Chapter 12: The Last Lie of Daniel Price

The detectives moved quickly.

One radioed for nearby units while the other examined the broken window and called for additional officers to secure the property.

Ethan stood on the porch, watching the empty street.

“Daniel was supposed to be in custody,” he said.

The detective beside him shook his head.

“He was being interviewed, not arrested. He was released pending further investigation.””

Ethan turned sharply.

“Who authorized that?””

“The decision was made by the investigating team based on the evidence available at the time.””

“He just stole evidence from a witness's house!””

“We'll deal with that.””

James sat heavily on the porch steps.

His hands were shaking.

“He knows what's in the box,” he whispered.

Charlotte moved toward him, but stopped a few feet away.

“What was in it?””

James looked up at his daughter.

“The recording of the crash.””

Charlotte swallowed.

“You told me it was hidden.””

“It was.””

“Then how did Daniel know where to find it?””

James closed his eyes.

“Because I told him.””

Ethan stared at his father.

“You gave him the location?””

“Eleven years ago, before I disappeared. I thought I could use the recording to protect myself if Vanessa ever tried to expose the money transfers. I kept it as insurance.””

Charlotte's expression hardened.

“So you knew it could prove what happened to me, and you used it to protect yourself.””

James lowered his head.

“Yes.””

She turned away.

I watched her shoulders rise and fall as she tried to control her breathing.

For six years, she had believed she was responsible for a crash she could barely remember. Her father's confession had finally confirmed that Vanessa had caused the accident.

But the same confession revealed that he had possessed the truth all along.

He could have cleared Charlotte's name.

He hadn't.

Ethan stepped toward his father.

“Why didn't you give the recording to the police?””

James rubbed his face.

“Because I was a coward. I convinced myself that if I stayed away, everyone would eventually move on. Then your mother found out I was alive.””

Ethan went still.

“My mother knew where you were?””

James nodded.

“She contacted me shortly before she died. She said she had evidence that Vanessa and Daniel were moving money through the foundation. She wanted me to return and tell the truth.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I was afraid she'd report me, too.””

Ethan stared at him with disbelief.

“You let her die believing her family was beyond saving.””

James began to cry.

“I know.””

The detective approached.

“Mr. Caldwell, we need a full statement. We also need to know exactly what was inside that box.””

James wiped his eyes.

“The original recording, a list of payments, and a letter from Evelyn. She wrote everything down after she discovered the transfers.””

“Where was the letter?””

“In the box.””

Ethan looked at the detective.

“Then Daniel has everything he needs to destroy the case.””

“Not necessarily,” the detective replied.

“We have copies of the financial records and Charlotte's statement. We also have the hospital documents and the recording from last night.””

“But the original recording—”

“Would strengthen the case. We understand that.””

The detective's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds, then looked at his colleague.

“Vehicle matching the description has been spotted heading toward Interstate 85.””

The second detective immediately moved toward the police vehicle.

“We're coordinating with highway patrol.””

Ethan turned toward Charlotte.

“We should get you somewhere safe.””

She shook her head.

“I'm not going anywhere until I know what happened to that recording.””

“Charlotte—”

“No.”” She looked at him steadily.

“I'm not running away again.””

Ethan hesitated, then nodded.

“All right. But you stay with the detectives and Emily. No arguments.””

Despite everything, Charlotte managed a faint smile.

“You sound like my doctor.””

“And your doctor is probably right more often than I am.””

For the first time in hours, she laughed.

It was small and fragile, but it was real.

The detectives arranged for us to return to the hotel under police protection while James remained at the property to provide a formal statement.

Ethan insisted on traveling with us.

During the drive, he barely spoke.

He stared through the window, his hands clasped together, as if he were trying to reconcile the father he remembered with the man he had just met.

Charlotte sat beside me in the back seat.

“Emily,” she whispered, “do you think my father ever loved me?””

I turned toward her.

“Why would you ask that?””

“Because he knew the truth. He could have told me. He could have stopped Vanessa from hurting me.””

I took her hand.

“I think people can love someone and still make terrible choices. That doesn't excuse what they did.””

She looked down.

“I don't know if I can forgive him.””

“You don't have to decide today.””

She nodded slowly.

When we reached the hotel, the lobby had been cleared of reporters. The director had arranged a private room where Charlotte could rest while Ethan spoke with the detectives.

I stayed with her.

An hour later, Richard appeared at the door.

He looked uncomfortable.

“Emily, the hotel director wants to see you.””

I sighed.

“Let me guess. I'm fired.””

Richard shook his head.

“No. Quite the opposite.””

He handed me an envelope.

Inside was a letter confirming that my employment had been restored and that I would receive paid leave for the remainder of the week.

The hotel director had also written an apology for Richard's handling of the previous evening.

I stared at the letter.

“Why now?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“Because the security footage confirms everything you said. It shows Vanessa raising her hand, you stepping in, and her shoving you into the table.””

He paused.

“The director watched the entire recording. He said you did what everyone else should have done.””

I folded the letter carefully.

“Thank you for telling me.””

Richard hesitated.

“Emily, I owe you an apology, too. I was afraid of losing my job, and I asked you to apologize for something you shouldn't have been forced to tolerate.””

I looked at him for a long moment.

“I hope next time you'll remember that before asking someone to kneel.””

He nodded and left.

I slipped the letter into my bag, thinking of my mother and the bills waiting at home.

For the first time all night, I felt as though one part of my life might finally be getting back on track.

Then Ethan entered the room.

His expression told me something had gone wrong.

“The police found Daniel's SUV,” he said.

Charlotte sat upright.

“Where is he?””

“They found the vehicle abandoned near a service station. The metal box was inside, but the recording and Evelyn's letter were missing.””

Charlotte covered her mouth.

Ethan continued.

“They also found a phone beneath the driver's seat. It contained several messages between Daniel and Vanessa.””

“Can they prove she was involved?”” I asked.

“They're working on it.””

He handed Charlotte a printed message.

It had been sent from Vanessa to Daniel three weeks earlier.

If James talks, make sure the original never reaches Ethan. I won't let him take everything from me.

Charlotte read it twice.

Then she looked at Ethan.

“Does this mean she's guilty?””

“It means we have evidence that needs to be investigated.””

She handed the paper back.

“I'm tired of waiting for other people to decide whether my life matters.””

Ethan crouched beside her.

“It matters.””

“Then promise me something.””

“Anything.””

“Don't protect your family from the truth anymore.””

Ethan swallowed.

“I promise.””

At that moment, his phone rang.

The caller's number was blocked.

He answered, putting it on speaker.

A man's voice filled the room.

“Ethan Caldwell?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Daniel Price. You need to listen carefully.””

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“You've got some nerve calling me.””

“I'm calling because Vanessa has gone too far. I can give you everything you need to prove what happened six years ago.””

“Where are you?””

“Not somewhere I can discuss over the phone.””

Ethan looked at the detectives standing outside the door.

“What do you want?””

“A guarantee that I won't be prosecuted.””

Charlotte let out a bitter laugh.

“You want to sell the truth again?””

Daniel ignored her.

“I have the original recording, the financial records, and Evelyn's letter. But there's one thing you need to understand before we meet.””

Ethan's voice turned cold.

“Go on.””

“Your mother didn't die naturally.””

The room fell silent.

Ethan gripped the phone.

“What did you say?””

“Evelyn discovered that Vanessa had been stealing from the foundation. She planned to report everything the next morning. The night before she died, she received a visit from someone she trusted.””

Ethan's face drained of color.

“Who?””

Daniel paused.

May you like

Then he answered.

*“Your mother was murdered, Ethan. And Vanessa wasn't the person who gave the order.””*
