Chapter 10: The Father Who Never Came Home

“Your father survived.””

Daniel Price said the words with such certainty that even the officers stopped moving.

Ethan stared at him.

“My father died eleven years ago.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“Your father disappeared eleven years ago. Those are not the same thing.””

Ethan grabbed the edge of the table.

“Explain yourself.””

Daniel glanced toward the officers surrounding him, then toward Vanessa, who had gone strangely quiet.

“I can't explain everything here.””

“You've spent six years lying to my family. You're going to explain it now.””

Daniel's gaze shifted to Charlotte.

“Not in front of her.””

Charlotte's face hardened.

“I have spent six years being told that the truth would destroy me. I'm finished being protected from it.””

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely uncomfortable.

He turned back to Ethan.

“Your father was alive the night of the accident. He was in the back seat of the car when Vanessa lost control.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Why would my father be in a car with Charlotte and Vanessa?””

“Because he was meeting Charlotte.””

The answer struck Ethan harder than any physical blow could have.

He looked at his wife.

“Was that true?””

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

“Your father had business with Charlotte.””

“What kind of business?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel gave a short, bitter laugh.

“Still lying.””

Vanessa whipped around.

“You have no right to judge me!””

“I have every right. I spent years cleaning up the consequences of your decisions.””

The officer standing beside Daniel raised a hand.

“Let's take this one question at a time.””

Ethan barely seemed to hear him.

“My father disappeared when I was fifteen,” he said.

“My mother told me he had been killed in a private plane accident overseas. There was a memorial service. There were photographs. There was even a death certificate.””

Daniel nodded.

“The death certificate was fabricated.””

Silence swallowed the room.

Ethan's face turned ashen.

“My mother knew?””

“Yes.””

“And she let me believe he was dead?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She believed it was the only way to protect you.””

Ethan looked as though the floor had vanished beneath him.

I stood near Charlotte's wheelchair, watching the billionaire struggle with a truth more painful than anything money could solve.

All evening, people had treated Ethan as though his wealth gave him control over every situation.

Now he was discovering that the people closest to him had controlled his life through carefully constructed lies.

“What happened to my father?”” he demanded.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“After the crash, your father was taken to a private medical facility. His injuries were severe, but he survived. He couldn't remember everything immediately, and when his memory returned, he refused to contact the family.””

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of whom?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She took a step backward.

Ethan followed his gaze.

“Vanessa?””

She shook her head.

“I never threatened your father.””

Daniel spoke before she could continue.

“You threatened to expose his financial dealings.””

Ethan stared at him.

“What financial dealings?””

“Your father had been diverting money from the family trust. Charlotte discovered the transfers and planned to tell your mother. Vanessa learned about the meeting and confronted them in the car.””

Charlotte closed her eyes.

Pieces of memory seemed to be returning, each one cutting deeper than the last.

“I remember the argument,” she whispered.

“Your father said he was going to tell Evelyn everything.””

Ethan crouched beside her.

“What happened after that?””

Charlotte pressed her fingers against her temples.

“Vanessa was shouting. Your father tried to get out of the car. Then the steering wheel moved.””

She began to tremble.

“I heard the tires. I remember the impact. And then I heard someone say, ‘Leave her. We have to go.’”

Ethan's face tightened.

“Who said that?””

Charlotte looked toward Daniel.

“I don't know.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

The officer beside him stepped forward.

“Mr. Price, you said Mr. Caldwell survived. Where is he now?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I don't know his current location.””

“That's not an answer.””

“It is the truth. I haven't spoken to him in years.””

Ethan stood abruptly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No. I expect you to verify it.””

Daniel looked at the officer.

“I can provide an old address. It's the last place I knew him to be.””

The officer took out his notebook.

Daniel gave him the address of a small coastal town in South Carolina.

Then he added something that made Ethan stop breathing.

“Your father has been living under another name.””

Ethan stared at him.

“What name?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Robert Hayes.””

Charlotte suddenly gripped my hand.

“I know that name.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“Where have you heard it?”” Ethan asked.

Charlotte's eyes widened as another memory surfaced.

“A man came to see me at the rehabilitation center two years ago. He said he knew my family. He brought me a book and asked whether I remembered the lake house.””

Ethan's voice dropped.

“Did you see his face?””

Charlotte nodded slowly.

“He had gray hair. A scar above his left eyebrow. And he wore a gold watch with a black face.””

Ethan staggered backward.

His father had the same scar.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“You knew where he was.””

“I knew where he had been.””

“And you let me believe he was dead.””

“Your mother begged me not to tell you.””

Ethan's eyes burned.

“You don't get to use my mother as an excuse for every lie you've told.””

Daniel lowered his head.

The officers led him toward a quieter room for further questioning. Vanessa followed under supervision, refusing to look at Charlotte.

Before she disappeared through the doorway, she turned toward Ethan.

“You think finding your father will fix everything?””

Ethan said nothing.

Vanessa's voice broke.

“You have no idea what he did. You have no idea what your mother covered up to protect him.””

Then she was gone.

Charlotte looked up at Ethan.

“Do you think he's alive?””

Ethan swallowed.

“I don't know.””

For the first time, he sounded like an ordinary man who had lost something precious.

I touched Charlotte's shoulder.

“Whatever happens, you won't have to face it alone.””

She looked at me with exhausted gratitude.

Ethan turned toward me.

“Emily, I need to ask you something.””

I straightened.

“Of course.””

“If my father is alive, he may be the only person who can explain the entire accident. Would you stay with Charlotte while I go to South Carolina?””

I glanced at Charlotte.

She nodded before I could answer.

“Please.””

I thought about my mother waiting at home. I thought about the job that might already be gone.

Then I looked at the woman who had spent six years being punished for surviving.

“I'll stay.””

Ethan thanked me, then walked toward the officers to arrange the journey.

As the ballroom slowly emptied, Charlotte and I sat beneath the fading chandelier.

She looked at the photograph of the wrecked car one last time.

“Emily,” she whispered, “there's something I haven't told anyone.””

I leaned closer.

“What is it?””

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

“When that man visited me at the rehabilitation center, he didn't just ask about the lake house.””

She swallowed.

“He told me my father was still alive, too.””

My stomach tightened.

“Your father?””

Charlotte nodded.

Then she whispered a name.

*“And he said Vanessa Caldwell had been hiding him in a house just outside Atlanta.””*
