Chapter 10: The Secret Behind My Husband’s Death

I read the sentence three times.

*The Bennett family secret must stay hidden forever.*

The words looked different every time.

At first, I thought they were a threat.

Then I thought they were a warning.

But the longer I stared at them, the more terrified I became.

Because I knew Thomas.

My husband was not a man who hid things without a reason.

He was honest.

Careful.

Kind.

If he kept a secret, it was because he believed revealing it would hurt someone.

I looked at Daniel.

“Where did Tiffany get this?””

He swallowed.

“She kept it hidden.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I found it in a locked box in her apartment.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Why were you searching her things?””

His face showed shame.

“Because after tonight, I realized I didn’t know who I married.””

For the first time, I saw something in Daniel’s eyes that wasn’t fear.

It was regret.

Real regret.

I placed the document on the table.

“Your father signed this?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“But Tiffany’s father signed it too.””

“Yes.””

I stared at the name.

Richard Carter.

Tiffany’s father.

The same man who had stood silently while his daughter insulted me at the wedding.

The same man who expected $2,000 champagne without paying for it.

“What did your father and Richard Carter have to do with each other?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the document again.

There was a section covered by another piece of paper.

A blacked-out portion.

“Did Tiffany know what was underneath this?””

“I think so.””

“Think?””

Daniel looked frustrated.

“She never told me everything.””

I almost laughed.

“You mean she lied to you too?””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

I walked toward the old wooden cabinet near the kitchen.

Inside was a box filled with Thomas’s things.

His watch.

His letters.

His old business records.

Things I couldn’t throw away.

I opened the box and searched through the papers.

Then I found something.

An old photograph.

Thomas standing beside another man.

I held it up.

Daniel looked closer.

“Who is that?””

I stared.

“I don’t know.””

The man stood beside Thomas outside an office building.

They looked friendly.

Like old friends.

But on the back of the photograph was a date.

Twenty years earlier.

And a name written in Thomas’s handwriting.

*“Thomas and Richard — before everything changed.””*

My stomach dropped.

“Richard Carter knew your father.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Tiffany’s father?””

“Yes.””

I grabbed my phone.

I searched through old contacts.

There was one number I hadn’t called in years.

My husband’s former business partner.

I pressed call.

After three rings, a tired voice answered.

“Margaret?””

My breath caught.

“James.””

James Walker had worked with Thomas for fifteen years.

He was one of the few people I trusted after my husband died.

“I need to ask you something.””

His voice became serious.

“What happened?””

“Did Thomas know Richard Carter?””

Silence.

Not a normal pause.

A painful one.

“James?””

“Where did you hear that name?””

I looked at Daniel.

“Just answer me.””

Another silence.

Then James said:

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

“Margaret, there are things Thomas wanted buried.””

“Things about Richard?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

James sighed.

“Because Richard wasn’t just a friend.””

“What was he?””

“He was a partner.””

I gripped the phone.

“My husband had business with Tiffany’s father?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“Thomas asked me not to.””

I felt betrayed.

Everyone knew something except me.

My husband.

My son.

Tiffany.

Even strangers.

Everyone had information.

Except the woman who had spent her entire life trusting them.

“What happened between them?””

James lowered his voice.

“Richard stole from Thomas.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Years ago, they built a company together. Richard started moving money. Hiding accounts.””

“And Thomas found out?””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

“He confronted him.””

“And?””

James became quiet.

“Richard threatened him.””

My grip tightened.

“Threatened him with what?””

“Your family.””

The room went cold.

I looked at Daniel.

My son was watching me.

“What does that mean?””

James sighed.

“Thomas wanted to expose Richard. But Richard knew about Daniel.””

“What about Daniel?””

“He knew Daniel was struggling.””

I closed my eyes.

The debt.

The mistakes.

The vulnerability.

“He used my son.””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“James, tell me the truth.””

“I wish I could.””

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“I need the truth.””

A long pause.

Then James said:

“Thomas didn’t die peacefully, Margaret.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“The official report said it was a heart attack.””

“Yes.””

“But Thomas believed someone was trying to harm him.””

I felt the phone slip slightly in my hand.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because he made me promise.””

“Why?””

James’s voice broke.

“Because he was afraid that if Richard knew he had told you, you would become the next target.””

I looked at the letter.

The trust.

The documents.

The plan.

Everything connected.

“James.””

“Yes?””

“Is Richard Carter still involved?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Margaret, you need to leave your house.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because if Tiffany has her father’s documents…”

My heart raced.

“What?””

James whispered:

“Then Richard Carter may know exactly where you are.””

At that exact moment, the lights in my house went out.

May you like

The room became completely dark.

And from somewhere near the front door, I heard a key turning.
