer of what?””
Richard looked at me.
“Control.””
The room became silent.
Daniel read the page again.
“He transferred authority?””
“Yes.””
“To who?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Your son.””
Daniel froze.
I looked at him.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“James believed Daniel was easier to manipulate than Thomas.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Richard pointed at the document.
“James helped create the structure that allowed Daniel to access parts of the trust.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“I never knew.””
“I believe you.””
That surprised me.
Richard looked at me.
“Your son was greedy. But he wasn’t the architect.””
I looked at Daniel.
For the first time, I saw something complicated.
Not innocence.
Not guilt.
Something in between.
A man who had made terrible choices but had also been used.
“Where is James now?”” I asked.
Richard looked away.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“He disappeared.””
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
My heart sank.
Yesterday.
Before the wedding.
Before everything exploded.
“He knew.””
Richard nodded.
“He knew Thomas’s protections were about to be uncovered.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom.””
I turned.
“We need to find him.””
I almost laughed.
“You think after everything, we’re suddenly a team?””
His eyes filled with pain.
“No.””
He looked down.
“But I need to fix what I can.””
Those words would have meant everything years ago.
Tonight, they only meant something small.
A beginning.
Not forgiveness.
A beginning.
I picked up my phone.
I called James.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
And again.
Then a message appeared.
Not from James.
From the police.
My stomach tightened.
I opened it.
A report number.
An address.
And one sentence:
*“Mr. James Walker has been located.””*
I showed Daniel.
“Where?””
I clicked the location.
My face went cold.
Because it was the same place where Thomas had spent his final night.
The old office building.
The place everyone told me he had collapsed from a heart attack.
I grabbed my coat.
Daniel stood.
“Mom, I’m coming with you.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to protect me because you feel guilty.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because I should have protected you before.””
For a moment, I saw the little boy who used to run into my arms.
Then I saw the man he became.
And I realized something painful.
Sometimes people don’t become monsters overnight.
Sometimes they get lost one bad decision at a time.
An hour later, Daniel and I arrived at the abandoned office.
The building looked exactly as it had in my memories.
Old.
Dark.
Full of secrets.
The police officer at the entrance looked at me.
“Mrs. Bennett?””
“Yes.””
He hesitated.
“There’s something you should know.””
“What?””
He looked toward the second floor.
“James Walker wasn’t alone when we found him.””
My heart stopped.
“Who was with him?””
The officer’s expression changed.
“Someone who claimed to have evidence about your husband’s death.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
The officer looked at Daniel.
May you like
Then back at me.
“Tiffany Carter.””
