Chapter 2: The Name I Wasn’t Supposed to Hear

I stared at the message until the screen went dark.

My fingers felt numb.

Sarah noticed.

“Who texted you?””

I looked up.

“Who is Ryan?””

Her expression changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“James, I don’t know what you think you saw—”

“I asked you a question.””

Ethan was still standing beside the bed, holding onto his bicycle helmet.

He looked between us.

“Are you mad, Daddy?””

That question broke something inside me.

I forced myself to kneel.

“No, buddy.””

But my voice didn’t sound like mine.

“Go to the living room for a minute, okay? Daddy needs to talk to Mommy.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Don’t break my bike.””

I almost smiled.

“I won’t.””

When he left, the silence became unbearable.

Sarah crossed her arms.

“You’re seriously believing a three-year-old?””

“I’m believing what I found.””

“You found a watch.””

“A man’s watch under our bed.””

She looked away.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

“Then explain it.””

She didn’t.

Instead, she walked toward the kitchen.

“I’m tired, James. You just got home and you’re starting a fight.””

I followed.

“A fight?””

“Yes.””

“You think I’m starting a fight because I asked why another man’s watch is under our bed?””

Her jaw tightened.

“You travel constantly. You’re gone for days. You don’t know what happens here every second.””

The words hit me.

Not because they were true.

Because of the way she said them.

Like she was defending herself.

Not denying anything.

I lowered my voice.

“Are you cheating on me?””

Sarah looked at me.

For three seconds, she said nothing.

Then she laughed softly.

“You’re unbelievable.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She grabbed a towel and started cleaning the broken glass.

“Ryan is someone I know.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

“A friend.””

“What kind of friend?””

She stopped moving.

“James.””

“What kind of friend?””

Her eyes hardened.

“You’re acting crazy.””

I stepped back.

Ten years.

Ten years of marriage.

Ten years believing I knew her.

But now every memory felt like it had a question mark attached.

I went upstairs while she stayed downstairs.

I opened drawers.

Closets.

The bathroom cabinet.

I wasn’t looking for proof.

I was hoping to find something that proved Ethan was wrong.

Something that made me feel guilty for doubting her.

Instead, I found another sign.

Inside my own closet.

Behind a stack of old blankets.

A small black bag.

I had never seen it before.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a charger.

A men’s cologne bottle.

And a photograph.

I picked it up.

My stomach dropped.

It was Sarah.

Standing outside our house.

Smiling.

Next to a man I had never seen before.

Ryan.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, there was a photo attached.

My finger hovered over it.

I didn’t want to open it.

Because some part of me already knew.

But I did.

The image loaded.

It was a picture taken through a window.

My bedroom window.

Sarah and Ryan were standing inside.

And the timestamp was from the night before I came home.

I felt the room spin.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

Sarah was standing at the door.

She saw the phone in my hand.

May you like

And whispered one sentence.

“James… you don’t understand who Ryan really is.””
