Chapter 13: The Murderer Behind the Millionaire

“Your mother was murdered, Ethan. And Vanessa wasn't the person who gave the order.””

For several seconds, Ethan couldn't speak.

Charlotte gripped the arms of her wheelchair, her face drained of color. I stood beside her, listening to the silence on the other end of the phone.

Then Ethan found his voice.

“Who gave the order?””

Daniel Price exhaled.

“Meet me at the old Caldwell boathouse on Lake Lanier at eight tonight. Come alone, and I'll tell you everything.””

“No.””

A pause.

“What?””

“You've lied to me for years. You stole evidence from a witness's home. You want me to meet you somewhere isolated, and you expect me to trust you?””

“Then bring the police. But if I see anyone following you, I'll disappear again.””

The line went dead.

Ethan stared at his phone.

Charlotte spoke first.

“You can't go alone.””

“I won't.””

“Then who are you taking?””

Ethan looked at the detectives waiting outside the room.

“Everyone who needs to hear the truth.””

By six that evening, the police had established a plan. Officers would secure the roads surrounding the boathouse while Ethan approached the meeting location with a concealed recording device. Charlotte would remain at a nearby police facility with me.

Charlotte hated the arrangement.

“I've spent six years waiting for people to tell me what happened,” she argued.

“Now that someone is finally willing to talk, I'm expected to sit in another room?””

The lead detective, a woman named Harris, spoke gently.

“Your testimony is essential, Ms. Charlotte. But if Daniel is telling the truth, the person responsible for Evelyn's death may still be dangerous.””

Charlotte looked at Ethan.

“Please don't let him walk away.””

Ethan took her hand.

“I won't.””

At seven forty-five, he left.

I stayed with Charlotte in the police facility's interview room. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, and a wall clock ticked so loudly that I wanted to tear it down.

Charlotte sat motionless, staring at the closed door.

“Do you think my father will forgive himself?”” she asked suddenly.

I considered the question.

“I don't know.””

“He left me believing I was responsible for the crash. But when he saw me yesterday, he cried as though losing me had broken him.””

“Both things can be true,” I said.

“He can love you and still have hurt you terribly.””

She nodded.

“I wish love made people brave.””

“So do I.””

At eight precisely, Detective Harris received a message.

Ethan had reached the boathouse.

A second message arrived two minutes later.

Daniel was there.

Then nothing.

Five minutes passed.

Ten.

Charlotte began to pace the small space with her hands, rolling the wheels of her chair back and forth.

“Why aren't they saying anything?””

Detective Harris checked her phone.

“The officers are maintaining radio silence unless there's an emergency.””

Charlotte looked at me.

“I can't do this.””

I knelt beside her.

“Yes, you can.””

“What if he never comes back?””

I had no reassuring answer.

So I took her hand and waited with her.

At 8:17 p.m., Detective Harris's phone rang.

She listened without speaking.

Then she stood.

“Everyone remain here.””

Charlotte's face went white.

“What happened?””

Detective Harris ended the call.

“Daniel has arrived. Mr. Caldwell is speaking with him now.””

Charlotte closed her eyes.

“Please let him tell the truth.””

At the boathouse, Ethan stood beneath a single yellow light while Daniel approached carrying a small waterproof case.

“You came,” Daniel said.

“You promised answers.””

Daniel placed the case on a wooden bench.

“Everything is inside. The original recording. The financial documents. Evelyn's letter.””

Ethan didn't touch it.

“Tell me about my mother.””

Daniel looked toward the dark lake.

“Evelyn discovered that your father had been transferring money out of the family trust. Vanessa helped conceal some of those transfers because she believed James would eventually restore the funds.””

“And Charlotte found out?””

“Yes. She intended to tell Evelyn. That was why Vanessa arranged the meeting before the accident.””

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“And my mother?””

“Evelyn confronted the person who had been moving the money. She planned to report the theft, the accident, and the falsified hospital records.””

“Who was that person?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Your father.””

Ethan recoiled.

“My father didn't order her death.””

“No. He didn't.””

“Then who did?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Evelyn died because she discovered that the theft was larger than anyone imagined. Money had been moved through shell companies, charitable grants, and private accounts. Your father was responsible for the original scheme, but someone else had taken control of it.””

Ethan stared at him.

“Who?””

Daniel's expression crumpled.

“Your uncle, Richard Caldwell.””

Ethan went still.

His father's younger brother had died seven years earlier in a supposed boating accident.

Daniel continued.

“Richard was the architect behind the financial scheme. He used James as the public face of the trust while quietly diverting millions. When Evelyn discovered the transfers, she threatened to expose him.””

“But Richard was dead before my mother died.””

“That was the story.””

Ethan felt the air leave his lungs.

Daniel opened the case.

Inside lay a small recorder, a stack of documents, and an envelope bearing Evelyn's handwriting.

“There was never a body recovered from Richard's boat,” Daniel said.

“The death certificate was based on a statement from a single witness.””

Ethan stared at him.

“Who?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Me.””

Before Ethan could respond, a sharp crack split the night.

The light above them shattered.

Daniel dropped to the ground.

Ethan threw himself behind the bench as a second shot struck the wooden wall.

Police sirens erupted along the road.

A dark figure ran from the trees.

Officers shouted for the person to stop.

Ethan crawled toward Daniel.

“Daniel!””

The attorney was clutching his shoulder, blood seeping between his fingers.

Ethan grabbed the waterproof case.

“Stay with me!””

Daniel looked up at him.

“Your uncle,” he gasped.

“He's alive.””

May you like

Then he seized Ethan's wrist.

“And he's already inside your house.””
