Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Door

The entire house went still.

Nobody breathed.

The door handle moved again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like whoever was outside knew exactly how scared we were.

My father stepped back.

“Everyone away from the door.””

I stared at him.

“You know who that is?””

He didn’t answer.

That was my answer.

Sarah grabbed Ethan from upstairs and brought him down.

His small face looked confused.

“Daddy?””

I immediately went to him.

“Stay with Mommy.””

“Who is outside?””

I forced a smile.

“Someone who shouldn’t be here.””

Ryan locked the back door.

Then the front handle stopped moving.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then a piece of paper slid underneath the door.

Nobody moved.

My father walked toward it.

“No.””

I grabbed his arm.

“I’ll do it.””

I picked up the paper.

One sentence was written on it.

*You can’t hide what belongs to us.*

My blood ran cold.

Sarah looked over my shoulder.

“What does that mean?””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

A man’s voice replied.

“You have something that was never yours.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What are you talking about?””

The man laughed.

“Ask your father why he took you away from your real family.””

My father closed his eyes.

I felt the world tilt.

“Who are you?””

The call ended.

I turned slowly.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Tell me the truth.””

He said nothing.

“Now.””

Sarah held Ethan closer.

My father sat down.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“Twenty-eight years ago, I protected you.””

“From what?””

“From them.””

“Who are they?””

My father looked at Ryan.

Ryan answered.

“The Mitchell family.””

I turned.

“What?””

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“My family has been connected to yours for decades.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

“I knew there was a history.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was trying to uncover the truth.””

I laughed.

“Everyone is trying to protect me by lying to me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father finally said:

“Your mother and I couldn’t have children.””

I froze.

“What?””

He continued.

“Then your mother became pregnant.””

I stared.

“I’m your son.””

“Yes.””

“Then what are you saying?””

He looked at Ethan.

“Your mother wasn’t supposed to survive that pregnancy.””

My face changed.

“What?””

“She was involved in something bigger than she understood.””

Sarah whispered:

“James…”

My father continued.

“Your mother discovered a secret about Michael’s family.””

“What secret?””

He looked at me.

“Their family had been trying to control a company trust for generations.””

I shook my head.

“And Ethan?””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“Ethan is connected to that trust.””

The room went silent.

A three-year-old child.

A company.

A hidden family.

It sounded impossible.

But the evidence kept appearing.

Ryan’s phone suddenly buzzed.

He checked it.

His face turned pale.

“What?””

He showed me the screen.

It was a security alert.

Someone had accessed my company’s private server.

The message was simple.

*Final transfer initiated.*

I looked at Ryan.

“What transfer?””

He swallowed.

“The ownership transfer.””

My heart dropped.

“What ownership?””

He looked at me.

“Your company.””

I grabbed the phone.

The screen showed a document.

A digital signature.

My signature.

Again.

But this time, there was something different.

A second name was attached.

Sarah saw it.

And whispered:

“No…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed at the screen.

“That’s not possible.””

“Why?””

May you like

Her voice shook.

“Because that person died before Ethan was born.””
