Chapter 7: The Secret Behind the Passenger Seat

“Vanessa wasn't in the passenger seat. She was in the driver's seat.””

Charlotte's words hung over the ballroom like a death sentence.

Ethan stood motionless, holding the photograph of the handwritten statement. His wife stared at Charlotte with a mixture of fury and terror, while Daniel Price struggled against the security guard's grip.

“That is a lie!”” Vanessa shouted.

“She has been confused for six years, and now everyone wants to believe whatever she says!””

Charlotte flinched.

I moved closer to her wheelchair.

“Stop shouting at her,” I said.

Vanessa swung toward me.

“You have no idea what happened that night!””

“Then tell us.””

For a second, I thought she might answer.

Instead, she snatched a champagne glass from a passing tray and hurled it against the wall.

The crash sent several guests scrambling backward.

“Do you want the truth?”” she screamed.

“Fine! The truth is that Charlotte destroyed everything I ever wanted!””

Ethan's face hardened.

“What did Charlotte ever take from you?””

Vanessa laughed, but tears ran down her cheeks.

“Everything. Your attention. Your loyalty.

Your sympathy. Even when she disappeared for months, you spent every waking hour looking for her. And when she came back, injured and helpless, you treated her like a saint.””

Charlotte stared at her.

“I never asked him to do that.””

“You never had to!”” Vanessa snapped.

“You only had to exist.””

Ethan stepped between them.

“Enough. Tell me what happened in the car.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You wouldn't understand.””

“Try me.””

She looked around the ballroom, perhaps searching for one friendly face. She found none.

Finally, she turned toward Daniel.

“You told me this would never come out.””

Daniel's expression was cold.

“I told you to stop talking.””

“You said the records were destroyed!””

“Mrs. Caldwell,” he said sharply, “I strongly recommend that you remain silent until your attorney arrives.””

The words sounded professional, but I noticed something else.

Daniel wasn't trying to protect Vanessa anymore.

He was trying to protect himself.

Ethan noticed, too.

“Daniel, what did you do with the original statement?””

“I have no comment.””

“Where is it?””

“I said I have no comment.””

Ethan handed the photograph to Margaret.

“Keep that safe. Don't let anyone take it.””

Then he faced the security guards.

“Make sure neither of them leaves before the police arrive.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You're holding your own wife against her will?””

“No,” Ethan replied.

“I'm making sure the evidence doesn't disappear.””

She stepped closer, lowering her voice.

“Ethan, please. Think about our reputation. Think about the foundation. Think about the people who depend on us.””

“I am thinking about them.””

“Then you'll understand why this cannot become public.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something in him that looked like disgust.

“You're still worried about the headlines.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“I'm worried about our family.””

“Charlotte is our family.””

Vanessa looked away.

That was her answer.

While the guards watched Daniel, Margaret pulled a chair beside Charlotte. I crouched near the wheelchair, listening as Charlotte tried to explain what she remembered.

“I wasn't supposed to be in the car,” she said quietly.

“I had gone to Vanessa's house because she called me. She said Ethan had found something and that we needed to talk before he came home.””

“What did he find?”” I asked.

Charlotte shook her head.

“I don't remember. I only remember Vanessa being angry.””

Ethan knelt in front of her.

“Did I know you were going there?””

“No.””

“Why didn't you tell me afterward?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I thought I had caused the accident. Daniel told me that if I spoke about it, I could be charged with reckless driving. He said you might lose everything if the case went to trial.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I would never have let that happen.””

“I know that now.””

He took her hands.

“I should have protected you.””

Charlotte looked at him sadly.

“You tried. But every time I remembered something, Vanessa told me I was imagining it. Daniel said the doctors would never believe me.””

I felt my throat tighten.

Six years of being told that her own memories were unreliable.

Six years of apologizing for something she hadn't done.

And tonight, when she finally found the courage to confront the woman responsible, that woman had tried to strike her in front of an entire ballroom.

I understood why Charlotte had flinched before Vanessa even touched her.

She had learned to fear what came next.

A police siren sounded outside the hotel.

Vanessa went rigid.

Daniel whispered something under his breath, then looked toward the side entrance.

One of the guards followed his gaze and moved to block the door.

Ethan stood.

“When the officers arrive, I want everyone who witnessed this evening to give a statement. The recording, the hospital records, the messages—everything will be handed over.””

Vanessa looked at him with disbelief.

“You'd destroy me?””

“I won't destroy you, Vanessa. I'll stop protecting you.””

The distinction seemed to frighten her more than any threat.

The ballroom doors opened, and two uniformed officers entered with the hotel security director.

Ethan approached them immediately.

“I'm Ethan Caldwell. We have evidence involving a possible cover-up of a serious vehicle accident six years ago. Several people here may have relevant information.””

The senior officer nodded.

“Who is involved?””

Ethan looked toward his wife.

“Vanessa Caldwell and Daniel Price.””

Vanessa's knees seemed to weaken.

As the officers approached, she suddenly pointed at Charlotte.

“Ask her about the money!””

Everyone turned.

Charlotte stared at her.

“What money?””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“The money you received before you disappeared. The money you used to leave Atlanta. You think you're innocent, but you took it!””

Charlotte shook her head.

“I never received any money.””

“You signed the papers!””

“What papers?””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

For one terrible second, she seemed to realize she had revealed something she hadn't intended to say.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mrs. Caldwell, stop speaking.””

But the officer had already heard her.

“Money for what?”” he asked.

Vanessa's lips parted.

No answer came.

Charlotte looked at Ethan, her face drained of color.

“I never signed anything.””

Ethan turned toward Daniel.

“Then whose signature did she sign?””

Daniel looked down.

And when the officer opened the leather folder to examine the documents, a second envelope slipped out.

Inside was a bank transfer receipt dated six years earlier.

The recipient's name was Charlotte's.

But the account number belonged to someone else.

Someone who had collected nearly two million dollars in her name.

Someone standing in that ballroom.
