Chapter 4: The Signature That Changed Everything

I stared at the document in my hands.

My name was printed across the top.

My signature was at the bottom.

But I didn’t remember signing it.

“What is this?”” I asked.

Ryan closed the office door behind him.

“A legal authorization agreement.””

I looked up sharply.

“For what?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

“Ryan.””

He leaned against the desk.

“Six months ago, you were involved in a business accident.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“The delivery company you invested in.””

My stomach tightened.

I knew exactly what he meant.

Six months earlier, one of my company’s trucks had been involved in a serious accident. Nobody died, but the lawsuit nearly destroyed the business.

I had spent weeks dealing with insurance companies and lawyers.

“I handled that.””

Ryan nodded.

“No. You thought you handled it.””

I looked down at the paper again.

“What does this have to do with Sarah?””

Ryan walked closer.

“Everything.””

I felt anger rising.

“Are you telling me my wife was hiding legal problems from me while you were coming into my house?””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“She was hiding something from you. But not what you think.””

“Then explain.””

He opened another folder.

Inside were copies of emails, financial statements, and legal documents.

“I was hired by Sarah.””

“Why?””

“Because someone was trying to destroy you.””

I laughed.

It wasn’t because it was funny.

It was because my brain couldn’t accept another impossible thing.

“Someone?””

Ryan nodded.

“Someone close to you.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Sarah.

I ignored it.

It rang again.

Then again.

Ryan watched me.

“You should answer.””

“Why?””

“Because she deserves the chance to tell you herself.””

I picked up.

“Sarah.””

Her voice came immediately.

“James, where are you?””

“At Ryan’s office.””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“You found him.””

“Yes.””

“Please listen to me before you do anything.””

My grip tightened.

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

“You let another man into our home.””

“I know.””

“You let Ethan see things he shouldn’t have seen.””

Her voice cracked.

“I know.””

For a second, I heard the woman I married.

The woman who cried when Ethan was born.

The woman who held my hand when my father died.

But then I remembered the watch.

The photos.

The secrets.

“Why was he in our bedroom?””

Sarah went quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Because that’s where the evidence was hidden.””

I froze.

“What?””

“James, I never slept with Ryan.””

My heart stopped.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I know how it looks.””

“No. You don’t get to say that.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By lying?””

“I was scared.””

I looked at Ryan.

He slowly nodded.

Like he already knew.

Sarah continued.

“Come home. Please.””

I ended the call.

Ryan studied my face.

“You don’t trust her.””

“No.””

“Then you need to see what she found.””

He handed me another folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Sarah.

Not of Ryan.

Of my business partner, Michael.

My best friend.

The man who had worked beside me for seven years.

Under the picture was a note.

*Transfer approved. Waiting for final signature.*

My blood ran cold.

“What is this?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Someone was using your company accounts.””

I flipped through the documents.

There were transfers.

Large amounts.

Money disappearing.

And every approval had my digital signature.

But I never approved any of them.

“Who had access?””

Ryan answered quietly.

“Your assistant.””

I looked up.

“Lena?””

He nodded.

“And she wasn’t working alone.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from Sarah.

One sentence.

*James, come home now. Ethan found something else in your room.*

I looked at Ryan.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

Because his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“It’s Sarah.””

He answered.

“Sarah?””

A second later, his face turned serious.

“Where is Ethan?””

I stood up.

“What happened?””

Ryan looked at me.

“She said Ethan found a hidden phone.””

My chest tightened.

“A phone?””

May you like

Ryan grabbed his jacket.

“And the last message on it was from someone who thought you would never come home.””
