Chapter 1: The Watch Under the Bed
The day I came home with a tiny red bicycle for my three-year-old son, I thought I was bringing back the happiest surprise of his life.
I had spent four nights away on a business trip, sleeping in unfamiliar hotel rooms and counting down the hours until I could hold Ethan again.
I imagined his little arms wrapping around my neck.
I imagined Sarah smiling as she watched us.
I never imagined walking through my own front door and discovering that my family had a secret waiting for me.
“Daddy!””
Ethan ran across the living room the second he saw me.
His small feet slid across the hardwood floor as he jumped into my arms.
I laughed and lifted him up.
“There’s my big boy.””
“You came back!””
“I told you I would.””
He squeezed me tightly.
Behind him, Sarah stood near the kitchen counter with a tired smile.
“Welcome home,” she said.
Something about her voice felt different.
But I ignored it.
I put Ethan down and walked to the garage.
“I have something for you.””
His eyes widened.
“What?””
“You’ll have to see.””
A minute later, I rolled out the small bicycle covered with a blue blanket.
Ethan gasped.
“For me?””
“For you.””
He grabbed the blanket and pulled it away.
The bright red bicycle appeared.
His face lit up.
“I love it!””
He hugged the handlebars like it was a new best friend.
“You like it, buddy?””
He nodded quickly.
“I’m gonna ride it every day!””
I smiled.
Then he looked up at me.
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“Mommy’s friend has a big car too.””
My smile disappeared.
Sarah, who had been pouring herself a glass of water, froze.
“What friend?”” I asked.
Ethan was too busy touching the bicycle pedals to notice the tension.
“The friend who sleeps here.””
The glass slipped from Sarah’s hand.
It crashed onto the kitchen floor.
The sound echoed through the house.
Water spread across the tiles.
Sarah stared down at the broken glass.
“Ethan,” she said quickly.
“Go show Daddy your bicycle.””
But I didn’t move.
I looked at her.
“Who sleeps here?””
She forced a laugh.
“James, he’s three. He says random things.””
Ethan frowned.
“No, Mommy.””
Sarah looked at him.
A warning flashed across her face.
But Ethan didn’t understand.
He pointed toward the hallway.
“He sleeps with Mommy when Daddy goes on airplane.””
My chest tightened.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Sarah went pale.
“Ethan, go play.””
“But I want to show Daddy.””
“Show me what?”” I asked.
Sarah stepped forward.
“There’s nothing to show.””
That sentence hurt more than the accusation itself.
Because it wasn’t anger.
It was fear.
I crouched beside Ethan.
“Buddy, what were you going to show me?””
He leaned closer.
His voice became a whisper.
“Mommy said I’m not supposed to tell.””
Sarah grabbed my arm.
“James, stop questioning him.””
I slowly removed her hand.
“Why would you tell him not to tell me?””
She didn’t answer.
Ethan suddenly ran down the hallway.
“Ethan!””
Sarah followed.
I followed right behind her.
He entered our bedroom and dropped to his knees beside the bed.
Then he reached underneath.
For a second, I thought he was looking for a toy.
Instead, he pulled out a black watch.
A man’s watch.
Not mine.
I picked it up.
The leather strap was still warm from being hidden under the blankets.
Sarah stopped in the doorway.
Her face changed.
“Whose is this?””
“James…”
“Whose watch is this?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then Ethan smiled innocently.
“His name is Ryan.””
Sarah’s face turned completely white.
“Ethan, stop talking.””
But my son kept going.
“Mommy said next time he can stay even when Daddy comes home.””
I looked at my wife.
For the first time in ten years of marriage, I didn’t recognize the woman standing in front of me.
And then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
May you like
One sentence.
*You finally found the watch. Now ask Sarah why Ryan left something else behind.*
