Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal
The room went silent.
Lena.
My assistant.
The woman who had organized my schedule.
Handled my meetings.
Known every detail about my life.
She had been part of this from the beginning.
“How long have you been involved?””
My voice was low.
Lena sighed.
“Longer than you think.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“Why?””
Lena didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Because I was trying to fix what my family broke.””
My eyes moved toward Ryan.
He looked confused.
“What family?””
Lena answered:
“The Mitchell family.””
Ryan froze.
“No.””
“Yes.””
The truth started forming.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Lena was connected to Ryan.
The hidden family.
The fake documents.
The stolen money.
Everything.
“Where are you?””
I asked.
“I’m leaving.””
“Why call me?””
“Because you deserve the truth before they find me.””
“They?””
Lena became quiet.
Then whispered:
“Your father.””
Everyone looked at my father.
He shook his head.
“No.””
Lena continued.
“He wasn’t the only one hiding things.””
My father sat down.
He looked exhausted.
“I spent years trying to undo my mistakes.””
Lena laughed sadly.
“Your mistakes created everything.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Lena, explain.””
She breathed deeply.
“My grandfather was the original person behind the trust scheme.””
“Your grandfather?””
Ryan whispered.
Lena continued.
“He believed the Carter family had too much power. He wanted control.””
“So he switched babies?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Ryan.
“And Nathan?””
“He was supposed to inherit everything.””
Nathan clenched his fists.
“But I disappeared.””
“Because your father found out.””
The room went silent.
Ryan looked sick.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
Lena’s voice cracked.
“He realized if Nathan lived, everything would collapse.””
I looked at the documents.
“And Michael?””
“Michael was only a tool.””
That shocked me.
“The man who stole my company was just a tool?””
“Yes.””
“Then who was controlling him?””
Lena didn’t answer.
The silence was terrifying.
Then she whispered:
“The person you trusted most.””
My eyes moved slowly.
Toward Sarah.
She looked confused.
“No.””
Then toward my father.
“No.””
Then toward Ryan.
He looked devastated.
“I don’t know.””
Lena said one name.
“Thomas.””
My father’s face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
I stepped back.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“James…”
“You knew.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
Sarah grabbed his arm.
“Thomas, what did you do?””
My father’s eyes filled.
“I made a deal.””
Nobody moved.
“What deal?””
He whispered:
“To keep James alive.””
My anger exploded.
“You keep saying that!””
I slammed my hand on the table.
“But every time you protected me, you destroyed something else!””
My father nodded.
“I know.””
He looked at me.
“I was wrong.””
That was the first time he admitted it.
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just regret.
My phone beeped.
A video message from Lena.
I opened it.
She was sitting in a car.
Crying.
“James, there’s one more thing.””
She held up a document.
“The final ownership transfer.””
My heart dropped.
“It was never about money.””
She looked directly at the camera.
“It was about control.””
She flipped the paper.
At the bottom was a signature.
Not mine.
Not Michael’s.
Not Sarah’s.
A name that made everyone freeze.
Because it belonged to someone who had been dead for years.
My mother.
Ryan whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Lena shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Your mother signed it before she died.””
I stared at the screen.
“Why?””
Lena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she knew someone would eventually try to take everything from you.””
The video glitched.
Then Lena said her final words:
“James, your mother didn’t help them steal your life.””
She looked terrified.
“She helped build the trap.””
The screen went black.
I looked at the document.
My mother’s signature.
A final instruction.
And one sentence underneath.
*Transfer control only when James discovers the truth.*
Nathan took a step closer.
“She planned this.””
Sarah whispered:
“Your mother knew.””
I looked at my family.
At everyone who had lied.
Everyone who had protected.
Everyone who had betrayed.
And I realized something.
The entire time, I thought I was uncovering a crime.
But my mother had been preparing me for something much bigger.
May you like
A choice.
One that would decide the future of both families.
