Chapter 11: The Man Who Came Back From the Past

The sound of the lock turning froze my entire body.

Someone was entering.

Someone had a key.

Daniel stood immediately.

“Mom.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t move.””

The darkness swallowed the room.

I could hear footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Whoever was walking through my house wasn’t afraid.

That scared me more than anything.

Daniel whispered:

“Call the police.””

I reached for my phone.

Then a voice spoke.

“Margaret?””

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized it.

Not from tonight.

Not from years ago.

From somewhere buried deep in my memory.

The lights suddenly came back on.

And standing in my doorway was Richard Carter.

Tiffany’s father.

He looked older than I remembered.

But his eyes were the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

“Hello, Margaret.””

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“You need to leave.””

Richard smiled.

“Look at that.””

He glanced at Daniel.

“The son finally decided to protect his mother.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“What are you doing here?””

Richard ignored him.

He looked at me.

“You found the letter.””

I felt a chill.

“How do you know?””

“Because Thomas always underestimated how stubborn you were.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about my husband.””

Richard smiled.

“Still defending him.””

“You betrayed him.””

His expression changed slightly.

“Careful.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You threatened my family.””

He laughed quietly.

“You have no idea what happened.””

“I know enough.””

Richard looked around my house.

“This place hasn’t changed.””

I stared at him.

“You’ve been here before.””

“Many times.””

My stomach turned.

“When?””

He smiled.

“Before you knew who I was.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at him.

“You really don’t know.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Know what?””

Richard laughed.

“Your father never told you.””

I felt anger rise.

“Stop playing games.””

Richard sighed.

“Your husband was a good man.””

The compliment sounded like an insult.

“He was.””

“Yes.””

Richard looked at the old photographs on the wall.

“But he made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He trusted people.””

I clenched my fists.

“You mean he trusted you.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

“I made choices.””

“You stole from him.””

“I protected myself.””

“You destroyed him.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“Your husband destroyed himself.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Richard looked amused.

“You don’t understand your own family.””

“Leave.””

“You think I’m the villain.””

He smiled.

“But ask your mother why your father never told you the truth.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What truth?””

I hated that question.

Because I didn’t know.

Richard walked closer.

“Thomas created the trust because he knew the truth would eventually come out.””

I stared.

“What truth?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“The money in that trust was never originally Thomas’s.””

The room went silent.

“What are you saying?””

Richard smiled.

“I’m saying your husband built his fortune using something that belonged to someone else.””

I shook my head.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a folder.

And placed it on my table.

Inside was another document.

Another signature.

Another secret.

“This is why Tiffany needed access.””

I opened it.

My eyes scanned the page.

And then I saw a name.

Not Thomas.

Not Richard.

Someone else.

Someone I had never heard of.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

“Mom…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed to the date.

Six years before Thomas died.

“This happened before Dad got sick.””

I looked back at Richard.

“What is this?””

His smile disappeared.

“The reason your husband was terrified.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

Richard leaned closer.

“It means Thomas Bennett wasn’t protecting you from me.””

I stared at him.

“Then who was he protecting me from?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

And said:

May you like

“Your son.””

The room went completely silent.
