Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Secret

I didn’t sleep that night.

Sarah slept on the couch.

At least, that’s what she claimed.

I stayed in our bedroom staring at the ceiling, listening to every sound in the house.

The refrigerator.

The pipes.

The small footsteps of Ethan walking around with his toy cars.

Every noise reminded me that my life had changed in a single evening.

The next morning, Ethan climbed onto the bed.

“Daddy?””

I opened my eyes.

“Hey, buddy.””

“Are you still my daddy?””

The question crushed me.

I sat up immediately.

“Of course I am.””

“Even if Mommy is mad?””

I pulled him into my arms.

“Always.””

He rested his head on my shoulder.

Then he whispered:

“Mommy told Ryan not to park in front because neighbors would see.””

My body went cold.

I looked at him.

“Ethan…”

He played with my shirt.

“I’m not supposed to tell.””

I swallowed hard.

“Why did Mommy say that?””

He shrugged.

“Because Daddy gets sad.””

A child shouldn’t know how to hide adult secrets.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Not just what Sarah did.

But that Ethan had been carrying it.

I went downstairs.

Sarah was making coffee.

She looked exhausted.

“James…”

“Where is Ryan?””

She looked down.

“I already told you.””

“No. You avoided telling me.””

She placed the coffee mug on the counter.

“You’re making this worse.””

“I’m trying to understand my own marriage.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

For a moment, I almost believed she was hurt.

Then I remembered the picture.

“Who sent me those photos?””

Her face changed.

“What photos?””

I showed her.

She stared.

Then she sat down.

“James…”

“Answer me.””

She covered her face with both hands.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

A long silence followed.

Finally, she whispered:

“Ryan was here because I needed help.””

I stared at her.

“Help?””

“Yes.””

“What kind of help requires him sleeping in our bed?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

I grabbed my keys.

“Where are you going?””

“To find the truth.””

“James, don’t.””

“Why?””

She stood.

“Because you don’t know what you’re walking into.””

I laughed bitterly.

“I think I already walked into it.””

I drove to the address connected to the message.

It led me to a small office building downtown.

I almost turned around.

Then I saw the name on the glass door.

*Ryan Mitchell — Family Legal Services.*

My stomach tightened.

A lawyer?

Why was a lawyer secretly coming into my house?

I walked inside.

A receptionist looked up.

“Can I help you?””

“I’m looking for Ryan Mitchell.””

“Do you have an appointment?””

“No.””

Before she could answer, a man stepped out of the hallway.

Tall.

Calm.

Confident.

He looked exactly like the man in the photograph.

Ryan.

His eyes locked onto mine.

And instead of looking surprised, he looked like he had been expecting me.

“James Carter.””

Hearing my name from his mouth made my skin crawl.

“You know who I am.””

Ryan slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He glanced toward the receptionist.

“Can we talk privately?””

“No.””

My voice echoed through the office.

“I want the truth here.””

Ryan sighed.

Then he reached into a folder on his desk.

He pulled out a document.

My name was written across the top.

I grabbed it.

My hands started shaking.

Because it wasn’t about Sarah.

It wasn’t about an affair.

It was about me.

Ryan looked at me seriously.

“James, before you accuse your wife of betrayal, you need to know what Sarah was actually trying to protect you from.””

I looked down at the paper.

And saw a signature.

May you like

A signature that made my entire world stop.

It was mine.
