Chapter 8: The Son Standing in the Dark

Daniel stood at the bottom of the staircase.

His face was pale.

His expensive wedding suit looked completely different now.

Less like a groom.

More like a man caught in a lie.

I stared at him.

“How did you get inside?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I have a key.””

My heart sank.

Of course he did.

He was my son.

I had given him a key years ago.

For emergencies.

Not for betrayal.

“Why are you here?””

He looked toward the phone in my hand.

“Who were you talking to?””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s your concern?””

“Mom—”

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t get to come into my house after everything that happened and ask me questions.””

His face fell.

“I was worried about you.””

“Were you?””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did you help plan a situation where everyone would think I was unstable?””

He looked away.

That was becoming his answer.

Always silence.

Always avoidance.

“Daniel.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I made mistakes.””

I shook my head.

“You keep calling them mistakes because it makes them easier to live with.””

He looked at me.

“What do you want me to say?””

“The truth.””

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t know how to fix this.””

“Start by telling me why Tiffany knows about my husband’s trust.””

His expression changed.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“You found the letter.””

It wasn’t a question.

I stepped back.

“You knew about the letter?””

He closed his eyes.

“Mom.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Answer me.””

He stayed silent.

And that silence was enough.

I felt tears come to my eyes.

“You knew.””

“I knew there was something.””

“Something?””

He looked desperate.

“Dad never talked about finances with me.””

“But Tiffany did?””

His silence returned.

I nodded slowly.

“I see.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mom, listen.””

“No.””

“I didn’t know she would go this far.””

I stared at him.

“You knew she wanted something.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because she told me she needed security.””

“Security?””

“Yes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you thought taking mine was acceptable?””

“No.””

“Then what did you think would happen?””

He looked down.

“I thought we would talk to you.””

“Talk?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel, you forged papers.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“You used your father’s name.””

“I know.””

“You let her humiliate me.””

His face broke.

“I know.””

For the first time, he sounded genuinely ashamed.

But shame was not the same as innocence.

“Why didn’t you stop her?””

He whispered:

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“Of Tiffany?””

He nodded.

That surprised me.

“What did she have over you?””

His expression changed.

“I can’t tell you.””

I almost smiled.

“Still protecting her?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

He looked toward the window.

Then he said:

“Protecting you.””

I didn’t understand.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, his phone buzzed.

He looked down.

His face went white.

I watched him read the message.

Then he slowly locked the screen.

“Who was it?””

“Nobody.””

“Daniel.””

He didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

“Show me.””

“No.””

That single word told me everything.

I reached out.

He stepped back.

And suddenly I saw something.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

“What is happening?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then quietly said:

“Tiffany knows I’m here.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“Daniel.””

He swallowed.

“She said if I didn’t leave the house immediately, she would send something to the police.””

“What?””

He looked broken.

“She has proof of something I did.””

I stared at him.

“What did you do?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I signed something.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“A document.””

“What document?””

He looked at me.

And his next words changed everything.

“The one that gave Tiffany control if something happened to me.””

I felt cold.

“Control over what?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Everything.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a picture.

Daniel sitting in a lawyer’s office.

Signing documents.

Underneath it were four words:

*“Ask your son why.””*
