Chapter 6: The Call From the Night of the Crash
Nobody moved.
Charlotte held the old phone in both hands, staring at the name on the screen.
Daniel Price.
The man standing ten feet away from her.
The man who claimed he had never interfered with her medical care.
The man whose name appeared on a document he insisted was fraudulent.
Ethan extended his hand.
“May I see it?””
Charlotte hesitated before passing him the phone.
“Please don't erase anything.””
“I won't.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That device may contain privileged information.””
Ethan didn't look at him.
“It's Charlotte's phone.””
“Which may have been compromised.””
“By whom?””
Daniel adjusted his tie.
“Someone who wants to damage this family.””
Vanessa nodded quickly.
“Exactly. Someone has orchestrated this entire evening. The messages, the nurse, the photographs. Don't you see how suspicious it all is?””
Margaret's expression hardened.
“I spent six years wondering why a patient who had survived a serious accident was suddenly treated as though she had no family. I lost my job because I refused to stop asking questions. Do you think I came here for entertainment?””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“You came here for money.””
“No.””
“Everyone has a price.””
Margaret stepped closer.
“Perhaps that's why you find it impossible to believe someone would do the right thing without being paid.””
A murmur rose from the crowd.
Vanessa turned away, her face burning.
Ethan examined the phone.
Its battery was nearly dead, but the call history remained intact. Several entries had dates matching the night of the crash.
He tapped one.
A recording began to play.
Static filled the ballroom speakers.
Then a man's voice emerged.
“Charlotte, listen carefully. You need to stay where you are.””
Charlotte's face drained of color.
She pressed her hands against her ears.
“No. Turn it off.””
Ethan immediately stopped the recording.
“I'm sorry.””
She was breathing rapidly.
I crouched beside her.
“Look at me, Charlotte. You're here. You're safe right now.””
Her eyes found mine.
“It's his voice,” she whispered.
“Whose?””
She looked toward Daniel.
“His.””
Daniel shook his head.
“This proves nothing. Anyone could have recorded my voice.””
Ethan's expression was unreadable.
“Let's hear the rest.””
Charlotte swallowed.
“Please,” she whispered to Ethan.
“I need to know.””
He studied her face for a moment, then nodded.
He pressed play again.
The recording continued.
“Don't call the police. Don't tell Ethan what happened. I'll take care of everything.””
A pause followed.
Then another voice spoke.
A woman's voice.
Vanessa's.
“You said she was unconscious.””
Daniel answered, “She was. I don't know how long she'll remain that way.””
“Then make sure nobody asks questions.””
“I've already spoken to the hospital.””
“And the police?””
“They believe she lost control of the vehicle.””
Vanessa's recorded voice grew sharper.
“She wasn't driving.””
The room erupted.
Several guests gasped. Someone near the stage whispered a prayer.
Ethan went completely still.
Daniel lunged toward the phone.
“Turn that off!””
A security guard caught his arm.
Ethan continued holding the device.
The recording played on.
Vanessa's voice returned, shaking with anger.
“You told me this would be handled. You told me nobody would ever know.””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Then stop talking about it.””
The recording ended with a burst of static.
For a long moment, Ethan stared at the phone.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You knew she wasn't driving.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Ethan, you have to understand—”
“Who was?””
She shook her head.
“Please.””
“Who was driving my car that night?””
Daniel pulled against the security guard.
“This recording was illegally obtained. None of you should be listening to it.””
Ethan turned toward him.
“Are you denying that it's your voice?””
“I am saying it cannot be verified.””
Margaret spoke from beside Charlotte.
“I can verify it.””
Daniel looked at her.
“How?””
“I heard you make that call. I was standing outside Charlotte's room when you told Vanessa that the police had accepted the initial report.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You have no proof of that.””
“I have the nurse's log documenting your visit. I have the original records. And now I have a recording.””
Ethan slipped the phone into his jacket.
“Daniel, you're not leaving.””
“You cannot detain me.””
“I haven't asked anyone to arrest you. But if you leave, I'll assume you have something to hide.””
Daniel gave a cold smile.
“Then assume whatever you like.””
He turned toward the exit.
Two security guards moved into his path.
“Please step aside,” Daniel ordered.
Neither guard moved.
Vanessa suddenly rushed toward Ethan.
“Don't do this. You don't know what you're destroying.””
Ethan looked at her.
“I know what you destroyed.””
For the first time, Vanessa had no answer.
I watched her face change as the truth settled around her. She had spent years commanding rooms with a glance, silencing people with money, and treating every disagreement as a problem that could be buried.
Tonight, the room had stopped obeying her.
And she knew it.
Then Charlotte spoke.
“There's something I haven't told you.””
Ethan immediately turned toward her.
“What is it?””
Charlotte looked down at her hands.
“When I started remembering three months ago, I didn't remember everything at once. I remembered pieces. The rain.
The headlights. Vanessa's bracelet.””
She paused.
“Then I remembered waking up in the hospital.””
Margaret sat on the edge of a nearby chair.
“What did you remember?””
Charlotte's eyes moved toward Daniel.
“He was standing beside my bed. Vanessa was there, too.””
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
“No. You were sedated. You couldn't have known.””
“I heard you arguing.””
Charlotte's voice grew steadier.
“You were telling him that you couldn't keep paying for my silence. You said you wanted me moved somewhere nobody would find me.””
Ethan stared at his wife.
“Moved where?””
Charlotte swallowed.
“I don't know. But Daniel told you that if I ever remembered who was driving, all three of you would go to prison.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“That's enough.””
Charlotte flinched, but continued.
“Then Vanessa said something I'll never forget.””
She looked at Ethan, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“She said, ‘I didn't mean to hit her that hard.’”
Ethan stepped backward as though the floor had shifted beneath him.
Vanessa began shaking her head.
“I didn't mean it like that.””
Charlotte's voice broke.
“Then what did you mean?””
Vanessa opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
Ethan looked at the security guards.
“Call the police. Tell them we have evidence of a possible cover-up involving a serious car accident.””
Daniel's composure finally shattered.
“You have no idea what you're doing!””
“Then explain it to the police.””
As the guards moved toward him, Daniel suddenly turned to Vanessa.
“You promised me the original would never surface.””
Vanessa stared at him in horror.
“Shut up!””
But it was too late.
Ethan heard every word.
He approached his wife slowly.
“What original?””
Vanessa backed away.
Daniel looked as though he wanted to swallow his own words.
Then Margaret opened her leather folder and removed one final document.
“I believe this is what he means.””
She placed it on the table.
It was a photograph of a handwritten statement, dated the morning after Charlotte's accident.
At the bottom was a signature.
Charlotte leaned forward, squinting at the page.
Then she began to cry.
“That's my handwriting.””
Ethan picked up the photograph.
The statement contained just three sentences.
I was driving the car. Vanessa tried to stop me. I lost control when she grabbed the steering wheel.
Beneath it was a second signature.
Daniel Price's.
And beside his name, in neat handwriting, were six words that made Ethan's face turn ashen.
*Statement withdrawn at the family's request.*
Charlotte looked at her husband.
“I wrote that before they told me I couldn't remember.””
Ethan's voice was barely audible.
“Then why did you spend six years believing you were responsible?””
Charlotte stared at the paper.
“Because someone told me I had killed the person sitting beside me.””
She looked up, her face crumpling.
“But Ethan, there was nobody beside me when the car crashed.””
The ballroom fell silent.
May you like
Then Charlotte whispered the words that changed everything.
*“Vanessa wasn't in the passenger seat. She was in the driver's seat.””*
