Chapter 5: The Lawyer Who Knew Too Much

“Daniel Price was in your hospital room?””

Ethan repeated Charlotte's words as if saying them aloud might make them less impossible.

Charlotte nodded slowly.

“I didn't remember his face before. But I remember the name. He wore a dark suit and carried a leather briefcase. He kept asking whether I could recognize anyone from the night of the accident.””

Margaret took the document from Ethan and examined the signature.

“This is wrong,” she said.

“Daniel Price wasn't a physician. He had no authority to sign a medical discharge.””

Ethan's fingers tightened around the paper.

“Then why is his name here?””

“I don't know.””

Vanessa, standing between two security guards, suddenly stopped struggling.

“Give me that document.””

Ethan turned toward her.

“Why?””

“Because it contains confidential medical information.””

“About Charlotte?””

“About this family.””

Charlotte let out a bitter laugh.

“You keep saying that as though I'm not part of the family.””

Vanessa looked away.

The small gesture seemed to hurt Charlotte more than any insult could have.

I knelt beside the wheelchair.

“Do you want some water?””

Charlotte shook her head.

“Thank you, Emily. But I need to understand what happened.””

I wanted to tell her that she didn't owe anyone an explanation. I wanted to promise that everything would be fine.

But I had heard too many empty promises that evening.

So I simply stayed beside her.

Ethan turned to one of the security guards.

“Call Daniel. Tell him I need him here immediately.””

Vanessa gave a sharp laugh.

“He won't come.””

“Why not?””

“Because he's smarter than you.””

Ethan stared at his wife.

“Is that a warning?””

“It's a fact.””

He took a breath, then spoke to the guard again.

“Call him.””

The guard stepped away.

Around us, the gala had ceased to resemble a charity event. Guests whispered in tight circles. Several had their phones out, though a few lowered them when Ethan looked in their direction.

Richard approached me, his face pinched with anxiety.

“Emily, please come with me.””

I glanced at Charlotte.

“Why?””

“Because the hotel director is demanding an explanation. You stopped service, caused a scene, and physically restrained a guest.””

“I stopped her from hitting someone.””

“That's not how management is seeing it.””

I looked toward the shattered glasses.

“And what would you have preferred I do? Stand there and watch?””

Richard's shoulders sagged.

“You don't understand the position I'm in.””

“I understand perfectly.””

He lowered his voice.

“Your mother is still receiving treatment, isn't she?””

The question hit me like a slap.

I stared at him.

“Why would you bring her into this?””

“I'm trying to help you. If you apologize to Mrs. Caldwell and agree to leave quietly, I may be able to convince the director not to terminate your contract.””

Behind him, Vanessa smiled faintly.

She had heard every word.

“That's a sensible suggestion,” she said.

“Emily, I don't particularly enjoy destroying young women's lives. But you made a terrible decision tonight.””

I looked at Richard, then at Vanessa.

“My mother needs medication,” I said.

“That doesn't mean you get to use her to make me kneel.””

Vanessa's smile vanished.

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“Emily, please don't make this worse.””

Before I could answer, Ethan appeared beside us.

“What exactly is happening here?””

Richard straightened.

“Mr. Caldwell, I'm handling an employment matter.””

“By threatening her mother's medical care?””

“Absolutely not.””

“I heard you.””

Richard swallowed.

Ethan looked at me.

“Emily, if the hotel terminates you because you protected Charlotte, contact my office. I'll make sure the circumstances are documented.””

I hesitated.

“I don't want special treatment.””

“Neither do I. I want you treated fairly.””

He turned to Richard.

“Preserve every security recording from tonight. Every camera angle. I want the footage secured before anyone has the opportunity to alter it.””

Richard nodded quickly.

“Of course, sir.””

“And nobody deletes anything.””

“Yes, sir.””

Ethan returned to Charlotte just as the security guard came back.

“Mr. Price says he's on his way,” the guard reported.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

For the first time, I saw genuine panic on her face.

Twenty minutes later, the ballroom doors opened.

Daniel Price entered wearing a charcoal suit and carrying a slim black briefcase. He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, polished shoes, and the composed expression of a man who had spent his career making difficult situations disappear.

He surveyed the room.

His gaze passed over the broken glass, the security guards, and the woman in the red coat.

Then he saw Charlotte.

His expression flickered.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Charlotte gripped my hand.

“That's him,” she whispered.

Daniel approached Ethan.

“You wanted to see me?””

Ethan held up the hospital document.

“Explain this.””

Daniel glanced at the page.

“Where did you get that?””

“Answer the question.””

The attorney adjusted his cuff.

“It appears to be a hospital administrative error.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Your name is on a discharge form. You aren't a doctor.””

“I'm aware of my profession, Ms. Ellis.””

“Then explain how you authorized a patient's discharge.””

Daniel's expression remained calm.

“I didn't. Someone must have used my name.””

Vanessa exhaled, almost imperceptibly.

Ethan noticed.

“Interesting,” he said.

“Because Charlotte remembers you visiting her room.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Charlotte was recovering from a traumatic brain injury. Her memories may not be reliable.””

Charlotte's eyes filled with anger.

“I remember your voice.””

“I'm sure you believe that.””

“You told me not to tell Ethan about the crash.””

For the first time, Daniel's composure cracked.

“That is a serious allegation.””

“You said my life would be easier if I forgot.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“This is exactly why I advised the family to limit Charlotte's exposure to stressful situations.””

Ethan took a step closer.

“You advised me to keep her away from the public. You advised me to approve a settlement with the hospital. You advised me to stop asking questions.””

“Because the accident was tragic, and reopening it would have caused further harm.””

“Whose harm?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Then Margaret opened her folder again.

“There is something else you should know.””

She removed a thin sheet of paper, yellowed at the edges.

“This was attached to Charlotte's original hospital file. It was removed from the official record six years ago.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the archive.””

Ethan took the page.

It contained a list of telephone calls made on the night of the accident.

One number appeared three times.

The first call had been placed eleven minutes before the crash.

The second had been made from the roadside.

The third had come from the hospital, less than an hour after Charlotte was admitted.

Ethan read the number aloud.

Daniel's face went white.

Vanessa grabbed the back of a chair.

“That's impossible.””

Ethan looked from the paper to his wife.

“Whose number is this?””

Neither Vanessa nor Daniel spoke.

Then Charlotte reached into the small handbag resting on her lap and pulled out an old, cracked phone.

“I kept this,” she whispered.

Ethan stared at it.

“Charlotte, where did you get that?””

“Someone gave it to me before I was discharged. They said it belonged to me.””

She pressed the power button.

The screen flickered, then lit up.

A single saved contact appeared.
